Chapter 13 Settling Down
The two playfully wrestled for a while, and finally Wu Xinxue got her wish and pinched Su Yang's face before stopping.
The flour mill's staff quarters are located behind the factory; you have to go around the factory gate to get there.
On the way, Wu Xinxue told Su Yang about the accommodation regulations she had heard during the report.
The factory dormitory is only for single employees; it is a six-person room and is free of charge.
The family compound houses can only be applied for by employees with family members, and rent must be paid.
Wu Xinxue applied for staff and family housing, and starting next month, 6 points will be deducted from her monthly salary.
There were no security guards at the entrance of the residential compound, only an old man in his fifties who was guarding the gate. When he learned that Wu Xinxue was a new employee of the flour factory, he registered her and let her in.
The houses in the courtyard are rows of brand-new two-story buildings, clearly modeled after the architectural style of the older brother in the north, with a structure similar to the future tenement buildings.
Su Yang counted them and found there were 10 buildings in total, with 18 households in each building, 9 on the upper floor and 9 on the lower floor.
"Building 3, Room 209..." Wu Xinxue glanced at the key number tag Xu Hongyan had given her, and eagerly pulled Su Yang, saying, "Let's hurry and find our way home!"
"Don't panic." Su Yang pulled her back, holding the slip of paper Xu Hongyan had given him, and said, "Go get your bedding first, otherwise you'll have to run back down."
"Right, right, right! I almost forgot about that," Wu Xinxue said, sticking out her tongue.
The two arrived at room 101 of a building, following the address written on the note.
A thick felt curtain hung outside the door, and a wooden sign was nailed to one wall—Limin State-owned Flour Factory Consumer Service Center. The lights were still on inside.
The two lifted the curtain and went inside. Inside, there was a counter, and behind it sat a middle-aged woman knitting. Behind her was a shelf that took up an entire wall, filled with a dazzling array of daily necessities and groceries.
There was also a small door on one side of the wall, which connected to room 102 next door.
"Hey! New employee! What would you like to order?"
The sales clerk could tell from the items the two were carrying that they were newcomers, and stood up behind the counter with a smile.
Su Yang handed over the slip of paper and said with a smile, "Comrade, let's get our bedding first, and we can buy the rest after we get the bedding back."
The sales clerk nodded, took the slip of paper, glanced at it, then looked at the two of them and said, "Two bedding sets? Why don't you two take one? Two sets are worth 120 million, and you'd have to pay back 5 every month? When will you ever be able to pay that back?"
Seeing that the note said Wu Xinxue and Su Yang were siblings, she couldn't help but offer her suggestion.
Shenzhou often receives employees from other places because the weather here is extremely cold, and the bedding used by locals weighs over 10 jin (5 catties).
These days, cotton cloth is expensive, and cotton is even more expensive. Even if the government only pays the cost price for thick bedding, it still costs 60 yuan.
New employees who don't have bedding can buy it on credit at the factory's consumer service center, whether they live in the dormitory or the staff quarters. The money will be deducted from their wages each month to pay it back gradually.
Upon hearing this, Wu Xinxue glanced at Su Yang, her face slightly flushed, and was about to say that they should just share one bed.
Su Yang waved his hand and said, "We're both too old to sleep together, so we'll have two beds."
"That's true." The sales clerk nodded and came out from behind the counter, saying, "Wait here, I'll go to the warehouse next door to get it for you."
"You've gone to a lot of trouble."
Su Yang watched as the sales clerk went through a side door, then listlessly looked at the goods on the counter and shelves.
This consumer club is small but complete.
From cooking oil, salt, soy sauce, and vinegar to cabbage, to tofu, and even daily necessities, almost everything was available. Several pieces of paper were pasted on the counter, which read:
Limited daily supply of 3 jin of Grade B pork and 2 jin of soybean oil. Quantities are limited, first come, first served.
We sell bath tickets for Hu Family Bathhouse.
We act as agents for selling firewood and coal.
Please show your liquor ticket before ordering.
No returns or exchanges after leaving the counter.
A short while later, the saleswoman squeezed in through the small door carrying two bedding sets.
Seeing that she was completely buried in the bedding, Su Yang and the other person quickly went to help.
The two placed the bedding on the stool and checked it over.
The room is fully equipped with quilts, mattresses, sheets, pillows, and pillowcases.
To be honest, such a thick bedding would cost at least seven or eight hundred thousand yuan in a private shop.
After confirming that there were no problems with the two bedding sets, Wu Xinxue signed and pressed her fingerprint on the slip of paper and left it with the salesperson. The two of them then left the consumer cooperative carrying one bedding set each.
"1......2......3".
Wu Xinxue counted the buildings, and the two stopped in front of one of them.
The buildings are spaced far apart, and a row of burlap sacks is neatly piled up in the open space in front of them.
The sacks were labeled with names, and the open sacks revealed that they contained coal from various households.
The two went up the stairs to the second floor. The stairwell was almost half occupied by clutter, with each household's doorway piled with their own messy belongings.
Walk all the way to the end, and the innermost room is 209. Wu Xinxue, carrying her bedding, awkwardly tried to open the door with her key, but couldn't get it into the keyhole after a few tries.
"Huh? You guys just moved in?"
Hearing the noise, a woman in her forties came out from next door, 208.
"Come on, let me help you."
The woman was clearly kind-hearted; seeing Wu Xinxue struggling to open the door with her bedding, she quickly came to help, muttering to herself:
"Old Sun, who used to live in this house, moved to Chuncheng with his family. I was wondering when new neighbors would move in, but I didn't expect you to arrive in just three days."
"My surname is Ma, and my husband's surname is Niu. He is the liaison for our building. He is responsible for collecting our building's electricity bill. Since you two have just arrived, you can come to us if you have any difficulties."
The woman was very talkative. After Wu Xinxue opened the door, she helped carry the bedding inside, but then immediately backed out.
"You two pack up first, just let me know if you need anything."
After saying that, she left the room without giving Su Yang and Wu Xinxue a chance to speak.
Su Yang and Wu Xinxue exchanged a glance and both laughed.
They had just thought this woman was shameless, but it turned out she had a good sense of boundaries.
Su Yang closed the door and looked around their new home.
The room is not large, about fifteen or sixteen square meters.
The furniture was extremely simple: to the right of the entrance, against the wall, was a bare wooden double bed; to the left was a simple wardrobe of the same material; and directly opposite the door was a small window covered with thick kraft paper for warmth; under the window was an old desk and a chair.
In the two corners, there was a tin stove with a chimney on one side and a small half-bag of coal next to it.
On the other side of the corner was a single bed.
"This is our home!" Wu Xinxue's voice was filled with barely suppressed excitement and a slight, almost imperceptible tremor.
She strode to the desk, placed the new enamel basin, towels, soap, and work clothes she was carrying on it, and then, like a light bird, circled around the small space, her fingers brushing against the bed board and wardrobe doors.
"Quickly put the blanket on! I want to test how warm the new blanket is!"
As she spoke, she took another quilt from Su Yang's arms and began to make the bed. Su Yang smiled when he saw this, but did not help her. He simply pulled over the only chair in the room, sat down, and watched her work.
Now the problem of where to live has been solved.
Although Wu Xinxue's salary is not low, she has to pay 7 yuan a month for rent and bedding.
Since the two have just settled down, they need to buy a lot of things. If they rely entirely on Wu Xinxue, they will probably have to tighten their belts for the next two years.
Su Yang had finally managed to travel through time; he wasn't here to suffer.
He is actually 11 years old, but he claims to be 14. In this day and age, it is extremely difficult to make money through normal channels.
Fortunately, he has a cheat code. Once things are settled in these next couple of days, he'll take a good look at his attribute panel.
