MC's career as foreign lord
Chapter 2 Money Witness
“Da… … Master!” As Zhou Ren turned his head with some doubts, he saw Henry tremblingly pointing at the huge canopy above his head, “This… … This tree is about to fall, run!”
“Oh? Are you talking about this?” Zhou Ren said with a smile. He was a little disappointed that he didn't have a one-key tree chopping function, but in his eyes, there was nothing wrong with this canopy suspended in mid-air!
As he raised his hand again, there was another burst of intensive knocking, knocking down another piece of wood from above his head.
This one didn't seem to land very well, and it fell directly on Henry's head. He screamed, clutching his head, "Master, save me!"
Zhou Ren waved his hand with a smile, and in his terrified gaze, he reached out and caught the huge piece of wood that fell down. This huge wooden block, one meter square, shrank in an instant. When it reappeared in Henry's eyes, it had become a small piece of wood no bigger than a palm, and then with a flip of his hand, it disappeared.
“Huff, huff!” Henry gasped for breath. What had just happened was too exciting, and he hadn't fully reacted. Only then did he tremble and leave this place.
He had such good luck just now, but he might not have it at other times. Self-preservation was the best choice.
Zhou Ren continued to knock on the trees in place until only a canopy remained. He looked at the six pieces of wood in his hand and nodded with satisfaction.
Zhou Shuren once said: "To get rich, first chop trees!" Now that Zhou Ren had wood in his hand, he had the foundation for everything, and his originally empty heart suddenly had something to rely on.
He walked towards the place where Henry was hiding, which was a shady spot, "Let's go, let's go back to town!"
Before he could finish speaking, he heard a loud "Rumble!" The two of them turned their heads to look, only to see that the canopy had already fallen in the roar, smashing into a pile of debris!
Henry was dumbfounded, but Zhou Ren looked thoughtful, "So, the power in my body is more like a field? Only things that I have touched will have the characteristics of MC, and will disappear after leaving?"
He played with the wooden block that had just been dismantled in his hand, with a playful expression on his face. The two of them slowly left this wasteland.
He felt that his emotions were a little off, as if they were too indifferent. The emotions that originally came from his own body were being stripped away little by little, leaving only absolute rationality.
This feeling was very bad, but the emotions had not completely disappeared, but were completely suppressed by the blocky body. He felt that this seemed to be a side effect of the golden finger.
Shaking his head, after discovering that he did not feel any other threats, his mind returned to this place.
Zhou Ren casually asked: "Is there a place in town that sells things? Take me to have a look?"
He had a gentle smile on his face, and he didn't look embarrassed at all, as if he wouldn't feel worried about his lack of money.
“Yes, there is no shortage of various shops, but what does Master want to sell?” Henry asked, “If it’s ordinary things, you can sell them directly at the market, but if… … ”
“If it’s something special, is there a special shop here?” Zhou Ren asked.
“Yes, there is a special shop opened by a professional Master in the town. If you want to go, I will lead you there immediately!” Henry said.
Zhou Ren nodded, "Lead the way!"
The two of them returned to the street. Now there seemed to be fewer people here. Only the church and the market were still very lively. Zhou Ren looked around, but the eyes hidden in the cloak seemed deep and dark, and no one dared to look him in the eye.
“It seems like I should change my clothes!” Zhou Ren muttered to himself. It wasn't a very good thing to wear this outfit when talking to people.
Soon, they passed through the bustling and noisy market and came to a gloomy and dark alley. Henry looked at Zhou Ren with a troubled expression.
“Master, we commoners are not allowed to enter here. Next, you can only rely on yourself!” Henry said with a bow, “I will wait for you at the exit.”
“Okay!” Zhou Ren nodded and strode into it.
This was not difficult to predict. From Henry's attire, it could be seen that there was a clear class division in this world. He didn't know what the identity of the professional he mentioned was, but it seemed very noble.
He stepped into this somewhat quiet alley. Here, he seemed much more normal. Apart from the black robe on his body that still looked noble and elegant, there was not much difference.
Most of the people here were veiled, but some people were covered in armor, while others were shrouded in cloaks, just like Zhou Ren, adding more mystery and weirdness to this alley.
The place that Henry told Zhou Ren about was at the deepest part of the alley, a shop called [Old Ford]. In front of the shop, a crooked wooden stick was hung, with a small silver dragon perched on it. In Zhou Ren's eyes, this wooden stick seemed to fit his popular impression of a magic wand.
The door was not open, but ajar. He stepped forward and knocked on the door. The crisp sound seemed to echo throughout the alley, but the pedestrians at that time did not have any intention of looking back.
“Creak!” The somewhat old wooden door was pushed open, hitting the wooden stick at the door, making a somewhat muffled sound. A human attendant walked out, glanced at Zhou Ren, and said.
“Master, welcome to Old Ford. Are you selling or buying?”
Zhou Ren looked at him. This didn't seem to be a purebred human. His ears were pointed, with green eyes and fair skin. His identity was immediately revealed.
Zhou Ren had also heard Henry mention those gnolls before. It seemed that this was not a pure human world, but more like a fantasy world from Western mythology. The attendant in front of him seemed to be a half-elf.
He nodded, "I'm here to sell something!"
“Selling something? Please follow me!” His accent was a bit strange, and it didn't seem to be a local pronunciation.
Zhou Ren was stunned, as if he was curious as to why he would suddenly have this kind of analysis, as if he was really a local. The attendant also pushed open the door and walked into the store.
Zhou Ren stepped into the store and discovered that the originally narrow store was incredibly wide inside. The pine counters were inlaid with glass, allowing people to better see the goods inside. However, most of the goods were stored in the dense cabinets behind the counter, without a trace.
Most of the things on the counter were basic materials, from wood, knives, bones, and some unclear gems.
“What do you want to sell?” The half-elf attendant stood behind the counter and asked.
Zhou Ren thought for a while and took out a plastic lighter from his pocket.
Although he actually had quite a few other things on him, items like the windproof lighter or his phone weren't easy to sell. Only this useless plastic lighter could be exchanged for some money.
Seeing Zhou Ren take out a delicate, finger-sized trinket, the waiter was a little stunned. Compared to the rough tools in the shop, this small lighter was indeed exquisite and ingenious.
"What is the use of this tool?" the half-elf asked, his voice a bit more cautious.
"Click!" Zhou Ren pressed the lighter, and a faint flame suddenly appeared, along with a wisp of electricity.
"Alchemy tool!" the half-elf exclaimed, a hint of eagerness appearing on his face. "Sir, are you looking to pawn it or sell it outright?"
Just then, a middle-aged man came down from the staircase behind the counter. The moment he saw the item in Zhou Ren's hand, his pupils contracted sharply.
"Ika, step back. I'll handle this customer!"
So, the half-elf waiter was called Ika, Zhou Ren thought, looking up at the newcomer.
This was a middle-aged man wearing archaic clothing, with intricate, mesmerizing patterns carved into it, making people unable to help but get lost in them.
Fortunately, Zhou Ren only felt dazed for a moment before snapping back to his senses. With a flip of his hand, the lighter was already stored in his inventory, causing the middle-aged man to pause slightly.
"To think that a small place like Pine Leaf Town would actually produce someone like you?" He seemed to recognize Zhou Ren's identity. "May I ask, what is it that the mage wishes to exchange for?"
He certainly didn't think Zhou Ren was here for money. After all, someone with spatial equipment who could sell precious alchemy tools couldn't possibly be short on funds, right?
Mage? Zhou Ren was taken aback. That was quite a magical title! The owner of this shop seemed to have mistaken him for a mage? That didn't seem like a bad thing, Zhou Ren thought, quickly accepting the idea.
Except for certain Dark Age times, being a mage has a lot of advantages in terms of personal status and acceptance into this world.
Zhou Ren flipped his hand again, placing the lighter back on the counter. "No need. Just take a look at this and tell me how much it's worth! Give me a price, and if it's right, I'll sell it!"
The middle-aged man looked up, a bit surprised. "You... want to sell it for gold coins?"
Zhou Ren nodded. "If you have a higher-level currency, I wouldn't mind either!"
"Heh heh!" the man chuckled softly, revealing his appearance from under his cloak. "Of course not. I only have Pine Needles from the Tree Kingdom here, but I doubt you'd be interested."
He was a rather refined-looking man with light golden hair plastered to his ears, revealing a pair of pointed ears. His eyes weren't green but the same light gold as his hair, making him look very handsome. He was also a half-elf.
However, Zhou Ren didn't see the elegance and ease of an elf in his demeanor. Instead, he saw the greed and worldliness of a human merchant. But for a merchant, perhaps this was a valuable quality?
"Truly an extraordinary alchemical creation!" the middle-aged man exclaimed. As a half-elf, he wasn't young, but he could still be considered very handsome. He looked at the lighter, carefully flicking it to ignite it.
"Click!" A pale yellow flame emerged from the iron shell, and a flash of faint blue electricity made the middle-aged half-elf suddenly look up. "To think I would encounter a mage of both the Evocation and Transmutation schools!"
Zhou Ren remained noncommittal. "It's just a business transaction, mutually willing. There's no need to know too much."
The implication was that he was asking too many questions and Zhou Ren was displeased.
The middle-aged half-elf reluctantly withdrew his hand. "Indeed, it's just a transaction!"
He took the lighter in his hand and looked it over and over again before nodding slightly. "Sir, for such an exquisite alchemical item, do you want to temporarily pawn it or permanently sell it?"
"Like a short-term or long-term pawn?" Zhou Ren thought, tapping the counter unobtrusively. "Permanent sale! Pay me as soon as possible!"
"Of course! As you wish!" The middle-aged half-elf took out a parchment scroll from under the counter. "In the name of Waukeen, the goddess of wealth, this trade will be free of any deceit or coercion!"
As he spoke, he gently pressed his palm onto the scroll. Details of the transaction and his palm print appeared on it.
Zhou Ren was stunned. Was it that advanced? Using a god as a transaction medium? Who exactly was this Waukeen?
Although he thought this, his actions were swift. He imitated the man's actions, placing his palm on the scroll. A strange stream of light flashed, and his palm print was imprinted as well.
"The Lady of Wealth is watching us, the transaction is complete!" the middle-aged half-elf said. Both of them could see a gold coin engraved with the face of a beautiful woman floating over their heads before falling onto the scroll.
The half-elf immediately opened a chest that was half a person tall. When he opened it, the golden light made Zhou Ren feel dazed.
"According to the judgment of the Goddess of Wealth, your alchemical tool is worth one thousand one hundred gold coins!" He said, taking out one thousand and ninety gold coins, ninety silver coins, and one hundred copper coins.
Zhou Ren saw clearly that there were mostly copper and silver coins inside, with not many gold coins.
These coins seemed to have a very slight magical power. When they collided, they could make a slight sound.
But so much money was actually a bit heavy. Zhou Ren picked up the linen bag containing a thousand gold coins, seeming to feel the weight of the coins.
With a flip of his hand, the gold coins disappeared. Then came the silver and copper coins. Even with so much money, he only frowned slightly, not looking like he couldn't lift it.
This performance made the middle-aged half-elf's pupils shrink even further. Even a grown knight would probably have difficulty doing that!
Zhou Ren turned and left, leaving the two half-elves pondering the lighter. They didn't close the door until Zhou Ren's figure disappeared into the alley.
Henry was indeed waiting at the alley entrance. Zhou Ren had already exchanged the money and casually tossed out a bag of copper coins. "This is your reward!"
He hadn't expected that a small lighter could sell for such a high price. It seemed that the status of mages and alchemy in this time was probably higher than he had imagined!
Henry had already seen the number of copper coins in the linen bag and was immediately terrified. "M...master, it was just guiding the way, it doesn't need this much!"
Zhou Ren waved his hand. "It's just five silver coins. Take it. There will be times when I need you in the future!"
