Chapter 303 New Supplies
Lu Yuan left Klaus's office and closed the door behind him.
The corridor was quiet. The oil lamps on the walls had been dimmed, leaving only enough light to barely see the ground beneath one's feet. The branch's corridors were always like this at night, and the sound of footsteps on the floor tiles carried a little further than during the day.
He walked down the corridor toward his room, his mind still replaying what Klaus had just said.
Gubo Town is recruiting two talents.
This was also my first time leading a team independently as captain.
To be honest, Lu Yuan wasn't opposed to this, but he wasn't particularly confident either. How long had he been a member of the Night's Watch? He was still a newbie who had just barely reached the threshold of the second tier, and now he was going to judge whether others were qualified to join the Night's Watch.
Of course, we are only considering the time factor here.
However, Klaus's judgment has always been very accurate, and he must have had his reasons for entrusting this matter to me.
As he passed the fork in the road leading to Zone C, Lu Yuan paused for a moment.
The light at the end of the corridor in Zone C was still on, pointing towards room number seven.
He thought of Kel.
After the incident with the tree spirit, the contamination on Kel's shoulder was suppressed by him using the aura of the seed and a hastily prepared fire-type potion.
For the sake of Kael's injury, the old man Beren, who valued his life, went with him to cause trouble for the Forest Clan.
Now that a few days have passed, Kel should have recovered somewhat, right? Although the holy water and the seed can clear away the parasitic structure, the parts of the tissue that have been corroded must grow back on their own.
Just then, a sound came from the corner of the front hall.
There were two sets of footsteps.
One was the sound of a cane tapping, the other was lighter, with even but slightly slower steps, and a very subtle pause when the foot landed.
Buren came out from around the corner first.
The old man looked better than he had a couple of days ago; at least his face was no longer a pale, bluish color. However, he was still walking very slowly, and the inscription on his cane was still somewhat faded, but the corrosion marks that had appeared on it had been repaired.
Half a step behind him was Kel.
The boy was wearing a loose cotton shirt with a low neckline, revealing a large patch of gauze above his left collarbone.
The gauze covered the front of the shoulder down to the collarbone, and the edges were secured with white medical tape.
You can see some faint color under the gauze; the dark green has faded, revealing the new pinkish skin that is healing.
His face was still a little pale, but his eyes were clear.
"Lu Yuan?" Boren stopped and tilted his head slightly, his eyes lighting up when he saw the newcomer. "Your injuries have healed? It seems you're recovering quite well?"
"Um."
Lu Yuan smiled, indicating that he had no problem.
Boren looked Lu Yuan up and down, and couldn't help but smack his lips.
"You're really amazing. You didn't die in that situation. When I saw you separated, I even planned what to wear to visit you."
"I have timekeeping capabilities, which give me a greater ability to protect myself than most people."
Lu Yuan didn't mince words, raising an eyebrow as he spoke:
"But that attack of yours was terrifying enough. If it had been any stronger, '9' would probably have died right there."
Buren shook his head.
"You overestimate me. I also relied on the power of the Bronze City. This is one of the benefits of my approach. On the ground of this city, I can definitely protect myself."
"Unfortunately, it was underground at the time, and quite deep..."
Lu Yuan and Bo Lun exchanged a smile and didn't continue the topic; after all, being alive was already a good thing.
"You went to see Klaus?"
"Hmm." Lu Yuan nodded, shifting his gaze from Beren to Kel. "How is it?"
This was said to Kel.
Kel bowed slightly. "Much better, Captain." Kel's voice wasn't loud, but she looked much better. "Captain Margaret changed my dressing again today and said it will be ready to be removed in another four or five days."
Lu Yuan looked at his shoulder; the gauze was wrapped neatly, in the style of Margaret.
Does it hurt?
"It's okay during the day, but it pulls when I turn over at night," Kai said frankly, without bragging or exaggerating.
Beren snorted beside him. "I told you not to sleep on your side, but you insisted on doing it anyway."
"Master, my back is sweating when I sleep on my back..."
"It's better to sweat than to wake up in pain in the middle of the night."
Beren gave a curt rebuke, but tapped his cane on the ground and said nothing more.
Kai'er was used to being spoken to like that by her master. Her lips twitched slightly, but she didn't respond.
Lu Yuan asked, "Is the inscribed stone tablet still there?"
He remembered that the last time Kai'er fainted, she was carrying that inscribed directional stone tablet in her arms.
Kel instinctively pressed her right hand to her chest. "Yes."
"Take good care of yourself." Lu Yuan nodded. "Don't rush into a decision; wait until you've fully recovered."
Kai'er responded, while Boren, who was standing nearby, did not interrupt, but glanced at Lu Yuan, probably not expecting that Lu Yuan was still thinking about the stone slab.
"And you?" Lu Yuan turned to Beren. "How's your recovery going?"
"My old bones can still hold up." Beren shifted his cane to the other hand. "The inscription hasn't recovered yet; I estimate it'll take a few more days to heal."
His tone was a bit flatter than usual.
When Boren is unwell, he talks even less, a pattern that Lu Yuan gradually discovered after spending time with him.
After the battle in the underground hall, both of them knew each other's situation.
The things he encountered underground left him with more than just physical exhaustion; Lu Yuan's sanity cap was reduced by fifty points, and there's still no sign of it recovering.
Beren's inscriptions were completely depleted, and much of his confidence was gone. Of course, Lu Yuan didn't know exactly what he had consumed.
"Did Klaus mention anything about you?" Lu Yuan suddenly remembered this matter and asked another question.
Beren's expression didn't change much, but he tapped the ground with his cane an extra time.
"I did." He paused. "Headquarters is urging us; it'll be in a few days."
Kai's expression shifted slightly, but he looked down at the ground without saying a word.
"That's good. It's best to finish the selection quickly and leave. It's really not safe here," Lu Yuan changed the subject. "Tomorrow I have to go out and deliver some supplies to a town in the south for the branch. I'll probably be back in three to five days."
Buren glanced at him.
"How are you feeling?"
"That's enough. My sanity has returned quickly, and my body has recovered considerably as well."
Beren scanned him up and down, his gaze lingering on his face for two seconds; the old inscription master had a sharp eye.
People who deal with inscriptions year-round are extremely sensitive to the condition of "normal on the surface but damaged underneath," and he could roughly tell that Lu Yuan's current condition was just average.
But he didn't say it explicitly.
"Take care of yourself," Beren said as a final word. "Your sanity hasn't fully recovered. Don't push yourself."
"Know."
Kale bowed slightly beside him. "Captain, be careful on the road."
Lu Yuan nodded.
Beren turned around, tapping his cane on the ground as he walked to the other end of the corridor.
Kel followed half a step behind. After a few steps, Buren suddenly stopped and looked back.
"Come back soon."
Then they continued walking.
The sounds of the cane and footsteps gradually faded into the distance, one heavy and one light, one in front and one behind, until they finally disappeared around the corner of the corridor.
Lu Yuan stood there for a while, then turned and went to Margaret's office, intending to ask for some resources.
After all, I'm going on a long trip. How can I ensure my safety without carrying some weapons with me?
As Lu Yuan thought about it, he went to the largest room in the logistics department, and sure enough, Margaret was still awake.
The room was filled with a large number of unmade potions and boxes of ammunition.
Margaret was sitting at her workbench, making something in front of a kerosene lamp.
"Hmm? Lu Yuan, you're feeling better?" Margaret looked up at Lu Yuan, her hands still slowly grinding the medicinal herbs.
"You're still making medicine?" Lu Yuan looked at Margaret, this extraordinary person, with thick dark circles under her eyes, and remained silent for a moment.
"We're almost there, do you want to come and help?"
Margaret looked up at Lu Yuan and blinked.
"I have a mission tomorrow."
Lu Yuan decisively chose to refuse.
"Fine..." Margaret continued with her work, her enthusiasm waning.
"Then what are you doing here?"
"I'm out of bullets. I'm going on a mission right away to get some supplies."
Margaret looked miserable.
"So they were debt collectors."
As Margaret spoke, she put down the powder in her hand and then opened the small box next to her.
"Choose for yourself, these are all yours. By the way, your mission level isn't high this time, so the danger level over there is quite low for you."
"I suggest you just bring something casually."
After Margaret finished speaking, she went back to preparing the potion.
Lu Yuan didn't stand on ceremony and immediately walked to the side of the box to look inside.
Inside, there were neatly stacked silver-plated, copper-cased incendiary bombs, as well as a type of bullet that Lu Yuan had never seen before.
Next to it were jars containing something resembling mithril and some common potions.
But it's much smaller.
[Target for detection: Pure silver bullet]
Do you know what pure power is? You've seen it now.
[Alchemy knowledge detected... Parsing failed.]
Lu Yuan looked at the small jar with its silvery-green shimmering substance, picked it up, and asked about it.
"What is this?"
Margaret glanced at it.
"Oh, the latest mithril, a little gadget just made by the alchemy department. It's said to be almost as lethal as mithril, but much more stable. You have a quota of one bottle, you can take it and try it out."
Upon hearing this, Lu Yuan raised an eyebrow, decisively packed it up and took it away, along with a small box of copper-cased incendiary bombs and pure silver bullets, totaling 20 rounds.
He also carried several bottles of sanity potions and healing potions.
"Then I'll be going now."
"Go ahead, go ahead."
Lu Yuan put his things away and turned to go back to his room.
Pushing open the door, I saw that the window was half open.
The night wind blew in from outside, carrying the unique smell of metal and soot that was characteristic of Bronze City.
The light from the electric lamp shone through the windowpane, casting a pale blue-white hue on the edge of the bed.
The "Flame" sat on the bedside table, its bronze surface gleaming coldly.
Lu Yuan put the gun away, changed his clothes, and lay down on the bed.
Physical exhaustion overwhelmed all other thoughts.
He closed his eyes and quickly fell asleep.
