I'm building Gundams in America
Chapter 151 Even the Devil Can Be Devout
The church at the South District Gospel Witness Church is a small community chapel.
It can only accommodate a little over two hundred people in total.
It was almost completely full at this point.
Looking at the crowd before him, a pastor should feel joy, after all, he is able to better spread the glory of God.
At this moment, however, Pastor Martin felt a chilling bitterness.
He usually preaches during Sunday classes, and the church is usually only about half full.
Now, the other party has simply clapped their hands, and the entire church is completely full. Who will be in charge here from now on?
Seemingly sensing his doubt, the black-haired, black-eyed Wayne spoke slowly and gently:
"Martin, is this little chapel all you care about? A chapel that can only hold 200 to 300 people? Is that all you have?"
"The Lakewood Church in Houston can hold 16,800 people in its main hall; the Second Baptist Church can hold 10,000; the Prestonwood Baptist Church in Texas can hold 7,000; and even the Highland Church in Birmingham, Alabama, can hold 5,000 people!"
"Compared to these magnificent and sacred structures, the Church of the Witness, where we are now, is like a leaf on a tree. Would you give up the forest for a leaf?"
Looking at the devout gazes of the people in the church, Martin understood that what the other person said was not entirely wishful thinking.
Considering the rumors circulating on the streets, he had no doubt about the ability of the dark-haired, dark-eyed man before him to charm others.
And the evangelicals are never short of charlatans.
With enough performance and charm, one can amass thousands of followers and become a guest of honor of the president.
For example, Paula White, the White House Office of Faith Director.
(You can search for videos of Paula White performing rituals, such as blowing into a microphone to create sound effects for exorcism.)
Martin had no doubt at this moment that Wayne and Paula White were the same kind of people.
He himself had met Paula in person at a prayer meeting in support of the president by evangelicals.
Even though he could only see her from afar, he could feel the indescribable religious fanaticism emanating from her, as if God himself were holding a stick behind her and pressing it against her.
If Wayne can also ignite this kind of frenzy, then perhaps he can ride that wave and rise higher and higher like a surfer...
Even if it doesn't work out, what loss would he suffer?
After all, the other party did indeed provide a donation...
Martin, his mind racing, struggled to convince himself and said to Wayne:
"Wayne... sir, I really don't know... what I can do for you..."
There is never a one-sided effort.
If Wayne doesn't make any demands, he'll become uneasy and even lose sleep.
They even suspected that the other party was planning some kind of terrorist attack on his church.
It should be noted that when Christian fundamentalism launches terrorist attacks, it is in no way inferior to other religions, and sometimes it is even more ruthless.
Seeing that Wayne still hadn't said anything, Martin gritted his teeth and quickly spoke up:
"Mr. Wayne, I think that as a highly respected person, you should become an elder of the church... I will recommend you to the church's elders, and the rest is up to the elders..."
First, deeply bind the other party to the church, then talk about other things.
If there's anything wrong, he, as a pastor hired by the church, can simply switch to another church.
Wayne said calmly:
"I originally only wanted to become a deacon in the church, but since Pastor Martin has been so kind as to offer his services, then so be it."
"In addition, there is another matter that requires the church's intervention."
As he spoke, Wayne beckoned, and a haggard-looking couple stepped out from the crowd and came to Wayne's side. It was Rhodes and Karina.
Although Karina did not sell her body on Aurora Street at the last moment because Rhodes' monthly salary of five thousand dollars provided her with a stable life, she still looked extremely haggard.
That was the heartbreak expressed by a mother whose child had been taken away.
She missed her child terribly.
Wayne, with a solemn expression, introduced himself to Pastor Martin:
"This is my medium assistant Rod and his wife Karina. They are both devout and good people who used to live in the White River community."
"The flood destroyed everything—their homes, their jobs, even their children were taken away by child protection services."
As she spoke, two streams of tears flowed down Karina's face, and she murmured:
"Thank you... Mr. Wayne... Thank you... If it weren't for your rescue, I might already... I might already..."
Just as she was wandering aimlessly down Aurora Street, prepared to sell her body at any cost to earn money and get her child back, her husband Rod suddenly found her.
Rod told her that Mr. Wayne had promised him a job as a medium's assistant with a monthly salary of $5000, and that Mr. Wayne had promised to help them get their child back.
In that instant, Karina felt as if she had seen a ray of light shining down from heaven, pulling her out of the hell of despair.
Wayne continued:
"Right now, the two poor children, Arthur and Hannah, are still in foster care. I need a letter of introduction from the church to prove Rod and Karina's character, so that those scumbags in the child protection department can feel at ease handing the children back."
Martin instantly breathed a sigh of relief.
Since the other party had something to ask for, it actually gave him more confidence.
The most terrifying are the saints who seem to have no desires or wants.
Just like a president who comes to power in the name of saving America.
Those people will take everything away.
"Of course, sir. Rod and Karina are already members of our Church of the Testimony of the Gospel. I will write them letters of introduction now."
Pastor Martin spoke quickly, took out a piece of paper and a pen, found a place to sit down, and began to write furiously.
The head pastor of a church, having only just met Wayne, listened to him completely and even wrote a detailed letter of introduction for them.
This scene, as seen by Karina, was nothing short of a miracle, leaving her deeply moved.
What shocked her even more was that all of Mr. Wayne's followers present seemed to take it all for granted.
It was as if it would be a true act of treason if Pastor Martin didn't write the letter of introduction.
There was a vague feeling that Karina was under the protection of some important figure, rather than an ordinary street psychic.
While she was lost in thought, Pastor Martin had already written the letter of introduction and handed it to them.
Karina gratefully accepted the gift, knowing that she should be able to get her child back now.
Wayne said calmly:
"Martin, my friend, thank you for your friendship."
As he spoke, he got up to leave.
The men and women from the Saints' Gang inside the church also got up and left.
Pastor Martin quickly said:
"Thank you for your generosity, sir... Furthermore, sir, as an independent church, we have many elders in our council who, like you, possess noble character and high social standing..."
"Occasionally, the church will hold charity auctions or similar events to raise funds for those who suffer in this world and spread God's love..."
"Tonight happens to be a charity cocktail party and a small auction, held at the Hyatt Hotel. We hope you can grace us with your presence..."
"After all, if we want to recommend you to the council of elders, we need to make sure that the other elders in the council know you. I think this is a good opportunity."
Wayne nodded slightly and said:
"Okay, Martin, my friend, I'll participate."
As he spoke, he got up, left his seat, and walked out of the church.
As he left, the devout crowd stood as if in deep meditation, like statues, heads bowed in prayer, as if facing a true saint.
Only after Wayne's figure completely disappeared from the church entrance did these people seem to come alive and begin to leave one after another.
This scene sent chills down the spine of Pastor Martin, while also filling him with a faint sense of envy.
What would it feel like if his followers respected him as much as those people respected Wayne?
Good heavens, almost every shepherd craves that kind of respect!
That's the respect a true shepherd deserves, not like this pastor whose congregation even falls asleep during his sermons.
Just then, the church deacon Anthony returned to him.
Watching those departing figures, Anthony asked with lingering fear:
"Pastor Martin, do we... really want to let those people join the church? And let Wayne join the council of elders?"
"I once heard Pastor George from the Harvest Festival Church say that this Wayne is a complete heretic... Nobody knows what his true intentions are..."
"Shut up!" Martin yelled, putting away the ten thousand dollars.
"Deacon Anthony, do you intend to question God's authority in the church? With God behind us, even the devil will have faith!"
It's all for faith.
It's definitely not for ten thousand dollars.
