Chapter 17: The Camera
"Comrade Fang, is that a Shanghai Model 58 camera you're holding?"
Deputy Director Jin noticed the camera in Fang Ya's hand.
"That's right, the academy purchased them a few days ago for teaching purposes."
The Shanghai Model 58 camera is my country's first domestically mass-produced 135 rangefinder camera. Its core design is based on the German Leica IIIf rangefinder camera, with simplified adjustments made to suit domestic manufacturing processes and user needs.
The all-metal body is drop-resistant and impact-resistant, and most importantly, it does not require an external power supply, making it particularly suitable for the complex environment of criminal investigation scene investigation.
Deputy Director Jin exclaimed, "Your People's Public Security Academy is really something! Our branch's investigation department applied several times, and all the higher-ups gave us was a camera ticket, which we used to buy a foreign one. The subordinates have made a fuss about the right to use that camera several times already."
He asked Fang Ya, "I've only heard about this camera; I've never actually seen it before. How are the photos?"
Fang Ya raised the camera and said, "This camera has few buttons, making it simple and easy to operate. The photo quality... the photos are quite clear. Even at night or in low-light conditions, as long as there's a flashlight, the photos will still be clear."
Deputy Director Jin said with some envy, "Our branch only has one old one, which is made abroad. It has some problems, and it's especially difficult to replace the parts. I wonder when we'll be able to use cameras made in our own country."
Fang Ya said softly, "Deputy Director Jin, I heard that the Municipal Bureau is placing an order to equip its branches and key departments. You can try applying for it."
Deputy Director Jin's eyes suddenly lit up: "Really?"
"I overheard our vice dean saying it over and over."
"Okay, I'll go back and draft the application report."
At this moment, Director Qiao leaned closer and said, "Deputy Director Jin, do you think we should apply for one for us too? It would be more convenient for us to secure evidence when we're on missions, wouldn't it?"
Deputy Director Jin glanced at him and lightly tapped the air a few times with his hand: "You, go back and write an application report with Director Yu, and I'll take it to the higher-ups. As for whether it will be approved, that depends on the higher-ups."
Director Yu and his colleague immediately expressed their gratitude, saying they would submit a report upon their return.
Jiang Zhenghua glanced at Fang Ya and noticed that she was very good at gathering on-site information, with many details being very accurate. He thought to himself, "As expected of a teacher from a centrally affiliated college, her on-site investigation and systematic summary are almost as good as hers."
He recalled seeing detailed information about the Central People's Public Security Academy online in his previous life.
The school's predecessor was the North China Security Cadre Training Class, established in July 1948 by the Social Department of the North China Bureau in Xiye Village and Dongye Village, Pingshan County, Hebei Province. Its purpose was to train cadres for the takeover and establishment of public security organs in large and medium-sized cities in North China after liberation. In October of the same year, it moved to Weizhou Town, Jingxing County, Hebei Province.
In January 1949, with the approval of the North China Bureau, it was rebuilt into the North China Public Security Cadre School, and began formalized cadre training.
In January 1950, with the approval of the State Council of the People's Government, it was renamed the Central Public Security Cadre School, with then Minister Luo, the Minister of Public Security, serving as its principal. Its main task was to train public security cadres nationwide.
In October 1952, the school moved to its new location in Muxidi, Jiucheng, laying the foundation for its future development.
In January 1953, Minister Luo reported to the State Council that he proposed to transform the Central Public Security Cadre School into a regular public security school. At that time, Mr. Luo approved the proposal and named it the Central People's Public Security Academy, which became the first regular public security higher education institution in my country.
Fang Ya noticed Jiang Zhenghua staring at her: "Deputy Director Jiang, is there anything I need to fix?"
Jiang Zhenghua immediately snapped out of his reverie and waved his hand, saying, "Comrade Fang did a perfect job. I also benefited greatly from it. He truly deserves to be a teacher at the academy."
Deputy Director Jin smiled and said, "Deputy Director Jiang is right about that. Usually, our investigation team members are a bit lost when they see the scene. We investigate wherever we see it, without any plan, and often we miss some details. If you have time, Professor Fang, you should teach our colleagues how to handle the collection of evidence at the scene."
"If I have the chance, I'm willing to speak."
Soon, Fang Ya finished taking the photos, took a pair of white cotton gloves from her assistant, and began to examine the body.
Upon seeing this, Jiang Zhenghua immediately stepped forward.
Fang Ya's assistant took a pair of gloves out of the box and handed them over: "Deputy Director Jiang, here you go."
Jiang Zhenghua took it, said thank you, and then squatted down to examine it carefully.
Fang Ya grabbed the deceased's hand and examined it carefully: "Based on what we've seen so far, the fatal wound was in the abdomen, caused by multiple stab wounds from a dagger-like weapon. It's likely that the death was due to excessive blood loss. This suggests that it wasn't done by a professional."
Jiang Zhenghua shook his head and pointed to the deceased's cheek, saying, "I don't think so. Look here, there are clearly several finger marks, probably left when the deceased covered their mouth to prevent them from screaming. It would be difficult for an ordinary person to remain silent, nor would they have that kind of awareness."
Fang Ya observed carefully for a moment: "You mean the murderer did it on purpose, just to interfere with us?"
"This possibility cannot be ruled out."
As he spoke, Jiang Zhenghua began to caress the deceased's body with both hands, searching the entire body but finding nothing.
He shook his head and sighed, "Without any items, we can't quickly confirm their identities."
Fang Ya said softly, "Judging from the fact that the deceased's clothes had no patches, the family was quite well-off, and the pants looked like work clothes from a factory, so the person shouldn't be unemployed."
Jiang Zhenghua grabbed the victim's left hand to examine it: "This is it. Usually, robbers wouldn't take the work ID or go to the trouble of disposing of the body."
Fang Ya was taken aback, then nodded in agreement: "I believe you now. The murderer is deliberately creating a smokescreen to intentionally delay the time."
She glanced at Jiang Zhenghua: "Which police academy did Deputy Director Jiang graduate from?"
Jiang Zhenghua shook his head: "I transferred from the military, and today is my first day at work."
Fang Ya's eyes widened: "Really? How do you know all this?"
Jiang Zhenghua was about to blurt out, "Even TV dramas don't portray things like that," when he immediately realized that television sets were now a rarity, something you couldn't see unless you were in a certain social class.
He immediately changed his story, saying, "I served in the Public Security Army before. One of my comrades' grandfathers was in this line of work, and I borrowed a copy of 'The Washing Away of Wrongs' from him. Later, in my spare time, I found some related books and read them myself."
Fang Ya exclaimed, "You really are a genius, better than most students who graduate from the police academy."
Fang Ya's assistant, a young man in his twenties, also exclaimed in admiration, "Indeed, some of the students I know are not as good at making predictions as Deputy Director Jiang."
Jiang Zhenghua changed the subject, saying to Fang Ya, "Can we take off his shirt now?"
"Yes, it's best to do it on a stretcher."
Upon hearing this, the assistant immediately jogged over to fetch a stretcher.
The three of them worked together to lift the deceased upstairs.
