As dawn broke and the gray-white mist over Kaoshantun had not yet completely dissipated, the Lai family's main residence was already in an uproar.
Ma Dazui didn't sleep a wink all night. Before dawn, he woke up all the able-bodied men and women in his clan.
A dozen or so men, some wearing cotton-padded coats, some carrying sticks, and some carrying flatbed carts, all poured out of the Lai family's courtyard.
In front was Ma Dazui, and behind him was a broken flatbed cart.
Zhao Shanlin lay on top, his pants half-down, his face as white as a ghost, and the blood seeping from the gauze on his lower body stained the car floor red.
With each jolt of the flatbed cart, he screamed in agony, like a chicken being choked: "Gently! Gently—!"
"I really can't go on! Stop jostling me—!"
Li Cuihua wasn't much better off.
She couldn't even touch half of her buttocks properly, so two members of the Lai family supported her on either side as they walked. Her face was swollen, and she was missing teeth, but her mouth never stopped, cursing louder than anyone else's all the way: "Ma Dazui! Are you in such a hurry to be reincarnated?!"
"Why are you walking so fast?!"
"My ass is rotten, you heartless, rotten old slut, couldn't you at least ask someone to carry me?!"
"You want me to crawl along with you while my butt is clenched? Are you trying to make me die of pain?!"
Ma Dazui's temples throbbed from the constant bickering of the mother and son. Finally, he whirled around and yelled at the people behind him, "Shut up, both of you!"
Li Cuihua was taken aback at first, then, with her neck stiff, she was about to yell, "Who are you yelling at—"
Before he could finish speaking, Ma Dazui, his face ashen, pointed and shouted, "Gag those two!"
The two men were already fed up with it, so they immediately responded.
One person held Zhao Shanlin's head down, while the other ripped off his smelly socks, crumpled them up, and stuffed them into his mouth.
"Ugh! Ugh!"
Zhao Shanlin's eyes nearly popped out of their sockets, his face turned bright red, and he was convulsing on the flatbed.
When Li Cuihua saw that her son had been cornered, she was about to start cursing when a woman next to her grabbed her chin, tore off a wad of smelly sock, and stuffed it into her mouth.
"Waaaaah! Waaaaah!"
Li Cuihua's mouth was finally shut up, leaving only a series of muffled sounds in her throat.
Ma Dazui then turned back, looking at the misty dirt road ahead, and took a breath: "Kaoshantun is just ahead. Remember what we said before we left?"
As soon as she finished speaking, a naive young man in his early twenties grinned and said, "Hey lady, aren't you being too long-winded? Do you even need to remember this? It's just our old job! A bunch of us rush in, block the door, brandish a knife, and he'll dare not hand over the money obediently!"
As he spoke, he smugly pulled a short knife from under his cotton-padded coat and waved it in his hand: "Look, I've got everything ready—"
Before he could finish speaking, Ma Dazui rushed forward and slapped him across the face.
"Snapped!"
The boy's head snapped to one side after being slapped, and half of his face immediately turned red.
"Who the hell gave you permission to bring a knife?!"
Ma Dazui's eyes nearly popped out of their sockets. He snatched the knife, slammed it to the ground, and pointed at the man's nose, yelling, "What do you think you're doing?! You want to fight Zhao Shanhe?! Have you lost your mind?!"
The dazed boy covered his face, completely stunned. His lips trembled, and he looked at her with a mournful expression: "I wasn't thinking..."
"I miss your mother!"
Ma Dazui spat on the ground, whirled around, and yelled at the group behind him, "Anyone else with weapons?!"
When she yelled, the group behind her looked at each other, and surprisingly, a few people actually slowly raised their hands.
One person had a kitchen knife hidden under their cotton-padded jacket, another had an iron shovel tucked into their waistband, and an old woman with a metal ring wrapped around the end of her cane—clearly, she wasn't up to any good either.
When Ma Dazui saw this, his face trembled with rage, and he pointed at them and cursed:
"Throw them all away! Knives! Clubs! Iron bars! Every single one of them, throw them all to the side of the road!"
"We're here today to seek justice, not to rob! Zhao Shanhe is the factory director of Hongxing Machinery Factory, with thousands of men under his command and powerful connections. You think you can take him on head-on? How many heads do you have?"
"People like this aren't most afraid of knives, they're most afraid of losing face!"
"I'm in the right now. He's the one who put my most beloved son in the hospital, and we still don't know if he's alive or dead! I'm going there today to seek justice and an explanation."
"When we get to Kaoshantun, everyone start banging the gongs, banging the basins, and shouting at the top of your lungs!"
"The men stand in front to support me, and the women and old ladies cry, the more they cry, the better; the bigger the scene, the better!"
"As long as you expose his shame in public and make him lose face, he will have to admit defeat and pay up!"
"But if anyone dares to be clever and ruin my plans with a knife or a stick—"
"Don't blame me for being ruthless, old woman..."
Her eyes widened as she scanned the faces of each of the men from her clan:
"Did you understand?!"
"Understood, eldest sister!"
"They're all gone, not a single one left!"
The men were terrified by her cannibalistic appearance and dared not hold back any longer. They threw all the kitchen knives in their arms and the iron shovels on their waists into the deep snowdrifts by the roadside.
Ma Dazui coldly scanned the area, making sure no one was hiding anything anymore, before waving his hand: "Let's go! Into Kaoshantun!"
At Ma Dazui's command, the dozen or so members of the Lai family sprang into action again.
As soon as they entered the village, Ma Dazui suddenly swung his arm and banged the broken gong in his hand so loudly it shook the heavens.
"Clang! Clang! Clang!"
The ear-piercing metallic clanging sound was particularly startling in the quiet morning.
"Everyone, come out and see! There's no law anymore!"
Ma Dazui opened his mouth, his voice like a broken bellows, and began wailing at the top of his lungs, banging on a gong: "Zhao Shanhe, the big director of the Red Star Machinery Factory, is going to kill someone! He's abandoned his own mother now that he's in power, ordering his own sister to shoot and kill their neighbor! He's heartless! This is outrageous!"
As if receiving a signal, the group of Lai family women behind them suddenly sat down on the ground, slapping their thighs and wailing loudly, "Heavens above! Open your eyes and see! Zhao Shanhe has turned into a beast since becoming an official! He's going to kill his own brother!"
The howling and the jarring sound of the gong startled the dogs in the village, causing them to bark incessantly. Many villagers who had just gotten up, not even bothering to button up their cotton-padded coats, peeked and peered over.
Seeing that more and more people were gathering, Ma Dazui felt more confident and gave Zhao Ergou a wink.
Without saying a word, Zhao Ergou suddenly overturned the flatbed cart.
"Ugh—!"
With his mouth gagged, Zhao Shanlin was thrown down like a sack and slammed heavily onto the cold ground.
The gauze on his lower body bled again as it was pulled, and the fishy smell spread immediately.
He writhed in pain, but could only let out muffled, desperate groans through his nose.
Ma Dazui pointed at Zhao Shanlin on the ground and shouted to the surrounding villagers, "Look at this! This is what Zhao Shanhe did with his dogs! His own brother! One bite from the dog almost destroyed his manhood, the one that carries on the family line! Whether he can still have children in this life is now uncertain!"
"Tell me, how utterly ruthless is he?!"
She then grabbed Li Cuihua, who was being held up, and roughly ripped the smelly sock out of her mouth.
Li Cuihua, barely able to catch her breath, coughed twice, her eyes darting around as she looked at the familiar neighbors. She immediately plopped down on the snow, her hair disheveled, slapping her thighs and wailing, "I don't want to live anymore! Zhao Shanhe, you ungrateful wretch! You encouraged that brat Xiaoyu to fire the gun! You wanted to kill your own mother!"
In an instant, cries, curses, and the sound of gongs erupted at the front door of Zhao Shanhe's house.
