With a helpless sigh, Rahar pushed up his glasses again. "The council did make some discoveries back then. I can tell you, but please don't spread them around."

Upon hearing that it was a big scoop, everyone present nodded in agreement.

Seeing this, Lahar didn't mince words and went straight to the point: "The council's investigation at the time revealed that there was no life energy in the Witcher organization's territory—neither in the plants, the soil, nor the air—as if something had killed all life in that area..."

"And in the records of previous councils, there is one person whose strength perfectly matches this situation."

"He is the embodiment of death. Whenever he appears, he brings countless deaths. You must have heard of him—Dark Mage Zeref."

Upon hearing this, Makarov frowned deeply. "You mean, more than eighty years ago, the Black Mage personally destroyed the 'Witcher' organization, which was established to target demons?!"

Lahar nodded solemnly. "We don't have direct evidence, but in recorded history, only a black mage has been able to create a death ground where all life is taken away."

It's no wonder Makarov was shocked, because the Dark Mage Zeref lived more than 400 years ago.

But ironically, this claim does have some credibility.

As we all know, the demons that people know now are also called "Demons of the Book of Zeref," and it is not impossible that Zeref would kill the Witchers for the sake of his subordinates.

But would a dark mage be a person with feelings?

Makarov shook his head and stopped thinking about it. After all, 87 years ago, he was just a little kid who was about a year old.

Lahar's recounting of the lost secrets of the demon-slaying technique ended there. Just then, Lalabai's seal was broken, and the enormous withered tree demon returned to its wooden flute form once more.

Looking at the demon-slaying tools that the sealing class had put away, Hope couldn't help but sigh. With such a wealth of resources, it's no wonder that the Magic Council is the order and judge of the magical world.

"By the way, Mr. Hope, as someone who was directly involved in this incident, please make a record with Dolanbart so that we can understand the whole story."

Seeing how polite Rahal was, Hope couldn't refuse.

Follow the buzz-cut man, Dolan Bart, to a lounge in the venue.

Just as Hope was about to finish recounting the whole story, he saw Dolanbars striking the classic pose of Commander Yodo from the anime "EVA," propping his head up on the table and staring at him with a gloomy expression.

"Uh... Sir? Why are you looking at me like that?"

"I have no interest in men."

Hope's words nearly strained Dolanbart's back and shattered the oppressive aura he had painstakingly created.

Doranbart snorted, "Hope, I sent you to infiltrate 'Phantom Lords,' so you'd better explain to me why you've become a member of Fairy Tail again."

Dolanbart's words caused Hope's mind to go blank on the spot.

He was constantly worried about his unknown undercover identity, fearing that the forces behind the original owner would come knocking on his door, and sure enough, they did.

Hope now finally knows that the original owner of this body was an undercover agent sent by the council to another magic guild, "The Phantom Lords".

But why was Fairy Tail added now?

He couldn't keep using the excuse of "amnesia." The council members certainly wouldn't believe him like Makarov did. And if Doranbalt had magic or items that could read memories, he'd be finished.

With a slight sheen of sweat on his forehead, Hope could only bite the bullet and make up an excuse:

"That officer... actually I..."

"I've been sent by Phantom Lord to infiltrate Fairy Tail as an undercover agent again."

Chapter 20 Mission Impossible?

"They sent you to infiltrate Fairy Tail again?"

Upon hearing Hope's explanation, Doranbart's previously furrowed brows instantly relaxed. "That's right. The Phantom Lords have always been at odds with Fairy Tail. Sending someone to infiltrate Fairy Tail is definitely something they're capable of doing."

Hope was surprised that his hastily made-up reason had unexpectedly worked. While pleasantly surprised, he couldn't help but probe, "Sir, what kind of grudge do these two guilds have that they even think it's reasonable for them to send instigators?"

Dolanbart glanced at Hope. "As an intelligence officer for the council, your preparations were terrible. Our intelligence center had already gathered all this information long ago."

"Fine, I'll say it again, but this is the last time."

According to Doran Balt, the feud between Fairy Tail and Phantom Lord dates back 100 years.

The predecessor of the "Spectre Dominator" was a dark guild called "Blue Skull," which had been entrenched in Magnolia for many years, causing havoc and leaving the residents with no choice but to remain silent.

Until one day, four young mages joined forces to destroy the "Blue Skull".

To prevent the return of evil and to protect the peace of the region, four young mages chose to establish their own guild in Magnolia.

So, in April of X686, which is 98 years ago...

The orthodox mage guild "Fairy Tail" was officially established.

In the same year, the guild master of "Blue Skull," who had narrowly escaped, knew he didn't have the power to take revenge on Fairy Tail, so he simply went straight and created the legitimate guild "Phantom Lords."

From then on, Phantom Lord kept making things difficult for Fairy Tail.

It wasn't until Precito Gelberg, the second guild master of Fairy Tail, could no longer tolerate it and launched a powerful attack on Phantom Lord, killing the then-guild master of Phantom Lord.

Everyone knows that Precito did it, but there is absolutely no evidence pointing to him or Fairy Tail.

Having witnessed Precito's power and ruthlessness, not only did the Phantom Lord finally become obedient, but even the Magic Council had to treat Fairy Tail with utmost respect.

Later, Precht grew old and in X736, he entrusted Fairy Tail to his carefully trained student.

The third president, Makarov, then took office.

Just when everyone thought they'd finally made it, the Phantom Lord was stirring again.

However, although Makarov lacked his teacher's wisdom, his immense strength was enough to overwhelm the Phantom Lord, and he had friends all over the magical world.

So the newly emerged Spectre Masters quieted down once again.

It wasn't until 20 years ago, when the genius mage "Josepole" emerged and became the fourth guild master of Phantom Lord, that they finally had the confidence to challenge Fairy Tail.

Joseph is now one of the "Ten Wizard Saints," on par with Makarov.

However, Joseph was only 40 years old and at the peak of his life.

In contrast, the 88-year-old Makarov, though still powerful, is no longer the same as he once was, sweeping through the dark guilds and suppressing all the dark forces.

“In recent years, the Phantom Lords have expanded wildly and established a large number of branches. Given Joseph’s arrogant personality, I think he might take action against Fairy Tail, which is why I sent you to infiltrate and gather intelligence.”

At this point, Doranbart sighed, "Who knew they'd send you to Fairy Tail as a spy again?"

Hope hadn't expected the two guilds to have such a past, but what he was most concerned about now was how Doranbart would deal with him, the undercover agent.

Is he being transferred back to the council?

Or should we let him find an excuse to go back to the Spectre Lord?

Seeing Hope's hesitant expression, Doranbart realized, "Since things are like this, Hope, why don't you just continue your undercover work in Fairy Tail? I also want to investigate Makarov."

Hope's heart skipped a beat, but he maintained his composure and asked, "Sir, does the council intend to deal with Fairy Tail?"

"It's not a council meeting, I just want to investigate."

Dolanbart pondered for a moment, then said, "I won't hide it from you, but recently Makarov has been trying to find out information from me, both openly and secretly. You know, this is clearly overstepping his bounds."

“Originally, I planned to infiltrate the area myself, but your situation is special. You can help me find out what Fairy Tail and Makarov are up to.”

Hope's expression froze.

Good grief, I've gotten myself into a "Mission: Impossible" game...

Fortunately, Doranbalt was a decent boss who allowed him to reveal his true identity to Fairy Tail in a life-threatening situation in order to seek help, thus preventing him from becoming a "double agent" that neither humans nor demons could do.

With the undercover investigation concluded and Dolanbart about to finish taking statements regarding the "Lalabai" incident, Hope suddenly said, "Sir, may I request something from the council?"

Doranbalt, who was finishing up the record, looked up and asked, "You're a mage now too. Do you want to apply for magical items to increase your combat power?"

Hope shook her head and took out a small crystal from her pocket. "Can I apply for a magic crystal?"

"That's it?"

Dolanbart looked disgusted. "Is 200 enough for you?"

Upon hearing this number, Hope's eyes nearly popped out of their sockets.

He was still struggling to figure out how to get a large number of magic crystals to speed up the breaking of magic, when his boss asked for 200 crystals.

Doranbart, who was still writing and drawing on the record, did not hear Hope's lack of response and thought he had given too few. He then said, "300 crystals. This is the maximum number of magic crystals I can access."

"If you think that's not enough, I'll take you to Lahar later. He has higher authority, but he doesn't know you're one of us yet."

"No need to trouble Captain Lahar, 300 magic crystals are enough."

Hope waved his hand quickly. Although Rahal seemed like a good person and a good boss, he didn't want his identity to be known by more people for the time being.

After all, one should always be wary of others.

However, Hope had another question: "Sir, aren't magic crystals subject to purchase limits? How can the council use so many at will?"

Doranbart rolled his eyes at Hope. "You haven't been assimilated by those idiots from Fairy Tail, have you? You think the council members are the same as everyone else?"

"Just the internal magical research and maintenance of the magical equipment alone consume hundreds of kilograms of magic crystals every month. The few hundred crystals approved for you are not even enough to fill a gap between your teeth."

Hope gave a dry laugh.

Ordinary people buy things by the piece, while councils use them by the pound.

As expected, the party that sets the rules is different.

Chapter 21 From Pretense to Reality

After the council members finished handling everything, it was already close to dusk.

The last magical train back to Magnolia had already departed.

Having missed the appointed time, Makarov had planned to spend the night in Clover City with his juniors, but a spaceship that descended from the sky and Chairman Bob's invitation changed his mind.

......

As night fell, a flying warship traversed the night sky.

This magical explosive airship, named "Christina," is a personal vehicle that "Azure Pegasus" has spent a great deal of time and money to build.

The ship is sturdy and durable, and equipped with powerful magical cannons. The mages of the "Azure Pegasus" often travel on the Christina to conduct magical research in some remote areas.

Ah~ the night breeze feels so nice~

Lucy, who was riding in an airship for the first time in her life, leaned on the railing of the deck, enjoying the evening breeze with a contented expression.

Natsu was also leaning on the railing, but his expression was the complete opposite of Lucy's; he looked half-dead from motion sickness.
