Chapter 190 Putting on Airs
The sun was already high in the sky, making people dizzy.
Half of the snow in the yard had melted, spreading out on the cement ground in a wet, shiny patch mixed with mud and water. When the sun shone on it, it exuded a sticky, cold feeling.
The twenty or so people had been waiting so long they were practically unrecognizable, lying sprawled on the ground in disarray.
Some huddled together in twos and threes under the base of the machine tools, while others sat directly on the damp, cold cement floor, their backs pressed firmly against the icy machines.
The water in the teacup had long since cooled down, and a thin film of oil had formed on the surface. No one touched it, and no one spoke.
Zhu Zi craned his neck so high he was almost out of his seat, staring at the door until his eyes ached. Finally, he couldn't hold back any longer and muttered a curse under his breath:
"Is that bastard ever coming or not? It's almost noon."
Wang Daikui was squatting by the machine, having already stomped on several cigarette butts. Upon hearing this, his anger flared up immediately.
"What a load of crap!"
"That grandson probably hasn't even gotten off the bed yet!"
"There are over twenty of us here, stuck in the wind since early morning, while he's probably somewhere huddled in his warm bed, dreaming away! Damn it, how can you teach people like that? Even the Soviet Union, our old big brother, though he had a bad temper and was always yelling and glaring, at least he was punctual. He was always there when he said he'd be there, and he never shirked his duties. What kind of bastard is this Liang? He takes our money and expects us to wait."
Liang Tiejun's expression was also not good. He paced back and forth at the door, his leather shoes making muffled and disordered sounds as they stepped on the wet cement floor.
He looked up at the sun in the courtyard, his brows furrowing into a deep knot, and finally tilted his head to ask a question.
"Did Xiao Wang go to pick him up?"
Zhang Dafa leaned against the door frame with his arms crossed, his face grim.
"He left before dawn. Before going back last night, he even washed and cleaned the old Shanghai car in the factory. At five o'clock, he didn't even have time to eat breakfast before driving to the hotel in the city."
Liang Tiejun pursed his lips, his breathing becoming heavier.
"The hotel is only thirty or forty miles from here, and the sun is practically overhead. Haven't they brought him back yet? Even if that old Shanghainese can't run anymore, they should be able to push him back by now. That clever little Wang wouldn't have lost him on the way, would he?"
Zhang Dafa sneered, his eyes gleaming with malice.
"It's not going to get lost. I reckon that big shot hasn't been properly dealt with yet. Don't you know Xiao Wang's temper? He'd practically carry someone onto his car and worship them. The fact that he hasn't come back only means that the ancestor never intended to set off in the first place. We're in a real crisis here, while they're probably leisurely enjoying their morning tea over there."
Liang Tiejun paused for two seconds, then forced a smile and said, "They're probably still preparing some materials. After all, they're from Hong Kong, so it's normal for them to be meticulous. Let's wait a bit longer."
Another half day passed.
The oppressive atmosphere in the warehouse grew heavier and heavier, attracting more and more onlookers.
Some people squatted by the door smoking, while others peered through the window, occasionally whispering among themselves.
Zhu Zi endured it for a long time, and finally moved forward half a step.
"Master, why don't we touch them ourselves first?"
Old Chen didn't even look up, only coldly tossing out a sentence:
"Nobody move."
"You haven't even figured it out yet, so keep your hands under control."
The pillar was silenced by those words and could only shrink back, letting out a muffled breath.
Liang Tiejun pursed his lips, finally unable to hold back any longer, and turned to give an order outside:
"Go to the cafeteria and tell them to heat up the food first."
"We can't let our stomachs get upset before the person even arrives."
"We've arrived. Let's eat first, then we can talk business."
No sooner had he finished speaking than the roar of a car engine suddenly came from outside the courtyard.
Everyone in the warehouse looked up at once.
Wang Daikui stood up straight, gritting his teeth as he looked outside.
"Oh shit."
"Our ancestors have finally arrived."
Liang Tiejun didn't respond to that, but walked out with a sullen face.
Zhao Shanhe and Zhang Dafa also followed them out.
As soon as the group of people reached the warehouse entrance, they saw the shiny black sedan slowly turn into the yard, creak, and come to a steady stop in front of the gate.
Two seconds later, the driver's side door opened first.
Xiao Wang jumped out of the car, his face pale from the wind and his eyes slightly bluish, clearly having had a rough morning.
He didn't even have time to catch his breath before rushing around to the back to open the rear door, his hand barely touching the door handle.
Assistant A-Kang suddenly rushed over from the other side and slapped Xiao Wang's hand away.
"What are you doing? What are you doing?!"
Ah Kang glared at him, lowered his voice, and launched into a tirade.
"What kind of car were you driving just now? It was wobbling all over the place!"
"Mr. Liang was resting with his eyes closed in the back seat when you jostled him so much he almost got a stomachache! Were you blind to see those big craters? They made me feel like throwing up, my stomach was churning!"
"Be more careful next time, okay?"
As he cursed, A-Kang snatched the doorknob with disdain, skillfully opening it a crack. He first blocked the draft by turning to the side, then bent over, his tone instantly becoming sweet and cloying.
"Mr. Liang, we've arrived. The road conditions here are absolutely terrible."
The back door opened, and Liang Jiajun slowly got out of the car.
She changed her coat into a longer, dark-colored trench coat, the collar of which was stiff and straight, and even her hair looked like it had been combed again, so shiny it could reflect light.
As soon as he got out of the car, he didn't look at anyone. Instead, he lowered his head to straighten his cuffs, then pulled his scarf down and tidied his hair.
Zhao Shanhe stood to the side, watching the man he had picked up looking so respectable, and a slight twitch appeared on his lips.
"Mr. Liang, you've arrived at just the right time."
"We were just getting ready to go have lunch."
Upon hearing this, Liang Jiajun's expression paused slightly, but the awkwardness was fleeting.
He raised his hand to straighten his cuffs and spoke calmly.
"I was preparing materials this morning."
"I already looked at the machine the day before yesterday. Today, I really need to get people to use it. There are some things I need to figure out first."
"I'm not used to working on the parameters, the order, and some areas that are prone to problems. I always have to go through them first."
Ah Kang immediately chimed in, a forced smile on his face.
"Mr. Liang is always meticulous in his work. Since he is going to teach people, he can't just stand by the machine and start speaking. He has to prepare everything beforehand."
Wang Daikui stood at the back and snorted.
"It's easier said than done."
Liang Tiejun's smile froze for a moment, but he still managed to salvage the situation by gesturing towards the cafeteria.
"Alright, let's not talk about this anymore."
"The food is already heated up, Mr. Liang, please go and have something warm first."
"Don't worry, we won't be using the cafeteria's main kitchen. We've specially hired a chef who knows how to cook Western food. The bread, eggs, and soup will all be made separately. Just grab a bite to eat first, and we'll talk business later."
"No."
Liang Jiajun interrupted him calmly with a single sentence.
"I've already eaten in town."
He raised his hand and dusted off his sleeve, speaking in a calm and unhurried tone.
"And to be honest, I'm not entirely comfortable with what you call Western food here."
"The things made in places like this are mostly not up to standard."
The entrance fell silent.
Liang Tiejun's smile froze, Zhang Dafa's face darkened, and Wang Daikui, standing behind, gritted his teeth, his cheeks puffing out.
Liang Jiajun, however, acted as if he hadn't seen anything, holding his thermos and glancing towards the warehouse.
"Forget about the meal."
"Let's go straight to the warehouse."
"I have limited time this afternoon and don't want to waste any more."
After saying that, he turned and walked away, still in that unhurried manner.
Ah Kang, carrying his bag, quickly followed, and after taking a few steps, he turned back and nodded at Xiao Wang.
"Take the cup, don't leave it behind."
Xiao Wang exclaimed "Hey!" and, clutching his cup, jogged after him.
Liang Tiejun stood still for two seconds, suppressing his anger.
"Let's go."
Zhao Shanhe didn't say anything, but followed him out.
The twenty or so people behind them, with grim faces, headed towards the warehouse together.
