Great Power Long Sky

Chapter 32 A Powerful Heart

The crosswinds were stronger than any Li Lu had ever encountered on his previous flights, and he even began to suspect that there was a problem with the airport's location.

The left wing suddenly flipped upwards, while the right wing sank downwards. Li Lu reacted quickly, pressing the rudder against the control surface instead of blindly maneuvering the stick. At this altitude and speed, excessive stick movements could easily cause a stall.

Since the crosswind is strong, we can't force it; we have to follow the pattern of the crosswind and slowly adjust the aircraft's attitude little by little.

This one maneuver made the workers on the ground jump out of their throats. From their angle, it looked like the plane was about to flip over.

Li Lu showed no signs of nervousness; his heart rate was normal, and his movements were meticulous.

Even if the current flight altitude is only fifty meters!

The track is right in front of us, and its length is estimated to be no more than 500 meters.

For an aircraft that needs to taxi for seven or eight hundred meters to come to a complete stop, the length of the runway is obviously far from enough.

What Li Lu needs to do is make full use of every inch of the track.

Ideally, the landing gear should touch down as close to the end of the runway as possible.

Even in good weather, it's not easy to achieve this, let alone under the current conditions of strong crosswinds and visibility being affected by rain.

Without ground guidance, Li Lu had to rely entirely on his own eyesight to judge the distance between the plane and the runway. Under the current circumstances, he could not rely entirely on the altimeter; if there was even a one-second delay, the plane would crash onto the runway.

The pitot tube on the nose of the aircraft slammed into the runway. Li Lu completed eleven maneuvers in just three seconds, and the aircraft's altitude dropped to ten meters from the runway in one go.

Just as the workers were holding their breath waiting for the plane to land, Li Lu stabilized the flight attitude and stopped descending. Instead, he slightly pulled the stick to lift the nose of the plane and flew forward level.

A whooshing sound swept over, and the workers' eyes widened in surprise.

Once the plane's landing gear made full contact with the runway, Li Lu knew it was going to overrun; the remaining runway was simply not enough to stop a plane traveling at that speed.

He kept the two poles and two rudders steady, leaving the rest of the work to the friction between the tires and the track.

J-6 modified No. 101 overran the runway, its landing gear tires crushing into the unfinished section, where the bottom layer of soil had just been compacted and there was a height difference of several tens of centimeters between it and the completed runway.

When the plane crashed in, the landing gear was pushed to its limit, and the vibration spread throughout the fuselage, startling Li Lu.

Fortunately, the plane did not veer off course.

After taxiing for more than 100 meters on the unfinished runway, J-6 Modified No. 101 finally came to a stop, albeit wobbly.

The workers were stunned for a moment, then someone shouted, "Quick, save people!" and everyone ran towards the plane.

Li Lu, holding onto the radio transmitter, called out to Commander Dong, "Reporting, I have successfully made an emergency landing. Repeat, I have successfully made an emergency landing."

The entire East Command breathed a huge sigh of relief.

Li Lu strictly followed the procedure to shut down all equipment and cut off the power before finally pushing open the cockpit canopy and standing up. Just then, a worker rushed over carrying a bamboo ladder and placed it against the side of the cockpit.

"Comrades, stay away from the plane!"

"Notify the armed police at your construction site to come and protect the aircraft!"

Li Lu called out twice before stepping off the plane onto the bamboo ladder, not forgetting to close the cockpit canopy.

Hudong Airport is a major project. During the construction of such projects, armed police are deployed for security and patrols. The number of officers ranges from a squad to a company, providing 24-hour protection.

Li Lu was very clear about these common sense facts. In fact, some air force aviation units were even tasked with patrolling the airspace where key areas and important targets were located.

The squad leader immediately went to report, and soon after, a captain led a squad of soldiers running over, carrying guns and ammunition.

"Comrade pilot, Xiong Guangming, company commander of the 3rd Company, 277th Regiment, 93rd Infantry Division, reporting for duty!" The captain stood at attention and saluted.

Li Lu then realized that the troops stationed there were army units, not armed police units, which showed that Hudong Airport received more attention from higher authorities than other key projects.

Li Lu returned the salute and said loudly, "Hello, Company Commander. I am Li Lu, a pilot from the 7th Squadron of the 7th Air Regiment. Please send troops to protect the aircraft and prevent anyone from getting close."

"Yes, sir! Please rest assured, pilot!" The army captain answered without hesitation and immediately arranged for his squad to surround the plane and set up a cordon.

Looking at the soldiers standing like javelins in the pouring rain, Li Lu shouted, "Thank you, comrades!"

After doing all this, he withdrew to the engineering command post under the leadership of an army captain.

Aircraft are important assets of the military, and the army captain attached great importance to them. He arranged for guards to be on board and sent someone to report to the battalion headquarters.

Li Lu walked into the project command center with the camera that had taken dozens of precious photos tucked into his arms.

The leaders here were already waiting. They quickly arranged for someone to bring ginger soup to Li Lu to ward off the cold, and immediately reported the situation to the troops.

Li Lu pulled out a crumpled pack of Zhonghua cigarettes from his pocket, gave one to the army captain who was with him, and lit one up and smoked it himself.

They were the only two soldiers in the command post, and the other leaders wisely refrained from joining in the fun.

Li Lu said sincerely, "Company Commander Xiong, I'm sorry to have troubled you."

Xiong Guangming quickly replied, "No, no, it's what we should do."

Li Lu said, "I heard you're going to convert your entire organization into a mobile division of the People's Armed Police."

Xiong Guangming was taken aback and said, "There's no official order yet. Captain Li, you... you didn't seem nervous at all just now."

The entire construction site knew about the accident that had just happened. For the pilot, it was like a brush with death. But Xiong Guangming was surprised to find that Li Lu showed no emotional fluctuations at all, as if he was the one who had just gone through a life-or-death experience.

Li Lu took a drag of his cigarette and chuckled, "For us pilots, taking off is like stepping into the gates of hell with one foot in the grave. We're mentally prepared for the worst. Besides, flying a plane requires a high level of mental fortitude, so this is nothing."

"I admire you, the pilot is truly remarkable." Xiong Guangming nodded repeatedly.

Li Lu asked, "Company Commander Xiong, would it be convenient for me to borrow your beds? Any cots will do, I'm really exhausted."

"No problem! Absolutely no problem! Let's go to my dorm." Xiong Guangming immediately got up and led Li Lu to his dorm.

Li Lu washed up, borrowed Xiong Guangming's camouflage short-sleeved physical training uniform to change into, and went to sleep immediately, falling asleep within two minutes.

Xiong Guangming stared in disbelief, thinking to himself, "This guy really has a lot of nerve to do, flying a plane..."
