I'm building Gundams in America

Chapter 32 The Flood of the Dark Nest

Wayne and his two companions returned to the shaft, opened the cover, and quickly climbed down the ladder.

A much denser layer of moisture, much thicker than before, was now hitting us.

The roar of water echoed in my ears, as if a giant dragon was roaring and winding its way through the earth.

The three of them slid almost straight down to the bottom, and then ran wildly back to their previous camp.

Mike's uncle Raymond, his dog Wick, and the dozen or so homeless men were all there.

Wayne ran while glancing at the sewer ditch beside him.

The water level has risen by 20 to 30 centimeters compared to before, and it is clearly still rising. It is only a dozen centimeters away from completely overflowing the ditch and flooding the high platform next to it.

The sound of the water had become much louder.

The main issue is that the originally calm water surface has now begun to show obvious progressive waves.

It is indeed releasing floodwater.

The people who released the floodwaters probably had no idea that so many people lived in the sewers.

Just like a gardener watering flowers in a garden who doesn't know that this will flood mouse holes and ant nests.

Or perhaps they know, but simply don't care.

After all, from the perspective of Western University society, homeless people can no longer be called human beings, and are not even as good as a stray dog.

Stray cats and dogs are rescued by animal protection organizations, but homeless people can only continue to live on the streets.

Fortunately, the shaft was not far from the camp, and Wayne and his two companions quickly reached the area.

The homeless people in the camp were already asleep, and many of them had happy smiles on their faces, as if they were having a sweet dream.

After witnessing the "miracle" shown by Wayne tonight, they believed they had encountered a saint and would surely be saved. A brilliant light shone through their dark lives, instantly putting them at ease.

As for the rumbling sound of sewage in the sewers, they had long been accustomed to it and regarded it as just white noise.

I'm actually finding it harder to sleep without that sound.

"Get up! Wake up, brother! A great flood is coming! We must get out of here immediately!"

"Wake up, you bunch of pigs! Get up and run for your lives!"

Mike and David rushed into the tent, shouting, and helped old Raymond out.

The two men's shouts also woke up a group of homeless people who were sleeping. Many of them rubbed their eyes and woke up from their mattresses or got out of their tents or sofas, looking at Mike and David with blank expressions.

Old Will, who had also been awakened by the noise, chuckled upon hearing their shouts and said:

"Don't worry, my brother. That's how it is in the sewers. Sometimes the water level in the drains increases, usually because the water flow is stronger to flush out the silt. Sometimes it happens when it rains too. It's okay, we're used to it."

The other homeless people present also smiled, and some of them even looked at Mike and David with a mocking expression.

"Our two brothers are staying here for the first time and don't quite understand what's going on, so it's nothing."

"Everyone, go back to sleep. We have work tomorrow."

"I was dreaming that I was in heaven, but I was woken up just as I reached the gates of heaven..."

"You'll get used to it. It's just the sound of water, nothing to worry about."

Just as everyone was about to fall asleep again, a deep voice said:

"No, this isn't just a normal increase in water flow; someone is releasing floodwater... Listen."

After Wayne finished speaking, he began to listen again.

His basic mental strength had reached 1.6, his sensory acuity had improved significantly, and his hearing was much more sensitive than that of an ordinary person.

He could hear something rushing through the sewers in the distance behind the sound of water, squeezing the walls and even the ceiling, as if a dragon were roaring!

That was the flood peak from the flood discharge!

Today's snowfall was heavy, but almost all of it melted, resulting in a much larger volume of water than usual.

The snow that was originally scattered on the streets of Seattle melted and flowed into the sewers, creating an extremely high instantaneous flow rate.

However, the others present did not possess Wayne's hearing and mental abilities; their long-term life on the streets and drug abuse had long since destroyed their spirits.

Old Will and the others listened for a long time but couldn't understand anything. They all looked at Wayne blankly, wondering what the Saint meant.

Wayne frowned.

We must leave immediately; we can't wait any longer!

He said at the moment:

"The flood is coming. Get out of here immediately, go back to the surface, and follow me."

As he spoke, he reached out to support old Raymond, and together with Mike, they helped old Raymond walk toward the shaft.

David was still packing up their tent when he said:

"We haven't packed our things yet."

Wayne quickly said:

"It's too late, leave immediately!"

"Oh, okay!" David hurriedly grabbed a few necessities like power banks and some clothes, put them in a plastic bag, and ran after Wayne and the others.

Seeing Wayne and his group leave, Old Will and the others looked at each other in bewilderment.

Old Will led the way, rushing towards the shaft.

After all, his life was saved by the saint, and he would follow the saint no matter what he did.

Seeing that old Will was leaving, the remaining dozen or so homeless men quickly followed.

The shock of witnessing the miracle tonight has not yet subsided, and they have no time to think.

In any case, the other party just wanted to take them back to the ground, and even if nothing happened, they could just come back to sleep.

Wayne and Mike helped Raymond ahead, while David had already climbed up the shaft, opened the cover, and waved to the two of them.

Old Raymond was in much better shape than before, and he pushed Wayne and Mike aside, saying:

"Thank you, kids, I can do it myself."

With antibiotics and hormones, his cold is basically cured, but he still needs to take insulin regularly for his diabetes.

Soon, everyone had climbed out of the shaft and emerged onto the surface.

Feeling the icy chill of the falling snowflakes, everyone shivered and stamped their feet. Some even had doubts, but dared not say anything for the time being.

Old Will helped a homeless woman who had fallen behind climb up the shaft, while he himself climbed to the very end of the ladder.

At this time, there were still five or six people on the ladder in the shaft.

Suddenly, Old Will and the others, who were climbing upwards, all turned to look upstream in the sewer ditch.

"What was that sound?"

Old Will said in astonishment.

An extremely terrifying sound was coming from the distance of the sewers, like an airplane flying underground.

It sounded like the roar of a monster like Godzilla.

Then, everyone witnessed a scene they would never forget.

A surge of water, filling the entire sewer channel, came from afar, so large that it almost filled the channel, which was several meters high.

There were no more ditches, because the entire channel had been completely filled with water.

At the very forefront of this wave were various kinds of debris and garbage being swept up.

Tents, mattresses, sofas, tables and chairs, cola bottles, plastic waste, and so on.

A faint glow of fireflies flickered amidst the rising tide.

Old Will's eyes widened as he suddenly realized what it was.

There were several laptops with their screens still lit up, some suits wrapped in plastic bags, and a few figures struggling futilely in the floodwaters.

It's those programmers!
