Warhammer: Open the door! Human League players!
Chapter 28: We've struck gold!
Thump, thump, thump! Bruce's power pick struck the rock in front of him, and the sound was off.
"Is there a cavity in front?"
"Captain, this seems to be a cavity too." The speaker was Bruce's only miner, named Yedi.
"There shouldn't be a cavity here, right?"
Although they encountered cavities during their excavation, most of them were formed by overlapping broken and fragmented rock slabs, so when they did encounter them, there were obvious fractured layers.
But not here.
The miners seemed to have thought of something.
"Captain, it might be a miners' tunnel!"
"It's the tunnel wall!"
Beneath the rock was a layer of cement, a cement wall with obvious tear marks.
Just then, the earth shook again.
"Again?"
Whether you're a player or a miner, you've almost become accustomed to geological movements.
This time, however, there's an added element of uncertainty.
With a deafening roar, the rock wall in front of them collapsed.
Ahead lay a vast, hollow area, with only faint firelight emanating from within.
The presence of firelight means there are living creatures inside.
Rock worms, and...
"wrong!"
Orcs!
Those green-skinned orcs.
They were frolicking and playing in the area, some of the orcs even riding rock worms, looking very happy.
Holy crap!
The commotion caused by the collapse of the rock wall had already attracted the attention of the Greenskins.
The green-skinned orc who spotted Bruce and his group was taken aback for a moment, but his eyes immediately lit up with excitement.
"wrong!"
WAAAAGH!
The roars echoed throughout the cavern, and the orcs grabbed their rough and powerful weapons and surrounded the mine where Bruce was.
"Fire!"
Bruce roared.
The orcs charged forward with wild roars, some of the stronger orcs grabbing the smaller goblins next to them and hurling them violently toward the tunnel entrance where Bruce was.
Bruce casually drew his pistol from his waist and shot the flying goblin in the head.
boom!
Green blood splattered in the air.
Bruce is a prodigy, a master of singles and triples, and his marksmanship is almost instinctive.
"Give me the rifle!" Bruce yelled.
The clone soldier next to him immediately handed him a rifle.
In this situation, a pickaxe is useless; you need firepower to suppress it.
Bruce roared, "Everyone open fire! Don't let them get any closer!"
Upon hearing the order, the clone soldier immediately raised his gun and fired, his movements swift and decisive.
Bruce tossed the pistol to the miner, who froze in fear, trembling as if he had wet himself.
He was just a miner, a cowardly and terrified miner, who could do nothing but be a chore.
The terror of the orcs was still etched in his mind.
This fear was ingrained in his instincts.
He even worried about his own fate, whether he would become the next cannon fodder.
Too many miners were sent out as cannon fodder.
At Bruce's roar, he hurriedly grabbed his weapon, but his hands were trembling. He was just a lowly miner and had no fighting ability whatsoever.
Amidst a hail of bullets, the orcs charged forward like a tidal wave, their numbers so overwhelming it was despair-inducing.
Bruce knew perfectly well that they couldn't hold out.
With only three or four men, three rifles and a pistol, the miners could hardly be considered warriors. They were no match for the densely packed orc army in front of them, and even relying on the advantageous terrain of the newly dug tunnel entrance was of no use.
"Damn it, reload... No, I'm out of bullets, I'm doomed."
Bruce instantly assessed the situation and made a decision immediately.
"You take him and get out of here, I'll cover you." His tone was incredibly firm.
Cloned soldiers are cold, lifeless tools of war, capable only of unconditionally following orders.
But the miner was different. He was a subordinate that Bruce recruited later, with nearly a decade of real life experience. Under the cruel rule of the empire, he was nothing more than a low-level consumable that could be discarded at will.
The only way to survive is to keep mining. The empire doesn't care whether he lives or dies. He and the mine he mines are essentially no different!
The miners were also afraid, partly because they feared they would be cannon fodder, bait, the last line of defense during the evacuation, or even human bombs.
Bruce's words stunned him on the spot.
Bruce is the commander of the Human Alliance squad, holding his and the clones' lives in his hands. In this desperate situation, how could he let him and two clones retreat first?
Shouldn't he, the miner, be the one to cover the rear?
He was a high-ranking officer, while I was just a lowly miner. How could that be?
The miner was completely stunned, standing there dumbfounded. He had originally thought that he would be the first one to be pushed out as cannon fodder.
This moment of hesitation caused Bruce to lose his patience.
He didn't have time to guess what the miner was thinking; he only understood one thing: with the miner dead, he had lost an important subordinate.
He is a clone carrying the players' consciousness, capable of resurrecting after death, with a total of ten lives. Although this is shared by all 30 players, what about the miners? Can the miners come back after they die?
Judging from the realism of this game, it's highly likely that the characters actually died.
Bruce made a decision in a split second, ordering sharply, "Take him away and retreat immediately!"
"Give me the grenade!"
Bruce ripped off the pins on his grenades, throwing one into the horde of beasts and the other into the tunnel where the clones and miners had retreated.
"Captain!" the miner shouted in disbelief.
What is the captain doing?
Bruce watched the miners being led away and smiled with satisfaction.
"Survive!"
That smile was like a carving knife, etched into his heart.
A violent explosion erupted, instantly tearing apart the charging orc formation. Several orcs who got close were killed instantly, but the bloodshed only excited the orcs more.
They were completely fearless of death and quickly charged forward again, roaring. He only had a few grenades left, and with that little firepower, he could only buy them a few seconds at most.
With a deafening roar, the miners watched helplessly as the tunnel between them and their team leader collapsed.
"Team, Captain..."
In his most desperate and fearful moments, when he was abandoned as expendable resources, he encountered the Commander, who was imprisoned in a cage-like chair. Then he met the Captain, who had been incredibly kind to him, but whose captain died for him.
Both of his hopes fell.
"Aa ...
It let out a heart-wrenching cry, desperately trying to break free from the clone's arms.
But the clone, who had already accepted the captain's orders, remained unmoved. The immense force restrained his arms, rendering him unable to move.
"team leader!!!!"
All he could do was cry out in vain.
Bruce stared at the endless stream of orcs, gritting his teeth and growling, "Damn it, we've really lost big this time, fuck!"
He was preparing to notify the other players of the situation through his headset.
But the next second, a huge black shadow instantly enveloped him completely.
boom!
His vision sank completely into darkness, and his life came to an end.
[Game Announcement: Player Bruce has died.]
The remaining 29 players were stunned when they heard the announcement.
What's going on?
The viewers in the live stream were completely dumbfounded.
"Is there an Easter egg?"
"Holy crap, Bruce dug right into a monster's lair? That's so unlucky! He's lost a life just like that."
"They even let the cloners and miners evacuate first, that's really generous of them."
"Once he's all dead, he'll be a commander without an army."
"That miner looked so touched..."
Bruce already had the fewest men left; if another one died, there would only be two left. Who wouldn't feel heartbroken? Sacrificing himself was the most worthwhile option.
He was still engrossed in mining, drooling, completely unaware of the upheaval happening on the other side. He only noticed a strong geological disturbance and clearly sensed that there seemed to be a cavity hidden in the area ahead, the reason for which was unclear, yet it was unusually obvious.
"How did Bruce die? What happened? Did the geological movement just now cause the tunnel to collapse and bury him?"
"Everyone, come back quick! Something's happened! I've struck gold! An orc army! I'm fucking dead!"
"Watfa?"
