Honestly, the feeling of waiting in the classroom before the students come in is completely different from knowing there's a room full of students and still having to go in—the former feels like a reward, the latter like an adventure.
'I made a mistake. I should have arrived at the classroom earlier for the first class; that would have eased my nervousness a lot.'
William watched the students file in, smiling as he did so.
For him now, this experience is no longer of much use.
There's still a sense of tension in the classroom, but that's with the students, not him anymore.
To be precise, there are three main reasons why William was able to arrive at the classroom early to wait for the students.
First, after teaching for a while, he gradually became familiar with the way around the castle.
Second, his mutual revelations about each other aroused suspicion among other professors, and in order to avoid exposing his foolishness, he had no choice but to leave the table early.
Thirdly, and most importantly, fifth-grade students are starting to fear going to class. They, who used to arrive at the classroom early, are now using excuses they themselves don't realize to keep their distance from the classroom before class even begins.
'When the professor isn't nervous, it's the students who are nervous. Is this considered the conservation of tension?'
The thought suddenly popped into William's mind, and he quickly lowered his head, pretending to look through the papers to hide his smile.
"I need to check the homework. Please preview the textbook on your own, continuing from the last class, and preview ten pages."
As William's voice rang out in the classroom, the rustling of pages filled the room—after two weeks of test papers, the children were hardly making a sound in class.
"So-so, barely passable."
'Perfect.'
……
William scanned the densely filled exam papers with his gaze, focusing on the first and last sentences of each answer, and then made a rough evaluation of the papers based on the handwriting and writing style.
Theoretically speaking, the students here shouldn't have mastered the ultimate slacker technique of writing neatly at the beginning and end while scribbling haphazardly in the middle—but even if they had, William couldn't be bothered to care. He had a clear conscience when it came to setting exams, assigning homework, and giving lectures. If any students were to slack off, he could only say that he had done his best.
After spending some time reviewing the papers, William breathed a sigh of relief—based on a quick glance, most students who hadn't done anything carelessly could be considered passable.
Although it might seem like he's only reviewing one student's paper a month, that's all he can do. There's still another paper that needs careful correction!
"Alright, I've taken a quick look at the papers. It's alright, although not entirely satisfactory, but no students tried to slack off. Let's begin today's lesson."
"No exam paper?"
The student below asked the question instinctively, which immediately drew angry glares from the other students.
The professor finally forgot about the exam, why are you being so considerate? It's only September, not even October yet, can our thoughtful assistant take a break?
"Do you like exams that much?"
William chuckled, glancing at the boy who had inadvertently asked the question—he was certain that if he were to launch into a test, the boy would likely be ostracized for a month.
However, exam papers are not the goal; they are merely a means to encourage students to better master knowledge.
Although William is currently filling out the forms to help them pass the OWLs exams, and he feels a little guilty saying that, it doesn't stop him from slightly changing the learning content during breaks.
"Alright, there's no test today. We'll mainly be learning the fifth-grade material. But today's lesson might be a bit fast-paced, so make sure you take good notes. Also—don't forget the homework assignment."
William opened his book and, without looking up, addressed the students below him.
Then he heard a very distinct exhalation sound, as if everyone in the classroom had been holding that same breath in their chests.
'Look how scared these children are.'
He shook his head, opened the book to the page he was going to talk about, then placed the lesson plan next to him for reference before turning to the blackboard and controlling the chalk to write on it.
'I need to find some time to practice a few more teaching aids; that way, I can cover more material in each lesson—and there will be more time for review.'
-
call…
The crazed piece of chalk on the blackboard finally broke itself, fell off the blackboard, and stopped working diligently.
'Could it be that even the chalk thinks the professor's lessons are too tiring and has decided to go on strike?'
As Nancy was finishing her notes with a shorthand quill and her own copying, this thought suddenly popped into her head.
"You need to learn to be content, Nancy. At least today there weren't any of those maddening exams!"
The girl told herself not to be greedy—although classes were tiring, compared to those crazy exam papers, it was nothing.
"It's a bit of a shame that there was no exam paper, so I can't get extra points."
She closed her notebook, and the thought suddenly popped into her head. She immediately shook her head to shake it out of her mind.
Missing exam papers—what's the difference between that and Dickie, that idiot who asked the professor if there were any exam papers?
She quickly dismissed the thought, just as another piece of chalk was tirelessly burning itself on the blackboard.
Fortunately, Nancy had prepared very well, and she was still able to keep up with the pace.
However, this did not mean she was much more relaxed—during the breaks between large lectures, as the professor closed his textbook, Nancy, like many of her classmates, slumped onto the desk.
"Alright, everyone, take a break. We did talk a bit too fast. As usual, to prevent you from not understanding, here's a 2,000-word essay."
The professor's voice rang out, but many people didn't even have the energy to complain.
Is it really necessary?
Nancy now desperately wanted to cast a spell on the professor—'Why not?!'
"Well, isn't anyone curious about what to do next after we've covered the planned review material in half a class period?"
'Who knows what will happen next? Usually it's exams, but today maybe it'll be a different format—lecture first, then exam?'
A terrifying thought popped into Nancy's mind—Professor, are you the devil?
However, just as she was complaining to herself, a huge cheer suddenly came from the classroom. The students seemed to have been given some strange magic potion and immediately became full of energy.
'what happens?'
Just as she was wondering what was going on, her best friend had already left her seat and hugged her tightly—"Nancy, practical lesson, practical lesson!"
Chapter 118: The Controversial Practical Lesson
Practical lessons – Although it has only been less than a month since the start of the school year, the fifth graders feel like it was a year ago that they last heard about practical lessons.
Even after the group followed the professor into the corridor, several students still wondered if they were dreaming.
"what!"
A soft shout came from the group. The boy who made the sound swallowed the rest of his shout and then glared angrily at the person who had twisted his arm.
What are you doing?
"Does it hurt?"
His angry tone elicited concerned questions from the other party, which made the victim feel much better.
"It hurts a little—did you hurt yourself by accident? Be careful next time."
"Ouch! Thank goodness, I wasn't dreaming!"
The girl who pinched his ear made a cheerful sound, and even though she tried to suppress her voice, everyone around her could still share in her joy. Then she quickly slipped to the back of the line and joined a few other girls in biting each other's ears.
……
William was a little helpless—did the group of kids behind him think his ears were useless or that his eyes wouldn't pay attention to the line behind him?
'They're in fifth grade already, and they still have time to flirt? Is it because I don't assign enough homework?'
With these doubts in mind, William strode towards the prepared practice room—just as he said, giving these children a practical lesson was something he had planned long ago.
Even if fifth graders need cramming, they still need to maintain necessary spellcasting training. Otherwise, they will be overconfident and underperform in the exam, and their scores will naturally not be high.
'If appropriate practical lessons can stimulate learning enthusiasm, then we could consider increasing the practical time a bit. After all, their break time seems quite fulfilling; we could assign more worksheets to make up for the lack of theoretical lessons.'
After opening the classroom door, William watched the students file in while considering the upcoming class schedule.
Because William took too long to think, by the time he came to his senses, the students were already messing around with today's practice subjects on their own.
"Isn't it so cute?"
"So white, and the fur is so soft!"
"The gray one is cute too~"
The students' initial worries were completely dispelled by the creatures on the tables—the rabbits in the Forbidden Forest were semi-wild rabbits, domestic rabbits that had been thrown in at some unknown year, and Hagrid would occasionally buy some rabbits to keep the rabbit population (the leftovers from feeding them), which resulted in these rabbits being quite good-looking.
"Keep quiet!"
William frowned, strode to the podium, and unusually adopted a stern tone—if these students continue playing with the rabbits and develop feelings for them, there's no point in having class anymore.
He wasn't one of those medical school professors who told students to build a good relationship with rabbits and then teach them how to dissect them in the next class—it was absurd. Rabbits, mice, and monkeys, as the three main types of experimental animals, were already good enough to offer their bodies; making them perform for money was just too much.
"Don't block the cages of teaching aids. Those of you who are using them, put the teaching aids back in the cages. Everyone, gather at the front. We're going to talk about a short bit of theory first."
William's accumulated authority ensured that his orders were quickly carried out.
"In this lesson, we will briefly learn about common spell damage and emergency treatment for other common injuries. The theory class will last for fifteen minutes, and the remaining time will be used for hands-on practice. If you have no questions, each of you can take a handout from the lectern."
William pointed to the thick stack that had been placed there long ago—the rabbits were so eye-catching that they had been overlooked.
-
"Okay, that's all. Have you memorized the key points?"
"I remembered the professor's instructions—treatment for burns, emergency evacuation during fires, and how to avoid being swept into a crowd during chaos."
Although much of what was in the lecture was not magical, none of the students present had any questions; they even ignored the thick stack of notes at the back.
"It's just a test paper, so what? Just do it."
Although the professor's authority kept them focused during lectures, now that the course was over, they couldn't wait to move on to the practical lessons.
"Very good, just remember that. Two students per group, each group will take a rabbit, inflict wounds with magic, and then treat them."
"Caused trauma?"
The students were stunned for a moment, then immediately realized what was going on.
Those students who had already grabbed the rabbit with their quick hands were stunned; they even doubted their own hearing.
“That’s right, causing trauma—two people per group, one casting the spell and the other healing. I promise that every rabbit that has been experimented on will be released back into the wild, but the course must continue.”
William addressed everyone.
