I'm building Gundams in America

Chapter 40 Relics of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom

After parking the car in the dilapidated alley, and covering it with some newspapers and plastic bags as a disguise, Wayne and his two companions returned to the alleyways of the old underground city through the secret passage in the warehouse.

The homeless people who lived there with him had all returned. When they saw Wayne return, they all surrounded him to greet him, their eyes filled with respect.

After a long day of struggling to make a living on the streets in winter, everyone was cold and exhausted, but seeing Wayne was like seeing the only light in the world.

Many people, including old Will, even bowed their heads before Wayne, standing in two lines, begging for the Saint's touch.

Wayne walked over, touching the tops of everyone's heads, and then reached the middle of the alley.

Here, someone has thoughtfully placed a thick mattress and laid out sheets as Wayne's place.

Wayne sat cross-legged on the mattress, looked at everyone, his gaze as gentle as spring water, and slowly said:

"One of you has betrayed me."

Upon hearing this, everyone was taken aback.

David recounted his experience of the night with righteous indignation.

Old Will's eyes widened as he drew his worn-out revolver from his waist, turned to the group of homeless men present, and angrily shouted:

"Who!? Who betrayed you, sir!? Step forward!"

The faces of the crowd showed shock, anger, bewilderment, and confusion. They stood in front of Wayne, their expressions like those of a medieval oil painting in the dim light.

Mike and David stood beside Wayne, their faces equally solemn as they looked at the dozen or so homeless men, their eyes filled with anger.

Wayne had just told them that the police officer was targeting them not because of racial discrimination—or rather, racial discrimination was only part of the reason, the main reason being that he was acting on someone's orders.

And this was only the first day of their work as corpse collectors, going to the sewers to collect corpses and then selling them to St. Mary's Biotechnology Company.

The only people who know these things are the homeless people living together.

If there was a leak, then only these people could have leaked the information.

Otherwise, that corrupt cop named Jason wouldn't have been able to find them so accurately.

Old Will held a gun in his hand, looking at the dozen or so homeless men, tears welling up in his eyes:

"You bastards! Before you stands the righteous man of the world, a saint, a prophet who will save the world! Your lives were saved by him, and those who betray him are devils, destined for hell!"

At this point, old Will burst into tears, turned to Wayne, and said:

"Sir, I'm sorry, I shouldn't have taken you to the sewers. They don't deserve to be saved, they don't deserve God's blessing at all..."

The homeless people present were moved by Old Will's sincere emotions and all shed tears, swearing that they were absolutely not traitors.

Wayne simply looked at everyone calmly without saying a word, his gaze slowly sweeping over them until he met their eyes.

His gaze was calm, yet like a deep lake, capable of washing away all sins.

Finally, when a homeless man named White met Wayne's gaze, he was struck as if by lightning. Unable to bear the sacred yet oppressive atmosphere any longer, he suddenly collapsed to his knees and wept bitterly.

"Sir, I'm so sorry! I didn't know, I didn't know anyone wanted to harm you..."

"I got a call from Old Joe the Bottle. He asked how I was doing—we used to be friends back in the sewers. I told him I was following the saints and that I had been saved..."

"He said he'd recently struck it rich, got his hands on a new batch of goods, and asked if I wanted some... Then he asked me what Mr. Saint was doing... I'd heard from others that you were a mortician for the Saint Mary Company, so I told him..."

Wayne shook his head.

Even the most devout faith cannot withstand the addiction to tonics.

When the craving isn't kicking in, it's one thing, but when the craving kicks in, you're no longer human.

A devout drug addict, when experiencing a craving, might even weep and have sex with the Virgin Mary in front of Jesus.

As long as he can get the enhancer.

White suddenly raised his hand and slapped himself hard across the face, crying as he said:

"I truly had no idea he wanted to harm you! If I had the choice, I'd rather die!"

While slapping himself, White crawled forward on his knees, prostrating himself at Wayne's feet, tears streaming down his face.

Wayne looked at White and saw a line of text flash across the other's forehead:

Loyalty: Devout Repentance

Wayne asked:

"Did you tell Old Joe the bottle about this place?"

White shook his head vigorously and said:

"Absolutely not! This is our Eden, and we will not allow the devil to lay a hand on it."

Wayne nodded; this was roughly what he had read in the other party's information.

She raised her hand to touch his forehead and said softly:

"I forgive..."

White shuddered. The magnetic, compassionate voice sent shivers down his spine, and he wept uncontrollably, saying:

"Thank God, thank you! But I can't forgive myself..."

If the saint were to meet with misfortune because of his reckless disclosure, he would be the heinous Judas, destined for hell.

Your skill, Bard Performance, has been improved (Advanced 25% + 2%).

Your title "Saint" has been upgraded (Gold title 7% + 1%).

Wayne then asked:

"Do you know what to do?"

White made a prayer-like gesture with his hands, nodded vigorously, and said firmly:

"I see!"

If he encounters Old Joe the Bottle, he will fight tooth and nail to kill him.

Wayne smiled slightly and said:

"Very good. Tomorrow, you will invite Old Joe the Bottle over here."

The most cunning and difficult to defend against enemies lurking in the shadows are those that have revealed their true nature and provided clues. In fact, it is a good thing that they have shown their true colors and given you clues.

This is a good thing.

He nodded to everyone and waved.

The group of homeless people, some indignant and others worried, immediately scattered to rest.

White was then guarded by old Will and two other homeless men.

He has completely lost his trust, and it's uncertain whether he'll be able to stay here after things are resolved.

After everyone left, Mike and David came to Wayne, placed rolls of money in front of him, and began counting the banknotes.

These banknotes come in various denominations, many of them being small bills of one or five yuan.

Mike and David each took a stack, starting with one bill and dividing the different denominations of banknotes into several piles.

Finally, they calculated the final value.

21260 dollars.

"Great! I've finally saved up $20000!" Mike said excitedly in a low voice.

He originally thought this would be an impossible task.

Wayne waved his hand, took out 2000 dollars from inside, handed it to Mike, and said:

"This is the money for the car, bro."

Mike had used all the money he had saved up to buy the used car.

Mike immediately refused:

"Brother, you need this $2000 more right now. I can save up the money slowly, and you can pay me back when you earn more."

Wayne nodded, put away the $20000, gave the extra $1260 to David, and said:

Give me a gun, preferably a revolver.

He paused for a moment, then continued:

"You're not worthy either."

David happily accepted the money and said:

"Okay bro, I met a former U.S. military contractor in the march at the day-wage shop. He used to be a classified contractor for the Department of Defense for over 20 years. After he retired, the financial institution that managed his property suddenly went bankrupt, and he was implicated. He couldn't afford to pay the property tax for his mansion and ended up homeless..."

"He has some connections to get handguns without serial numbers, and that amount of money is enough to buy three guns."

David's expression then turned serious as he looked at Wayne and said:

"Since someone is trying to cause us trouble, we must respond with bullets!"

According to Wayne's plan, they will lure out Old Joe the Bottle after they are fully armed tomorrow.

Everything will eventually come to a conclusion.

After dividing the money and finishing their discussion, Mike and David, who had been busy all day, each found a corner, wrapped themselves in blankets, and went to sleep.

Wayne, with his dog Wick, strolled towards the other end of the alley, intending to search again and see if they could find anything new.

Walking past the various collapsed shops, Wayne returned to the pharmacy he had searched the night before.

However, this time the puppy Wick did not react at all.

Wayne rummaged through the drawers for a while, but apart from some trash, there was nothing of any use.

Just then, the dog Wick suddenly ran out of the pharmacy and rushed into a pile of construction debris diagonally opposite, where he started digging at a pile of sand and dirt, making low growling noises from time to time.

Wayne walked over curiously and saw a damaged nameplate:

George's Antique Shop

Below is a line of smaller print:

[Having served in the British army, he visited the beautiful summer palaces of the Eastern country and brought back treasures from them.]

Wayne narrowed his eyes, tossed the nameplate aside, and saw that the little dog Wick had already pulled a piece of blackened rag out of a pile of trash.

You have found the artifact, the core of which is needed to build the dungeon sanctuary.

Wayne's eyes lit up, and he immediately picked it up and unfolded it. He saw that the background color of the cloth was yellow, and there was a dragon embroidered on it.

In the center are four large characters embroidered in gold thread:
