Chapter 57 Decision
He walked up to Lu Yuan and said, word by word:
"First, you must drink holy water every day to stabilize your sanity."
"Secondly, stay away from anything related to the strange dream as much as possible, but you won't be able to come into contact with it for the time being."
"Finally, let Ink monitor your sanity every night before you go to sleep, so that it can at least pull you out of trouble in time if something goes wrong."
Ink nodded upon hearing this: "I can do that."
Morgan Sr. continued, "Finally, I will find a way to contact the Dreamweavers of the Empire."
"But I'm not sure if we can get them to come."
Lu Yuan took a deep breath and nodded solemnly.
"I understand, thank you, old Morgan."
Old Morgan snorted, his expression remaining serious.
"Don't thank me yet, there's something else."
His gaze was fixed on Lu Yuan.
"What did you see when you had those strange dreams?"
Lu Yuan remained silent for a moment, gathered his thoughts, and then began to describe.
The Iron Whale, stranded on the beach.
Ruins covered with sacrificial runes.
And there were those people in gray cloaks chanting eerie prayers before the altar.
And...that indescribable, colossal shadow rising from the deep sea.
As Morgan listened, his brows furrowed deeper and his expression grew increasingly grave.
After Lu Yuan finished speaking, the room fell silent again.
Morgan stood there, silent.
After a long while, he finally spoke, his voice hoarse:
"Come with me."
He turned and walked towards the door.
"Let's go to the archives."
"I've already checked the file," Lu Yuan said, following behind.
"The files you see are numbered files; those need to be reported to headquarters. We have much more detailed files here."
Old Morgan led Lu Yuan to the archives.
Instead of heading to the shelves arranged by number, he went to a cabinet piled high with files. After rummaging through it, old Morgan took a thick file folder from deep inside the shelf.
The words "Iron Whale" were written on the bag in black ink.
Old Morgan spread the file out on the table; the contents were much more detailed than what Lu Yuan had seen before.
"The Iron Whale is the largest ocean-going vessel in Grim Harbor by tonnage." Old Morgan turned to the first page. "It has triple protective inscriptions on its hull, is equipped with custom-made holy light equipment, and can sail in the deep sea for more than thirty days."
"There are no more than five ships with this capability in the entire port."
His finger traced a flight log.
"On October 17, the Iron Whale set sail as planned, heading to the whale fall area in the north to harvest deep-sea fish oil. This is a routine operation, and we make two or three trips every year."
"On November 12, on their return voyage, their trawl nets hauled up a batch of ore."
Old Morgan pulled out a yellowed hand-drawn sketch depicting a sharply angled, deep blue crystal.
"Captain Gregory recorded in the logbook—"
He read aloud the text: "'The ore is deep blue, cool to the touch, and contains extremely powerful energy fluctuations. Preliminary tests show that its energy density is more than three times that of ordinary extraordinary materials.'"
"This is a windfall, and the crew is very excited. I have marked the approximate coordinates of the fishing area and will report it upon returning to port."
Old Morgan paused for a moment: "The fishing site is more than four hundred nautical miles from Grim Port, almost at the edge of the nautical chart. That area will have almost no records; it is completely unknown waters."
Lu Yuan frowned upon seeing this: "They just brought the ore back like that?"
"Nobody thought there was a problem at the time," old Morgan scoffed. "After all, that thing looked priceless."
He turned to the next page, his tone becoming heavy.
"On November 15, the Iron Whale returned to port, and five days later, the crew began to show symptoms."
The file contained a stack of medical records and research reports.
Old Morgan didn't read them out one by one, but simply summarized: "Insomnia, nightmares, auditory hallucinations... At first, everyone thought it was just a normal aftereffect of sailing, but the symptoms became more and more serious."
"We then intervened and conducted detailed tests on the ore."
He pulled out a report stamped with a red seal.
"The conclusion is: the ore does indeed contain extremely powerful energy, but it also carries a high concentration of spiritual pollution."
"Both of these characteristics exist simultaneously, and the pollution continues to be released."
Morgan Sr. closed the report: "We have sealed off the ore, isolated the crew members who had been in contact with it, and are treating them with decontamination."
"But one problem has never been solved."
"The source of the ore." At this moment, Lu Yuan understood the meaning behind Old Morgan's words.
"Yes." Old Morgan nodded. "What exactly is in that sea? Why would such a thing appear there? More importantly—if that power could be utilized, its value would be immeasurable."
He flipped to the last part of the file, where the paper was clearly newer.
"On November 20, the Iron Whale set sail again."
"The goal is to locate the source of the ore based on its coordinates, assess its mining value, and investigate the root causes of pollution."
"This time, they not only took Gawain and his team, but also two priests from the church and three alchemists from the Ascension Society."
Old Morgan's voice lowered: "Before departure, the captain sent a report via the extraordinary beacon: 'Departed port, heading southeast, expected to arrive at the target area in seven days.'"
"and then?"
"And then that was it."
Old Morgan closed the file.
"Maritime communication is inherently difficult. Storms, fog, and nighttime can all interfere with beacons, and there are also various strange and deep-sea creatures that can cause disturbances. We waited for ten days without any news."
"Have you sent a ship to search for it?"
"We searched," old Morgan sneered. "The small boats we sent out encountered fog on the third day and were almost completely wiped out. They barely managed to turn back, and we organized two more searches afterward, but found nothing."
"Thirty-eight lives were lost in the sea."
Silence spread through the archives.
Old Morgan's gaze fell on the nautical chart marked with fishing coordinates, his finger slowly tracing across the blank, unknown sea area.
"You just said that in your dream you saw the Iron Whale stranded on the side of an island."
Lu Yuan nodded and said:
"The ship was old and dilapidated, as if it had been stranded for a long time, and there was a group of people in gray cloaks moving around in front of the altar."
Morgan was silent for a moment after hearing this, then his expression turned serious:
"The gray cloak... most likely belongs to the Deep Sea Church."
He pondered for a moment, a glint of light flashing in his cloudy eyes.
That makes sense.
"The ore is very likely a trap."
"The Deep Sea Church deliberately allowed the Iron Whale to dredge ore in that area, used it to contaminate the crew, and then used these people to bring the contamination back to Grim Harbor."
Lu Yuan added, "And in my dream I saw them preparing some kind of ritual."
"They were chanting 'Give this city to them'..."
