Wen Shu raised her camera and looked through the viewfinder. The image was framed and cropped in a small square, forming a completely new composition.
She pressed the shutter.
"Click".
The sound was crisper than that of the old point-and-shoot camera, and it put people in a good mood.
She looked down at the screen: an apple, a ceramic pot, and a gradient gray backdrop. The image was clear and the colors were vibrant, completely different from the photos she had taken with her phone.
"Try manual focus again."
Ding Heng turned the focus ring on the lens and continued to instruct: "Look, the image will change."
Wen Shu stared intently at the screen, her finger gently rotating the focus ring. The apple went from blurry to clear, and then back to blurry.
"That's it, twist it to the point you want."
After a few tries, Wen Shu gradually got the hang of it.
"Try adjusting this again."
Ding Heng reached over her shoulder again and tapped the dial on the camera body: "This is the exposure compensation. If the light is too bright, adjust it back down; if it's too dark, adjust it up."
Wen Shu turned her head and realized that Ding Heng's face was very close to hers.
For a moment, her heart inexplicably raced. She quickly looked away, adjusted the parameters as instructed by Ding Heng, and took another picture.
"much better."
Ding Heng stepped back: "You have good comprehension."
"Thanks to my brother-in-law for teaching me so well."
Stop flattering me.
"hey-hey……"
Wen Shu chuckled twice and continued fiddling with the camera.
The salesperson brought over several entry-level cameras from different brands, including Canon, Sony, and Leica. Wen Shu tried them out one by one, gradually discerning the differences in feel.
Ding Heng suddenly asked, "Is there one you like?"
Wen Shu hesitated for two seconds: "The Fuji model."
"why?"
"nice."
Ding Heng couldn't help but laugh out loud; it was indeed a woman's answer.
He turned back to the sales clerk: "That one, with the kit lens, and..."
"Okay, sir, please wait a moment."
The shop assistant went to the warehouse to retrieve the goods, and Wen Shu put the camera back on the table, hesitating to speak.
"Speak your mind."
"Brother-in-law..."
Wen Shu asked in confusion, "Why did you suddenly buy me a camera?"
Ding Heng replied, "I guess it's to cultivate some interests and hobbies for you. You're in college now, so don't be too restrictive. Have fun and study. Four years of college isn't just about attending classes, taking exams, and getting credits."
Wen Shu was stunned.
Hobbies and interests.
She had never really thought about what her hobbies were from childhood to adulthood.
When she was little, her family was not well-off, and there wasn't much money to cultivate any special skills in her.
Later, living a wealthy life in Xingcheng, she was busy pursuing her grades and had no time to think about these things.
I was just flipping through Ding Wenjie's photo album, and she was indeed moved and fantasized about trying to create similar works herself.
But she clearly didn't say it, yet Ding Heng could tell?
"Thank you, brother-in-law."
"Don't mention it."
Ding Heng took the shopping bag from the shop assistant and put his camera bag and receipt inside: "You can practice first, so when we go on a trip later, I won't have to carry the camera and take pictures for them all by myself."
Wen Shu responded cheerfully, "Okay, I'll take care of relieving my brother-in-law's pressure then."
As the two walked out of the store, Wen Shu took the shopping bag from Ding Heng's hand. It wasn't heavy, but it felt quite substantial.
Since Wen Shu went to school in Xingcheng, Ding Heng has bought her many things, but they were ultimately for Wen Jing's "younger sister".
This time, however, it was a gift for Wen Shu herself.
At least Wen Shu believes that...
"Let's go back first."
Ding Heng took out his phone and called a car: "Your sister Hua Qing should be finished with rehearsal. I need to hurry over there."
The two went to the roadside to wait for a car.
Wen Shu turned her head to look at Ding Heng, who was looking down at his phone.
"Brother-in-law."
"Ok?"
Will my sister know that you bought me a camera?
"They probably don't know."
Ding Heng looked up: "Why don't you just not tell her?"
"This……"
Wen Shu joked, "It feels like we're doing something naughty right now."
"What's wrong with buying you a camera?"
"Buying a gift for your sister-in-law behind your sister's back, isn't that a bad thing?"
Ding Heng was momentarily speechless, then laughed.
"Okay, if you think it's a bad thing, then give me back the camera."
"I won't pay it back."
Wen Shu hugged the shopping bag to her chest: "There's no reason to take back something you've given away."
Two ride-hailing cars arrived at the same time, and the two people got into each car.
By the time I got back to school, it was already dark.
Wen Shu swiped her card to enter the building, went up to the fourth floor, and pushed open the door to her dormitory.
Jiang Nian was the only one in the room, sitting cross-legged on the bed looking at her phone.
"Xiao Shu is back?"
"Um...where's my sister, Baima?"
"I'm accompanying them shopping."
"Oh……"
Wen Shu plugged her phone in to charge, then casually placed the shopping bag at the bottom of the wardrobe and covered it with clothes.
Just as I was about to close the cabinet door, the others returned one after another.
Baima plopped down on Wenshu's bed first: "Wenshu, where did you go this afternoon? You even made me sign in for you?"
Wen Shu gave a perfunctory reply: "I already said, I'm meeting a friend."
"What friend?"
Baima noticed Wen Shu's unusual behavior, leaned closer and squinted her eyes: "Xiao Shu, are you hiding something from me?"
"What could I possibly be hiding from you?"
"What was in that bag you were carrying when you came back?"
Wen Shu was taken aback. Bai Ma had already noticed a shopping bag at the very bottom of her wardrobe.
"Nothing much, just bought two pieces of clothing."
"clothing?"
Bai Ma was skeptical and about to ask again when her phone rang.
She glanced down at the screen and answered, "Brother?"
After hearing something said on the other end of the phone, Baima's eyes widened.
"What? You've come to the capital? Great! I'll be right there!"
She hung up the phone, grabbed her bag and ran outside, but turned back at the door and shouted to Wen Shu.
"Brother has arrived in the capital, I'll be going now, I'll come find you again tomorrow!"
The sound of footsteps faded into the distance.
The door closed.
The dormitory fell silent.
Wen Shu sat on the edge of the bed, letting out a sigh of relief as she began to think again.
Since Ding Heng came to the capital, why didn't he tell Baima beforehand?
Was it forgotten? Or was it intentional?
What would Baima think if she knew that Ding Heng was with her that afternoon?
Wen Shu shook her head, composed herself, and picked up another coat to put back in the closet.
He casually pushed the camera further inside...
