America: Starting with the Last Liberty
Chapter 13 Once you're on the bus, there's no getting off.
Rupert Lawrence did not go home after get off work; feeling agitated, he desperately needed to find his confidante to confide in.
Well, "confidante" is the term used at the University of Tokyo; in America, they are usually called mistresses.
As the security chief of Pacific Standard Bank, Rupert Lawrence's salary, even though he was the security chief of a branch, was not low; it was higher than that of many working-class Americans.
But the real reason Rupert Lawrence was able to keep a mistress was because he had other businesses.
"Honey, you haven't visited for several days!"
Rupert Lawrence walked into an apartment, where a hot Mexican woman immediately came to greet him.
Many Mexicans who illegally immigrate to America choose to exchange their bodies for the means to survive, regardless of the method used.
Normally, a mistress's passion and physical intimacy would bring Rupert solace, but today his troubles were not eased in the slightest.
Seemingly sensing Rupert's agitation, the mistress's attitude also changed.
If you want to stay in this industry long-term, it's not enough to just be good-looking and have a good figure; you also need to provide sufficient emotional value.
Rupert sat on the sofa, covering his face, looking extremely dejected. His mistress quickly stood behind him and massaged his body and mind.
"Honey, is something bothering you?"
"Phew, I'm about to go bankrupt!"
Rupert had clearly been keeping something to himself for too long and needed someone to confide in, and now he finally couldn't hold back and said it.
It turns out that Rupert had been secretly collaborating with certain gang members to hide contraband in the bank where he worked, in order to earn extra money.
This is the real reason why Rupert was able to afford to support his mistress.
However, the money came too quickly and too easily, which led Rupert to develop some bad habits, namely gambling.
Gambling can easily destroy a person's values.
Rupert incurred a large debt due to gambling, and in order to repay it, he secretly sold contraband.
However, a new problem arose: those contraband items had owners, and if Rupert were to discover that they had been stolen, his life would be over.
Local community members don't know how to be polite to Rupert.
The mistress was terrified after hearing Rupert's words.
Although the mistress hadn't done anything like that, Mexico also has gangs, and those gangs are far more brazen than America's current ones.
This could very well lead to trouble for her, her mistress.
"Honey, what should we do?"
"The only way now is to get some money and then reimburse them for their goods!"
Rupert pursed his lips, his mind blank.
Where can America get such a sum of money?
That's the biggest problem.
In the end, Rupert couldn't come up with a solution at his mistress's house. In this state, he had no interest in exercising, so he left his mistress's house and wandered aimlessly through the streets.
Before he knew it, Rupert had walked into a small alley and was stopped by two men.
One of the men had a big beard, and the other was a bald man covered in tattoos. They didn't look like good people at all, which immediately aroused Rupert's suspicion.
Since Rupert was able to become the security chief, he must have some skills. He carefully retreated and prepared for a fight.
Who are you?
"Rupert Lawrence?"
When the other person called out his name, Rupert immediately thought he had been caught, so he turned around and tried to run away.
As soon as I turned around, I saw an Asian man wearing a suit and sunglasses at night.
"Who exactly are you?"
With both the front and back roads blocked, Rupert became even more nervous. He tried to put his hand in his pocket to pretend he was carrying a gun.
Unfortunately, Rupert's outwardly strong but inwardly weak appearance was easily seen through by the Asian man.
"Don't be nervous, Mr. Lawrence. We're not here to cause you trouble; we're here to give you money!"
"Back off! Don't come any closer!"
As a native American, Rupert couldn't believe such a good thing existed in the world.
"Mr. Lawrence, do you urgently need some money? We happen to be able to help you!"
Rupert was stunned by the Asian man's words. He had only mentioned his lack of money to his mistress and had not told anyone else.
"How...how did you know?"
"Of course we have our own channels. If you want to make a quick buck, come with us."
After saying that, the Asian man walked past Rupert and left with the other two white men. He did not threaten Rupert or forcibly take him away.
But the Asian man's words seemed to have a magical power, making Rupert, who was very confused and didn't know how to get out of his predicament, unable to help but believe him.
With a determined effort, Rupert finally decided to follow.
"Rosen, is that guy really going to follow us?"
That's right, these three people are Rosen, Phil, and Dennis.
The reason Donnie wasn't there was because when Rosen went to find Phil and Dennis, they had just gone out.
Rosen knew perfectly well that Donnie was an undercover agent, and it was good that he wasn't there.
So Rosen convinced Phil and Dennis to work together to deal with Rupert Lawrence.
Just kidding. The job isn't Rosen's responsibility alone. How could we let Rosen do all the work and then let the other three reap the benefits?
Moreover, Lawson has already spent $25000; surely Lawson shouldn't bear that cost alone?
There has to be someone else doing the work, otherwise Rosen will feel like he's losing out.
Once in Phil and Dennis's car, Rupert quickly got in as well, and Dennis began driving around downtown Los Angeles.
Rupert, unable to contain his curiosity, spoke first.
"Who are you? Why do you know my name? And what's this 'Quick Money' thing you're talking about?"
Rosen, sitting in the back, took out 15 cigarettes, handed one to Rupert, and patted him on the shoulder in a friendly manner.
"Mr. Lawrence, this has something to do with where you work."
Rupert wasn't stupid; he immediately realized what was going on.
"You mean...?"
"Shh! Don't say it! Mr. Lawrence, now that you're on the bus, there's no getting off. You understand what I mean, right?"
Rupert swallowed hard; he understood Rosen's threat perfectly.
"On the bright side, with this money you can pay off your debts, maintain your dignity for the rest of your life, avoid divorce, and not lose custody of your two daughters. Also, here's a real statistic: in America, the average middle-aged homeless person who goes bankrupt only lives 3 to 5 years."
