Anti-Japanese War Espionage: I Have an Omniscient Perspective
Chapter 4 A Turning Point: From Soldier to Driver
The cold iron handcuffs chafed my wrists, causing a painful irritation to my skin.
Lin Rui was taken by military police to a temporary military court cell on the south bank of the Suzhou Creek.
This place was originally the basement of a foreign firm, dark and damp.
In the next cell, there were several soldiers who had violated discipline; some were dejected, and others were cursing under their breath.
Lin Rui stood against the wall, pondering how to break the deadlock.
Soon after, two military law officers interrogated him.
The interrogation room contained only a wooden table and three chairs. Files were spread out on the table. The leading officer, his face stern, tapped on a file and asked, "Lin Rui, on August 29th, on the Henan-North Road battlefield, did you disobey the infantry company commander's orders and drive your tank away from the position without authorization?"
"I didn't disengage from the battle; I just moved to a different position." Lin Rui raised his eyes, his tone firm. "At that time, the Japanese had already set up Type 92 infantry guns and locked onto the original position of my tanks. If we had held our ground, the tanks would have been destroyed, and the infantry company behind us would have lost its only fire support. After I moved to the ruins to hide, I destroyed one Japanese infantry gun and two machine gun positions, routed a Japanese squad, and saved the entire infantry company."
"That's sophistry!" The officer slammed his fist on the table. "Battlefield orders are absolute. The infantry officer's orders are the highest orders at the front. Your unauthorized actions constitute disobedience! As for your so-called merits, the infantry company officer's report didn't mention your contributions at all; it only stated that you disobeyed orders and deserted!"
Lin Rui's heart sank; it was indeed that officer deliberately smearing him.
He tried to argue, but the officer interrupted him: "The evidence is conclusive. If you confess, you may be given a lighter sentence and sent to a labor camp; if you insist on resisting, you will be dealt with according to military law!"
"I am innocent." Lin Rui closed his eyes and said no more.
He knew that if he confessed, he would ruin himself, while not confessing would give him a chance to turn things around.
Seeing this, the officer was so angry that he turned and left, leaving behind the words "Lock him up" before hastily departing.
Lin Rui was taken back to his cell, where soldiers cast sympathetic glances his way, but he remained oblivious.
He activated his three-dimensional perspective and was observing the surrounding environment.
It seems that the range of the superpower is much smaller after leaving the tank, and it can only cover a radius of 100 meters around it.
He saw a group of people in the largest office of the building above him.
Judging from their attire and demeanor, one of them should be the head of the military law department.
Within this range, sounds could actually be heard.
The head of the military law department said respectfully, "Mr. Dai, Deputy Director Yu, please come in. The conditions here are simple, I'm sorry to trouble you."
The man in the lead, dressed in a dark Zhongshan suit and with a thin face, was the one referred to as "Mr. Dai." The man in military uniform standing next to him was Deputy Director Yu, and the person following behind was probably their attendant.
"Director, we are here on the orders of the Chairman to establish the 'Jiangsu-Zhejiang Action Committee Special Operations Team,' which is responsible for infiltrating behind enemy lines, disrupting Japanese supply lines, and gathering intelligence." Mr. Dai's voice was not loud, but it carried an unquestionable authority. "The Special Operations Team urgently needs manpower, especially those with combat experience. The military police in your Military Law Department are all skilled fighters, so we have come to borrow a group of good military police officers from you."
The section chief quickly replied, "Mr. Dai, rest assured, I will select the most capable military police and assign them to the special operations team immediately. However, the situation at the front is critical, and the number of military police is also quite tight. Twenty people are the limit."
"That's enough. Hand the person over directly to Deputy Director Yu; he'll handle the details." Mr. Dai paused. "What kind of people are locked up in the military law department's jail?"
"Most of them are those who violate military discipline and retreat in the face of battle, and there is also a stubborn fellow who disobeys orders."
"Disobeying orders? Tell me about it," Deputy Director Yu asked.
The section chief dared not conceal anything and had no choice but to hand over the file: "Here, this is the file. The infantry company officer reported that he deserted his post without authorization. However..." He hesitated for a moment and added, "According to his soldiers, Japanese infantry guns were indeed destroyed on the Henan North Road at that time, but the report did not mention that he was responsible."
After reviewing the case file, Deputy Director Yu said, "I've been in the military for over ten years and have witnessed many dirty deeds. This kid has definitely been wronged. He's a promising talent, though. Perfect, he can drive a tank, so he can drive a car too. I need a driver. Could you let him join the 'Jiangsu-Zhejiang Action Committee Special Operations Team'?"
The head of the military law department nodded: "That's possible, but..."
Mr. Dai said, "Let's go see the person first."
The three of them then stood up.
Lin Rui quickly deactivated his supernatural abilities and waited for someone to arrive.
After a while, the group entered the basement and headed straight for Lin Rui's cell. The head of the military law department raised his hand to signal the military police to open the cell door.
"You're Lin Rui?" Mr. Dai stared into Lin Rui's eyes, his tone indifferent.
Lin Rui looked up, met his sharp gaze, and replied neither humbly nor arrogantly, "Yes."
"Why disobey orders?"
Lin Rui recounted the events of that day in detail, from the threat posed by the Japanese machine gun positions to the discovery of the Type 92 infantry gun, and then to the relocation of positions and the destruction of enemy equipment—he told the whole story without missing a single word.
Finally, he added, "I'm not disobeying orders, I just don't want to make unnecessary sacrifices, and I don't want to watch my brothers behind me die in vain. Tanks are for fighting, not for being stationary targets."
After listening, Mr. Dai didn't seem to agree or disagree, but instead looked at Deputy Director Yu. "What do you think of this young man?"
"It seems alright, it's usable," Deputy Director Yu replied.
Mr. Dai then turned to the section chief and said, "Military law is rigid, but people are flexible. Although he violated military law, he saved a company and destroyed Japanese heavy equipment, so he can be considered a meritorious official. That's settled then, transfer him to the special operations team."
"Yes, yes..." The head of the military law department nodded repeatedly in response. If Mr. Dai said yes, then it was no big deal. Nothing else mattered.
The section chief then announced, "Your case is now closed, but you will be placed under the command of the special operations team. Are you willing?"
In the current situation, getting out of there is all that matters, not to mention that Lin Rui has already vaguely guessed about Mr. Dai and the action team.
Lin Rui replied, "I'm willing."
The military law officers unlocked Lin Rui's handcuffs, and he consciously followed behind Dai and Yu.
At that moment, Mr. Dai's attendant whispered in his ear, "Director, it's time to return to Nanjing."
Mr. Dai nodded: "I'm busy with official business and have to return to Nanjing immediately. You can decide the rest yourselves."
After saying this, he left with his entourage.
Deputy Director Yu and the head of the military law department saw him off at the door, and Lin Rui tactfully followed behind Deputy Director Yu.
His actions pleased Deputy Director Yu, who then spoke with him.
"We need to form a special operations team to infiltrate behind enemy lines, engage the Japanese, disrupt their supplies, and take down their strongholds. We're short-handed right now and need to recruit from various sources. You'll be my driver for now and accompany me on my mission."
"Yes." Lin Rui stood up straight and replied loudly.
"Okay." Deputy Director Yu turned to the head of the Military Law Department and said, "Then I'll head back to Qingpu first. Thank you for your help with the 20 military police officers."
"There, there." The head of the military law department smiled as he saw Deputy Director Yu off.
After leaving the military law office, Deputy Director Yu led Lin Rui to a black Studebaker sedan parked by the roadside.
Have you ever driven this kind of car?
"I have driven one. I drove one for my superior when I was in the tank unit," Lin Rui replied, following the memories of this body.
"Then you drive this car." Deputy Director Yu tossed the keys to Lin Rui.
Lin Rui reached out and took the keys, opened the car door, and sat in the driver's seat.
This Stipunk sedan is quite high-end and has an electric start system. To start it, plug the key into the socket on the right side of the steering wheel, turn the steering wheel to the ignition position, pause for 2 seconds to allow the ignition coil to charge, then turn it to the "start" position while simultaneously pressing the clutch pedal all the way down.
The engine roared, and Lin Rui immediately released the key.
You can't drive right away at this time; you need to warm up the car for 1-2 minutes.
Seeing Lin Rui's performance, Deputy Director Yu nodded, opened the back door, and got in.
"Go to Qingpu County."
