The Life of a Son-in-Law in a Courtyard House
Chapter 148 First Visit to the Black Market
After leaving Grandpa Wang's house, Yang Dalin put the things into his spatial storage.
In the afternoon, Yang Dalin first went to the home of another rescued child, Brother Zhang Kangri from the military region.
This house is the closest to Grandpa Wang's house, but it's also the furthest from Yang Dalin's house. Yang Dalin's visits were still following the planned route; otherwise, visiting all seven houses in one day would have taken too long.
Zhang Kangri lived in the military family quarters, where security was quite tight.
According to the address given by Brother Zhang Kangri, Yang Dalin waited outside the guardhouse at the entrance of the family compound and had the guard notify Zhang Kangri. When Zhang Kangri arrived, his belongings were inspected.
They were only allowed to enter after registering.
Once inside, Yang Dalin could only push the cart and walk with Zhang Kangri.
Zhang Kangri complained to him, "You come all this way, but why bring anything? You're a benefactor to our children, take them with you later."
Yang Dalin smiled and said, "Brother Zhang, this is your first time here. Let me familiarize myself with the place. Next time, you don't need to show me around, okay?"
Zhang Kangri was a straightforward man: "Alright, come to my house first. Where did you have drinks for lunch?"
Yang Dalin said, "At Grandpa Wang's house, they wouldn't let us leave without eating, so I had no choice but to have a drink with Grandpa Wang's son."
He wasn't feeling well, so he only had one drink.
Zhang Kangri naturally knew the reason and sighed, "Yes, we all came from the war years. Many of the old commanders are not in good health. I was young then and was always on the front line. I could eat more if I could get the best food."
They're actually much better than those old leaders.
Yang Dalin gave Zhang Kangri a thumbs up and said, "Brother Zhang, you are all great heroes, you are all amazing."
Zhang Kangri humbly said, "What are we compared to those who truly sacrificed themselves?"
I was lucky to survive; I've brushed with death so many times, and I still have several shrapnel fragments stuck in my body.
Yang Dalin observed his gait but didn't notice anything unusual, unaware that he still had a lot of shrapnel in his body.
Yang Dalin couldn't help but admire these amazing people.
They truly built a new nation with their own flesh and blood.
Yang Dalin asked him, "Brother Zhang, why don't you go to the hospital for surgery to remove it now?"
Zhang Kangri told him, "The doctor said that some things should not be done for the time being. One reason is that the surgical technique is not yet good enough, and they are afraid of rupturing other blood vessels. We can only wait until the medical skills are more advanced."
Another issue is that some parts have already grown into the flesh; if the technique isn't good enough, moving them might cause further problems.
Yang Dalin had to admit that these people deserved his respect.
I walked with Zhang Kangri to the family quarters and met Zhang Kangri's wife and children.
These are rows of bungalows, divided into several households, each with a small courtyard in front of its door.
The courtyard is small, only a few dozen square meters.
When they arrived near the family quarters, someone greeted Zhang Kangri, addressing him as Deputy Regiment Commander Zhang.
Unexpectedly, Brother Zhang holds a rather high-ranking official position.
Upon entering Zhang Kangri's house, Yang Dalin, just like with the previous families, first greeted Zhang Kangri's son and played with him for a while.
Hand the apple to Aunt Zhang and ask her to wash it for the child.
Zhang Kangri said, "You've already had a drink at Uncle Wang's place, why don't you have one with me too?"
Yang Dalin politely declined, saying, "Brother Zhang, it's not possible today. There are still a few places we haven't visited yet. We can't drink anymore, or we won't be able to go."
Next time I'll come to your place first, call you beforehand, and then we'll have a drink, okay?
Seeing that he really couldn't drink anymore, Zhang Kangri nodded and said, "Alright, I'll let you off today. You can drink next time."
Yang Dalin sat at Zhang Kangri's house for a while before taking his leave.
Before leaving, Zhang Kangri's son gave Yang Dalin a small boat made from a bullet casing as a gift.
Zhang Kangri also gave him two bottles of wine, and Zhang's wife also gave him some gifts.
Yang Dalin had no choice but to accept it, and only after Zhang Kangri saw him to the door did he ride away on his bicycle.
In the afternoon, we visited two other places, and finally, we went to Grandpa Gong's house.
Grandpa Gong is quite busy and isn't home.
Grandpa Gong's wife, Qi Desheng's mother-in-law, received Yang Dalin.
Of course, Yang Dalin wanted to leave but couldn't, as he had to wait for Grandpa Gong to come back and have dinner with him that evening.
So when I left Grandpa Gong's house that evening, it was already past eight o'clock.
Yang Dalin went straight to the freight station dormitory to sleep.
At midnight, Yang Dalin quietly left the dormitory.
He was the only one in his dorm today, and he left quietly without anyone noticing.
When Yang Dalin left through the main gate, he climbed out from another spot.
Having worked here for a while, it's easy to avoid the security department and escape.
It took Yang Dalin more than 20 minutes to walk to a black market that evening.
The black market is huge; you don't have to pay to buy anything inside.
You only need money when you sell things.
Many people were wearing hats and masks, and Yang Dalin was dressed similarly to them.
The coat was also worn without any markings or labels.
Others were carrying flashlights with some of the light blocked by cloth.
Only Yang Dalin doesn't need to use anything.
Follow others around.
As expected of a black market, it sells all sorts of things, you name it.
Yang Dalin found many antiques for sale. He had never dealt with these things in his previous life, and he didn't know if they were genuine or not, so he didn't buy any.
I happened to see two nice pieces of jade, so I sold them for grain.
The other party originally intended to exchange it for grain, but they wouldn't sell it even if offered money.
However, Yang Dalin found the two pieces to be exquisitely designed and felt nice to the touch, so he found a dark place, took out some food from his spatial storage, and traded them with the other party.
I didn't expect the purchasing power for refined grains to be so strong.
Yang Dalin thought to himself that these two pieces of jade, even if he didn't dare say they would be worth tens of millions, should be worth several million.
As a result, they exchanged it for ten catties of wheat flour.
It's incredibly cheap.
Yang Dalin had plenty of time and strolled around at a leisurely pace.
I came across a few small bottles that looked quite exquisite, but I didn't know anything about them; I just bought them because they were pretty.
They accepted it too.
Finally, he came across a secluded stall with two wooden guns in front of him.
Yang Dalin knew that he might have found the place.
He squatted down, picked up the wooden gun, and played with it, lowering his voice to say, "Do you have any real ones? I'll buy two, one long and one short."
The other person's face was covered, so their appearance couldn't be seen. They said in a low voice, "Yes, what kind do you want? We just want goldfish, we don't need money. Food will also work if you have it."
Yang Dalin happened to have gold bars in his spatial storage.
Keeping it to preserve its value is pointless; you might as well get two more guns for better self-defense.
He plans to buy an M1 Garand rifle, and also a Mauser C96 or a Colt 1911A1, which he has registered with the branch office.
In many situations, it may not be effective.
There are quite a few Garands in China; they were all captured from the Americans and Japanese. These things are very powerful, and we like them too.
For example, the Type 56 semi-automatic rifle that just came out in China may not be available on the black market, and even if it is, I really wouldn't dare to sell it to a stranger.
After all, it's a domestically produced copy of a standard-issue rifle; if anything happens, the investigation will be very thorough.
So Yang Dalin thought about it and decided to buy a Garand, or at least get a 98K from its country of origin.
That thing is highly accurate; if you have good eyesight, you can even use it as a sniper rifle.
Yang Dalin put down the wooden gun he was holding and told the other party, "Okay, I'll trade you a goldfish. How do you want to trade?"
