America: Starting with the Last Liberty
Chapter 5 A Deadly Question
Rosen smiled, picked up his suitcase, and walked up the narrow stairs to help "Alexandra Daddario" to her feet.
"Madam, what's your name?"
"Blake Gaines".
(Alexandra Daddario as Black Gaines)
"Gaines? Could Mrs. Gaines in the apartment be...?"
"That's my mother! Do you know her?"
What a coincidence!
The Mrs. Gaines that Rosen was talking about was the middle-aged woman who had recently moved into the apartment across from his; she was still attractive and had a refined air.
The key point is that Mrs. Gaines didn't have any bad habits and didn't make any noise, so the two had a fairly good relationship with their neighbors.
The apartment where Lawson rents has all sorts of tenants: drug addicts, drug dealers, skilled women, out-of-towners with dreams of stardom, avant-garde artists...
These people are disgusting when they start causing trouble, and the soundproofing in this shabby apartment is terrible.
In short, having a peaceful neighbor is incredibly precious; Rosen can't even remember how many times he's argued with his neighbor.
Rosen had no choice; this apartment didn't require a driver's license or a rental agreement, so given his previous circumstances, this was the only place he could rent.
Rosen had originally planned to move out immediately after obtaining his legal status, but now...
"Yes! Mrs. Gaines lives across the street. When she first moved in, she brought me some homemade pizzas."
In America, there's a custom where when someone moves into a new neighborhood, the neighbors prepare some food to give to the new neighbor as a housewarming gift.
Of course, newly moved-in residents can also bring their homemade food to visit their neighbors, which is one way to integrate into the new community.
Rosen lived right across from Mrs. Gaines, so he got a free pizza, which was quite good, better than many other pizza places.
"What a coincidence! Oh my!"
"What's wrong?"
"I think I twisted my ankle."
Seeing Blake's grimacing face, Rosen knew that her injury was probably quite serious and she probably wouldn't be able to walk on her own.
However, the stairwell in this apartment building was so narrow that it could only accommodate two thin people walking side by side.
If Rosen had to support Blake and carry the suitcase, it would be a bit difficult for him to go upstairs.
So Rosen simply squatted down in front of Blake.
"Come on, let me carry you up!"
Blake was somewhat surprised.
"Will you carry me up?"
"Otherwise, how are you going to get up? This stairwell is just too narrow."
Blake surveyed the stairwell and realized that it would indeed be difficult for Rosen to help her up.
After hesitating for a moment, Blake decided to climb onto Rosen's back and let him carry her upstairs.
At this moment, Rosen truly understood what it felt like to carry two mountains on his back; it was truly...exciting!
With such a heavy burden, Blake was no light man.
Fortunately, after Rosen transmigrated to this world, he had been training his body. Although he was rather thin, he was not a weakling.
"Um, am I a little heavy?"
Hearing Rosen's heavy breathing, Blake was clearly embarrassed.
Rosen knew he couldn't agree with the other person at this moment, or he would lose their favor.
"No! I had some drinks at the bar tonight, it has nothing to do with your weight."
Blake could indeed smell alcohol on Rosen, along with a faint, pleasant odor. It was completely different from the strong body odor of other white people his age.
With some effort, Rosen finally managed to carry Blake to the third floor, which was the entrance to Mrs. Gaines' apartment.
"Blake, you can knock now."
Rosen's hands were supporting Blake's legs, and he couldn't free them, so Blake had to knock on the door himself.
Boom boom boom!
"Who is it? Who's knocking?"
Mrs. Gaines' voice soon came from inside the room; she sounded somewhat frightened.
Being knocked on the door of an apartment in this kind of community in the middle of the night is indeed quite terrifying. If it were Lawson in this situation, he might have to pull out his gun.
"Mom, it's me!"
"Blake?"
Mrs. Gaines recognized her daughter's voice and immediately opened the door, where she saw Rosen carrying Blake on his back.
"Blake, Rosen, you guys..."
Seeing the suspicious look in his mother's eyes, Blake immediately realized that she had misunderstood.
"Mom, I twisted my ankle going upstairs, but thankfully Lawson carried me up!"
Mrs. Gaines looked at her daughter with a hint of helplessness.
"Then why don't you come down?"
Blake then realized that she could have gotten off Rosen's back much earlier, and quickly jumped down, blushing.
Rosen quickly reminded Blake.
"Be careful!"
"hiss!"
Seeing Blake's face contorted in pain, Mrs. Gaines knew he was badly injured!
"How could you be so careless? Rosen, could you help me get Blake inside?"
"Yes, Mrs. Gaines!"
Rosen helped Blake into the house and helped him sit on the sofa.
Mrs. Gaines went to the bathroom to get a first-aid kit and sprayed pain relief spray on Blake's sprained ankle.
"Seriously! Blake, why aren't you staying at Caltech? Why did you come here?"
"Mom! You suddenly ran away from home, and Dad and I were so worried about you! Oh dear!"
Mrs. Gaines, with a stern face, grasped Blake's foot and began to rub it vigorously. She seemed to have medical experience, and her technique was very skilled.
"Don't move! So that's the guy who called you and told you I ran away from home? And he even gave you my current address?"
Hmm, there seems to be some interesting little story in here?
Rosen stood silently to the side, pretending he didn't exist.
"Uh, Dad did give me Mom's address..."
Blake was clearly too inexperienced; Mrs. Gaines managed to extract information from him in just a few words.
"So what? Why didn't that guy come over himself? Why did you have to come find me in the middle of the night?"
This is practically a death sentence; even Rosen would find it extremely difficult to answer, let alone an innocent college student like Blake.
Helpless, Blake could only blink his beautiful, deep blue eyes and start to whine.
"Mom, don't you welcome me?"
Mrs. Gaines's expression immediately melted at her daughter's sweet talk.
"You shouldn't come running over without saying a word next time!"
The mother and daughter hugged each other, making Rosen feel that he was not appropriate to be in this scene, so he quickly coughed twice and prepared to leave.
"Ahem! Mrs. Gaines, now that Blake is alright, I'll head back."
Mrs. Gaines then remembered that Rosen was still in the room and quickly thanked him.
"Rosen, thank you so much this time! Blake's always been a bit absent-minded, and if it weren't for you..."
"Mom! What's wrong with me?"
"Aren't you confused? You can twist your ankle just walking up the stairs!"
"Isn't it because the stairwell is too dark?"
"So you never carry a flashlight when you go out?"
