Anti-Japanese War Espionage: I Have an Omniscient Perspective
Chapter 9: The Infiltration Operation, Team Leader Fang Dongcheng
A hint of approval flashed in Director Wen's eyes, but he didn't say anything more and turned to continue his inspection.
Lin Rui stood there, his heart filled with turmoil.
He could sense that in Director Wen's gaze, besides scrutiny, there was also a sense of consideration.
After the inspection, Director Wen had a private conversation with Deputy Director Yu in his office.
Lin Rui stood by the playground and activated his supernatural ability to investigate the situation inside the office.
"Deputy Director Yu, this group of people has great courage, but they lack the necessary foundation and are not yet ready to be relied upon."
"Director Wen, they've only just started training. It's too early for them to meet your requirements."
"But I've taken a liking to someone, and I wonder if Deputy Director Yu would be willing to part with her?"
"Who?"
"Lin Rui".
"he?"
Deputy Director Yu hesitated.
After a moment, he replied, "I rescued him from the military court because I saw he was a talented person. It would be a waste to keep him at the school. Fine, why not let him go to you?"
Director Wen smiled and said, "Alright, I'll have someone go and call him over."
Lin Rui deactivated his superpowers and returned to the vehicle management office.
About half an hour later, Su Manqing hurriedly found Lin Rui, her expression slightly serious: "Lin Rui, Director Wen and Deputy Director Yu want you to come over."
Lin Rui straightened his military uniform and strode towards the office building.
Inside the office, Director Wen sat on the sofa, a cigarette between his fingers. Amidst the swirling smoke, his expression was even more serious than before.
Upon seeing Lin Rui enter, Deputy Director Yu gestured for him to stand in front of him.
"Lin Rui," Director Wen began, his voice low, "the current situation in the Battle of Shanghai is critical, with the Japanese army pressing forward step by step. Shanghai may be in trouble. Mr. Dai has ordered the establishment of multiple secret intelligence stations in and around Shanghai, and the deployment of a group of reliable personnel. If Shanghai falls to the Japanese, these people will be responsible for gathering information on Japanese movements, transmitting intelligence, and cooperating in carrying out operations behind enemy lines."
The information Lin Rui had overheard using his supernatural abilities was not detailed, but upon hearing Director Wen's account, he was shocked and instantly understood.
Director Wen is trying to recruit him into the undercover operation.
He forced himself to calm down and listened attentively.
Director Wen continued, "Deputy Director Yu has told me all about your situation. You come from the Central Army's armored forces, have combat experience, drive well, and have even taught yourself various combat techniques. What's more, you're calm, reserved, and don't attract attention—qualities perfectly suited for undercover work."
He leaned forward, his gaze fixed on Lin Rui: "I know you disobeyed military orders, but Deputy Director Yu got you released because you're a patriot. Now, an even more arduous task lies before you. Are you willing to pledge your loyalty to the Party and the country, dedicate yourself to secret intelligence work, and become a hidden pawn lurking right under the enemy's nose?"
The office was silent except for the shouts of the trainees outside the window.
Lin Rui's heart was pounding wildly.
Loyalty to the party and the country was of course impossible for him, but he was willing to contribute to the resistance against Japan.
Who knows, if I were to come into contact with the underground Communist Party in the future, I might become another Yu Zecheng.
More importantly, his abilities are better suited for espionage, since such operations behind enemy lines require a high degree of vigilance and understanding of the environment, and his abilities are a perfect fit.
After thinking for a moment, he replied loudly, "Director Wen, I understand the dangers and responsibilities of undercover work. With the nation in peril, as long as it contributes to the resistance against Japan and to saving our country, as long as it helps our suffering compatriots, I am willing to obey orders and go through fire and water without hesitation!"
A hint of satisfaction flashed in Director Wen's eyes. He slowly stood up and patted Lin Rui on the shoulder: "Good! You have ambition! For now, you will remain at the school and use this time to learn some intelligence transmission, secret writing, disguise, and emergency escape techniques from the instructors. Once your secret identity and assigned action group are determined, someone will contact you."
"Yes." Lin Rui saluted solemnly.
"Go down and wait for further instructions." Director Wen waved his hand and sat back down on the sofa.
........
In mid-September, the situation in Shanghai changed drastically, with bad news coming in like a tidal wave.
The Japanese army broke through the western position of the Songhu defense line and advanced directly towards the Nanxiang and Jiading line, creating a tense atmosphere in Qingpu City.
The training and teaching at Xixi Primary School are becoming increasingly intense.
Lin Rui, who was granted special permission, also studied some specialized training in intelligence transmission, secret writing, disguise, and emergency escape during the instructors' spare time.
He also learned gang slang and close-quarters combat techniques from the Green Gang.
Until February 9th.
A black sedan drove into the school, and a man wearing glasses got out of the car.
Subsequently, Lin Rui, along with two other trainees, were summoned.
The bespectacled man said coldly, "Your infiltration mission is now activated. Follow me."
Having studied the ethics of espionage, Lin Rui and his two companions didn't ask any questions and got into the car directly.
The car drove out of the school and headed into the city.
Half an hour later, the car entered the entrance to the French Concession.
The former French Concession is now guarded by the Concession Police, and entry requires a pass.
After the bespectacled man presented four passes for inspection, the car was allowed to enter.
The car then drove to the intersection of Lafayette Road and Maple Bridge, where there was a courtyard with a sign that read "Tripolar Radio Training Center" hanging at the entrance.
The term "training center" means school; this was a radio technology training school during the Republic of China era.
The gatekeeper opened the gate, the car drove in, and the scene inside changed drastically.
There were no students, but rather men dressed in Zhongshan suits and Western suits.
The bespectacled man spoke up: "This is the Shanghai office of the Fuxing Society's Special Service Department, and also the headquarters of the Jiangsu-Zhejiang Action Committee. Get out of the car and follow me."
Lin Rui and the other two got out of the car and followed the bespectacled man to a house at the back, to the second room on the left on the second floor.
The bespectacled man pointed to the chairs in the room: "You sit and wait, someone will come to call you in a bit."
He finished speaking and then closed the door and left.
The two Qingpu students panicked and looked at Lin Rui.
One of them asked, "Brother Lin, what's going on?"
Lin Rui sat down and said frankly, "Let's sit and wait for a while."
The two students exchanged a glance, said nothing, and each found a place to sit down and wait.
After a while, the door was pushed open from the outside, and the bespectacled man looked at the three of them.
"Lin Rui, come with me."
Lin Rui got up and followed the bespectacled man into the next room.
Someone was already waiting for him there; it was a kind-looking middle-aged man in a long robe.
"I've brought the person over to you. You can decide what to do with them yourself." After saying that, the bespectacled man closed the door and left.
The middle-aged man smiled and walked up to Lin Rui, extending his hand: "Hello, I am Fang Dongcheng, the leader of your undercover team. I will arrange an identity for you and arrange for you to meet with the other undercover agents. Let's go, let's leave this place."
Lin Rui didn't move: "I'm afraid this outfit isn't appropriate for going out."
Fang Dongcheng slapped his forehead: "Oh right, how could I forget that?" He picked up a bundle from the ground by the wall and handed it to Lin Rui: "These are clothes prepared for you. Wear them before you go."
