Chapter 123: Underdark
"It really is an obsidian cave!" Zhou Ren recognized it at a glance. What else could that square opening be but obsidian?
According to Mosa, these obsidian deposits don't exist in isolation but extend vertically, connecting the entire cave from top to bottom.
As one of the few underground passages connecting to the Underdark, this place doesn't seem particularly conspicuous. It appears merely as a route to some underground river, as one can even hear the gurgling of flowing water.
"My friends seem unwilling to leave the Underdark, so they want us to fetch them, Master!" Mosa said before jumping directly into the opening.
Zhou Ren followed suit, leaping down. He passed through the underground river formed by the gurgling water, traversed the winding underground passage, and, guided by the cave markings from Mosa's initial arrival, reached a dark and deep area.
"I can sense that we've left my territory!" Zhou Ren said. It was indeed as he had predicted, approximately 5,000 meters away, the connection to the surface would end underground.
It was incredibly dim here, but after crossing a cave, numerous fluorescent mosses and fluorite illuminated the ground and the walls on both sides, brightening the somewhat dark area.
Overhead were glowing plants resembling a starry sky. It wasn't as he had imagined, with everyone groping in the dark.
"Didn't the books say that the Underdark is full of terrifying creatures?" Zhou Ren asked, realizing that the books describing the continent's characteristics weren't always accurate.
Mosa chuckled and said, "Some book authors just make things up. You'll understand if you see it with me!"
"Then I need to ask even more questions!" Zhou Ren said, "Since there's still some time before we reach our destination, tell me about the Underdark!"
"The Underdark is divided into upper, middle, and lower layers. The uppermost layer is inhabited by creatures that migrated from the surface, such as the Drow elves!"
"The middle layer is inhabited by ancient, primordial races, terrifying creatures from ancient times. This is a group that disregards even the gods. They occupy the middle and lower layers of the Underdark, such as the Mind Flayers and Aboleths!"
"These are the two psionic species you mentioned, right?" Zhou Ren asked.
"Yes, they are the creators of the two great psionic empires of ancient times, and also the most dangerous and cruel creatures in the entire Underdark!" Mosa nodded. "We're almost there. This is the upper layer of the Underdark!"
Zhou Ren realized that his previous impression was indeed mistaken. The geographical features here are mostly deep darkness. Eternal darkness and silence permeate the area, making everyone feel uneasy.
Perhaps only undead creatures with natural darkvision could live here in peace. Ordinary people would likely experience a stress response when faced with such darkness.
Only a very few places have glowstone, luminescent crystals, or glowing moss, lichen, and some seemingly tall mushrooms.
These fungal mushrooms are quite interesting. They grow very tall, and their glowing exterior illuminates everything around them.
The two continued onward, and Zhou Ren signaled for Mosa to continue explaining.
"And at the bottom of these two layers, it borders the lower Underdark, which is filled with all kinds of terrifying monsters and a small number of creatures, such as the most ancient Aboleths and the ancient Mind Flayers. Like the demons that crawled up from the Abyss, they control that brutal and terrifying wreck."
His words seemed to be filled with fear towards that area, indicating that he must have suffered losses there. This was a legendary-level lich, not some small fry.
"That area is connected to certain layers of the Abyss. Some demons and even devils will come to the Feywild Continent through that natural space portal, but they will get lost in the dark region and will not continue forward!"
"I'm curious, what exactly are those rustling creatures we've been encountering along the way?" Zhou Ren asked, sensing some strange little creatures staring at him with their crazed eyes.
However, they didn't dare to approach, only observing. These little monsters were muttering bizarre languages, their eyes filled with undisguised malice.
"It could be anyone, but you don't need to worry. They won't dare attack us!" Mosa glanced at them and then paid them no further attention.
After arriving in the Underdark, the aura of death surrounding him had been constantly active. All underground creatures feared this aura and dared not approach.
The aura signified his glorious history of living underground, as well as his bloody killing intent. He was no pushover; a mage who had participated in the Blood War could not possibly be a gentle soul.
"What kind of beings could possibly remain lawful good in this area?" Zhou Ren asked, unsure why anyone would maintain such an alignment in such a dark, desolate, and mysterious place.
Wasn't that courting death? It was like holding a lantern in a latrine—utterly doomed!
"These lawful good races generally have few needs, don't require a lot of resources, and are very good at sticking together, ensuring their own integrity and uniqueness!" Mosa said, "It's also possible that they're very poor and don't need resources to sustain their lives, so no one robs them!"
"Is this the legendary case of 'as long as I'm poor enough, you won't be able to steal anything from me'?" Zhou Ren retorted. In that case, undead creatures really did perfectly fit that description!
They continued onward, passing several dim caves and even hearing the dripping of water, until they finally reached their destination.
It was the ruins of a city, with some huge stones lying horizontally. Besides the stones, there were some seemingly exquisite stone carvings and various metal creations.
Perhaps a long, long time ago, this was a great kingdom, inhabited by some bizarre creatures who crafted all kinds of metal objects and tangible goods, and ruled over a section of the upper Underdark.
This was also knowledge that Zhou Ren had seen in books. He knew that in the underground world, water was the most precious resource. A water source often meant terrifying wars and slaughter, but it also meant the rise of a city and a settlement.
The two continued onward, and as they entered the city, the terrifying whispers behind them gradually disappeared. It seemed that there were certain defensive measures here that prevented some of the little creatures living underground from approaching.
"Kuo-toa!" Mosa said, his eyes seeming relaxed as he looked at the somewhat damp traces on the ground.
Zhou Ren was puzzled, "Didn't the 'Continental Compendium of Races' say that these fish-men only survived in the ancient deep sea? Do they also have a subterranean race?"
“Ancient races always have branches underground. Aren't the deep-sea devil fish also alien creatures?” Mosa said, “They are among the weakest creatures in the entire underground world, probably only equivalent to deep gnomes.”
“Now that those little things are gone, what is this?” Zhou Ren asked. The ruins of this city were filled with some unknown floating objects. A large number of luminous bodies were piled up in the city, making it as bright as day.
“This is a relic, a kind city, the kind creatures from underground seem to have built it very well!” Mosa said, “It's a pity that this place is about to collapse. I heard that a Drow elf tribe not far from here is about to move over!”
“Drow elves?” Zhou Ren was taken aback. He had naturally seen this kind of creature in the elven race's library. In the elven race's narrative, this was a dark and terrifying creature, full of enslavement and chaos.
They are natural enemies of the elves. Their gods and Corellon are mortal enemies. All ordinary elves who see dark elves should take up arms and send them to hell.
“Exactly that race that is the mortal enemy of the elves!” Mosa said, without much special meaning in his words about this matter. “They are the losers of the Crown Wars, along with their defeated gods, they came to the Underdark!”
“Lolth, the Spider Queen!” Zhou Ren said. Almost all documents have detailed introductions to this former wife of the elven chief god. This brutal and unbenevolent, but powerful goddess, seems to represent some kind of special power.
“Lolth doesn't dare to come out. She is being closely watched by the Triune Goddess!” Mosa said. It seems that there is also a very exciting drama between these two goddesses, a bit like a war between the ex and the current?
After gossiping, they were greeted by dwarves wielding huge weapons. These dwarves held weapons that were even taller than their bodies. Many shields stood at the city gate like this, watching Zhou Ren warily.
Then they saw the lich, with some doubt on their faces. That staff retained a familiar aura, but it was not particularly obvious.
“Don't you even recognize me?” Mosa opened his mouth, and then he saw a look of surprise on the faces of the dwarves in front of him, “It's Lord Mosa!”
“Lord Mosa has not forgotten his friends in the underground world!”
“Lord Mosa has repaired his body and will rule the Underdark with us!”

“Go and tell the elders!”
One of the dwarves seemed to run very fast, and had already left in a few flashes.
Behind them, little fairies flashing special lights also poked their heads out, staring at the two strangers with their eyes.
“Oh?” Mosa said in surprise, “You have already found so many Ardlings?”
Zhou Ren looked at him, “What is this?”
He realized that reading so many books seemed to be useless. This dark area was full of special knowledge that he completely didn't understand and had no way to master. Those strange creatures and special words were not something he could obtain by reading books.
“Just treat them as the same kind as that bear, Master!” Mosa said, “This is a lawful good fey creature from the underground, born lucky!”
Everyone stared at them curiously. This was a group of small humans with silver-like skin and two pairs of gray wings on their backs. Even silver light would fall between their flights, making them look particularly cute and unique.
The little things seemed to feel that they had no malice. Three small Ardlings with fluorescent lights flew over little by little, and then circled around the two of them.
Zhou Ren was overjoyed, took out a fruit, and distributed it to the three little Ardlings. The rich magical aura that just appeared made the three little guys overjoyed, and they suddenly hugged it and ran to the side to gnaw on it.
“It really is an unfailing method!” Mosa said, “Master, come in with me!”
Zhou Ren nodded. Several dwarves in front led the way, and then slowly followed them into the city ruins.
It wasn't until they walked into the city that they realized what the little light spots flying in the air were. They were mushroom spores. There were huge mushrooms like forests in the city, as if they were in a fairy tale world.
Some creatures with mushroom heads also walked out of the darkness curiously. They leaned on their houses, probing their mushroom heads, watching the two strangers come in.
“Your city seems to have grown a lot now!” Mosa said, his words full of emotion.
“Lord Mosa, after you left, the elders found some tribes who were willing to live with us. Relying on that well, we have developed smoothly to the present!” The dwarf said.
Compared to the dwarves on the surface, his body was darker and more profound, and he also looked stronger, but he seemed to be a little taller.
Unlike the dwarves, they have brown or black hair, and they also put some mineral-made ornaments on their heads.
Zhou Ren discovered the identity of the dwarves. On their personal bags, he saw some shield emblems. This is the symbol of the Shield Dwarves.
Do these mysterious dwarves also exist underground?
He couldn't help but think of some introductions about the dwarves. Shield Dwarves are a different kind of race from ordinary dwarves. They live in mountains and caves for a long time. Their bodies are stronger, but their personalities are more introverted. They can discover more mineral deposits and make better things.
They have preserved the dwarves' warm and kind nature, but they retain their hatred for the Drow elves. It is this somewhat contradictory personality that makes their lives in the underground world not so pleasant.
“The races living in this city are all those who don't live well in other regions. Their lawful good character often suffers a lot!” Mosa explained to Zhou Ren.
This also makes sense, after all, in this underground world that advocates malice, kind people mean being deceitful and pitiful.
“So are we going to take them all away?” Zhou Ren asked. The characteristic of this underground society is that most of the warriors are professionals, because races that are not professionals simply do not have the ability to survive.
“That depends on what you think, Master!” Mosa said. Of course, he wanted to take these races away, but he was not the owner of the territory.
