Chapter 468 The Disobedient Patient
Chapter 468 The Disobedient Patient
The scene shifts to the afternoon of the following day.
The camera is positioned at the entrance of the intensive care unit, where the patient's family members are waiting for the patient to be brought out.
After a brief exchange between the ICU doctor and the family, a bed was wheeled out. The patient on the bed had a disposable sterile dressing on his neck and looked very energetic and full of vitality, a far cry from the near-death state he had been in the emergency room yesterday.
He saw his family members and felt embarrassed, turning his body slightly to the side, trying to avoid their piercing gazes.
*Smack!*
A slap landed hard on the patient's face, knocking his mouth crooked, and you could see the saliva spraying out.
This startled the doctors in the intensive care unit and the trauma department.
Some viewers in front of the screen were confused, while others smiled knowingly.
"Drink, drink, drink your mother's... " A string of vulgarities rained down on the patient, thoroughly cursing him.
But the patient didn't talk back; instead, he covered his face and gave a fawning smile.
He pressed his hand against the dressing on his neck and made a strange sound, "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to."
The sound was slightly strange, but the doctors watching the screen knew it was the sound of air leaking out after a tracheotomy to block the airflow.
The family members launched into another tirade of abuse, but the doctor pulled them away when they reached out to hit him.
The camera followed the patient back to the trauma department, but did not go straight in; it paused briefly.
In the comments section.
The bald host smiled and asked, "Professor Shen, how are things handled when someone leaves the hospital without permission during their stay and gets into trouble?"
Professor Shen said helplessly, "There's nothing we can do. We have all sorts of treatments available. It mainly depends on whether the patient's family can accept them."
"It's hard to assign responsibility for this," the bald host asked.
Professor Shen paused for a moment, composed himself, and then explained in detail, "As long as hospitalized patients are not in critical condition and are able to take walks, they have the possibility of going out. Doctors and nurses can't control it much. For example, being confined to the ward only happened during the years of the pandemic."
"Back then, we could explain it to the patients and their families, and everyone cooperated. Now, with everyone out enjoying themselves, we can't talk to the patients. If nothing goes wrong, it's fine, but if something does happen, there's no way to explain it."
On a minor scale, this is a breach of hospital rules; on a major scale, forcing patients to remain in the ward constitutes illegal detention.
The bald host laughed, "It can't be that bad, can it?"
"There are only so many doctors and nurses; no one has the energy to take good care of every patient. We can't just install microchips to track patients' locations upon admission, can we?"
"Are patients really that disobedient? They all come here for treatment..." a guest asked.
Mao Mao gave a strange smile and continued, "When I was an intern, I encountered a patient who had a heart attack, a very severe one. He could only stay in bed, and even the slightest movement would cause ischemic pain in his precordial region. After three days of medication, he was slightly better, but suddenly the monitor at the nurses' station alarm went off."
"Should we call the police at the nurses' station?" one of the guests asked, somewhat bewildered.
Mao Mao briefly explained that the patient's electrocardiogram monitor was displayed at the nurses' station, and then said, "We rushed to check on the situation. The doctor was so anxious that he didn't even put on his shoes and ran over barefoot. And then..."
"What was the result? The patient's condition worsened, and you had to perform emergency resuscitation?"
"Did the patient get out of bed without permission?"
"Did the patient have an argument with someone?"
The other guests asked questions one after another, but Mao Mao just smiled and remained silent.
Professor Shen smiled slightly, vaguely guessing what had happened based on Mao Mao's expression.
"The patient was doing *that* to himself... making a mess all over the bed. The police were called because he was too excited, which caused a heart attack." Mao Mao omitted the sensitive words, but everyone knew what he meant.
"That works too!"
"Does he have any regard for his life?!"
"Is everything alright in the end?"
"Professor Shen probably encounters similar situations many times. I haven't had much clinical work experience, and I've only encountered this once," Mao Mao said with a smile, adjusting his glasses. "However, as far as I know, there are probably quite a few patients who go out drinking in the middle of the night."
"Hmm." Professor Shen nodded. "I encountered a patient with cirrhosis and massive ascites; his navel was even protruding from his body due to abdominal pressure."
"Every night after the lights are turned off, the patient secretly drinks about half a kilogram of baijiu (Chinese liquor), and no amount of persuasion can dissuade him."
The guests didn't know much about clinical medicine, but they were very interested in all sorts of gossip, especially the two examples mentioned by Professor Shen and Mao Mao.
Their lively conversation diluted the bloody intensity of Ji Xiang's mosaic hand earlier.
Director Fan clearly left enough time for the guests to gossip and talk about interesting topics to dilute the bloodshed that had just occurred.
More than ten minutes later, the scene shifted, and the camera entered the ward.
The patient sat on the edge of the bed, leaning against the bed frame, with an expression that showed he wanted to laugh but was trying hard to suppress it.
Director Fan's assistant took the microphone and walked over. He was a little timid, after all, he had witnessed the patient vomit violently and then start spraying pink foamy liquid from his mouth and nose, and now the patient was sitting properly in front of him.
The contrast left Director Fan's assistant somewhat at a loss.
"Are you physically fit for the interview?" Director Fan's assistant asked.
The patient raised his hand and used his good hand to cover the dressing, saying, "No problem, I'm perfectly healthy."
As he spoke, he released his grip and pounded his chest with one hand to show that he was healthy.
The thumping sound indicated that the patient appeared to be perfectly healthy, without any problems whatsoever.
When Director Fan's assistant saw that he was alright, saying that he could probably escape from the hospital and drink another half a jin of liquor, he felt relieved and started the interview.
The patient was a little embarrassed, but he was a talkative person, and he became more and more fluent and excited as he spoke.
"I didn't expect to encounter something like this. My hand was injured, and it was really uncomfortable to stay in the hospital, so I sneaked away to have a few drinks."
"I felt nauseous and started vomiting very quickly after drinking. At that time, I thought it must be because of the anesthesia during the surgery, because I used to have a much lower alcohol tolerance."
"But as I was vomiting, I realized something was wrong. I felt weak all over and it was difficult to even stand up. I wanted to call 120 for emergency help, but I was too scared. I thought I could get back to the hospital after I finished vomiting and then see a doctor."
"At that moment, I suddenly blacked out. You know, just like that!"
The patient made an exaggerated gesture.
"One second my stomach was churning, the next second it felt like someone was choking me, and in the blink of an eye I lost consciousness."
"When I woke up, I found myself in the hospital. I was terrified that my family would find out and I would be scolded to death."
As the patient vividly recounted his illness, Director Fan's assistant vaguely realized that if he hadn't been following him closely, who would have guessed that this guy had already stepped into the gates of hell last night?
