Lord: My Shop Connects to Modern Times

Chapter 12 Rewards and Mysteries

Lynn and Leon were put to rest in a simple room in the side wing of the castle, with the Earl's guards standing guard outside the door. It was said to be for protection, but in reality, it was just for surveillance.

Lynn didn't care about this. He lay flat on the hard bed, repeatedly thinking about the possible reactions of the drug and the various situations he would face with different reactions.

Leon, holding his sword, leaned against the wall by the door, closing his eyes to rest; the knight's vigilance was ingrained in his very bones.

The night passed without a word, yet it felt exceptionally long…

Just as dawn was breaking, a slightly hurried knocking sounded at the door.

Standing outside the door was Knight Gavin, a hint of joy on his face, his eyes bloodshot. When he looked at Lynn, his usually cold gaze held a complex, indescribable emotion.

"Lord Lynn, the Earl requests your presence."

Lynn's heart tightened, but she asked without showing any emotion, "How is the young master?"

"...The fever has gone down a bit," Gavin replied briefly, stepping aside to make way. "His breathing doesn't sound as rapid anymore."

He didn't say anything more, but those words put Lynn's mind at ease.

"Azithromycin is working; at least the infection is under initial control." Lynn thought, "As expected of a system product, I'm safe now..."

When I returned to the bedroom, which was filled with the smell of medicine, the atmosphere was completely different from the night before.

A crack was drawn in the curtains, and the cool morning light shone into the room, dispelling some of the gloom.

Count Lehmann remained by the bedside, but his back was straighter. The Countess sat in a chair by the bed, carefully wiping the thin layer of sweat from her son's forehead with a damp cloth.

Although the two still looked haggard, the sense of despair on the verge of collapse was gone.

The boy on the bed was still fast asleep, but his brows had relaxed considerably, and his face, which had been flushed from the fever, had returned to normal.

When he saw Lynn enter, Earl Lehman turned around, his bloodshot eyes looking at him intently, his gaze filled with gratitude.

The next moment, the count performed a standard noble salute:

"Lord Lynn...thank you for your generous rescue of my son!"

"You're too kind, Your Excellency," Lynn returned the greeting, saying, "The medicine is fighting the illness, but the process takes time. Please be sure to take the medicine on time and in the correct dosage, and pay attention to the dietary restrictions I mentioned last night. The next two or three days are crucial; if you can get through this smoothly without any relapses, you'll be fine."

"……clear……"

Earl Lehman was silent for a moment, then suddenly said, "What do you need in return? As long as it's within my power and doesn't violate the King's or the laws of the land, I can grant your request."

"They've finally arrived..." A glint of light flashed in Lynn's eyes.

His expression remained unchanged as he shook his head: "Your Excellency, I did not come here seeking any reward. Initially, I simply couldn't bear to see Dr. Herbert's family suffer innocently. However..."

Lynn changed the subject: "If possible, I would like to ask you to lend me some supplies."

Lynn emphasized the word "borrow".

Tell me more.

"First, there's the matter of food," Lynn said gravely. "Gray Rock Town is barren and its people are poor. The newly cultivated fields haven't been harvested yet. Although I've tried my best to keep it afloat, the granaries are running low. I can't stand by and watch my people starve. Therefore, I humbly request a batch of food from you. It doesn't need to be refined rice or flour; just any coarse grains will do. The quantity... should be enough to feed about 50 people for a month."

"Food for 50 people..." the count pondered, a request that was within his means and for a justifiable reason.

"Secondly, weapons," Lynn continued, his expression more serious this time. "Just a few days ago, my town was attacked by a small group of monsters at night. Although we managed to repel them, it exposed the fact that our people were almost completely unarmed, relying solely on farm tools and wooden sticks for defense. To prevent a recurrence, I urgently need to arm our able-bodied men with basic weapons."

Lynn hesitated for a moment, then said, "I don't need fine swords. Even just twenty spears, ten hunting bows, and some arrows will do. At least that will give my people some means of self-defense."

"Monster attack?" Count Lehman's brows furrowed immediately, a clear look of confusion on his face. "In Grayrock Town? When exactly, and on what scale?"

"Just four or five days ago, around midnight, about a dozen monsters attacked the town, but we repelled them by relying on the low walls," Lynn described, carefully observing the Earl's reaction.

The count's confusion deepened. He slowly shook his head, his tone very certain: "That's strange. My territory has been unusually quiet this year. The border patrols have only reported traces of ordinary wild beasts, with absolutely no signs of large-scale monster activity. The southwestern wasteland has never been peaceful, but such clear attacks on human settlements... I haven't heard of any in the last six months."

His gaze sharpened: "Lord Lynn, are you sure it's a monster? Not a wild beast?"

"Yes, Your Excellency, I am quite certain that the monster's appearance and the fact that it turns into black ash after death are definitely not those of a wild beast," Lynn affirmed, though the doubts in his heart suddenly deepened because of the count's words.

Count Lehman had no reason to lie to him about such a thing. The Earl's territory was much larger than Grayrock Town, yet it had not been attacked by hordes of monsters this year. On the other hand, in Grayrock Town, which was just a small area, a "monster siege" had already taken place shortly after he arrived.

This is very wrong!

"If that's the case, I grant your request for that batch of weapons." The count's attitude became even more agreeable upon hearing that it was caused by demons.

"I'll have Gavin allocate a batch of standard-issue spears and a stockpile of hunting bows for you. Food and provisions will be provided as well. You saved my son; these supplies are nothing." He paused, his gaze deep and thoughtful.

"However, the matter of the monsters is quite strange. After you return, you need to be extra vigilant and strengthen your reconnaissance."

"I understand. Thank you, Your Excellency!" Lynn bowed respectfully, a great weight lifted from his heart. The short-term problem of supplies and weapons was finally solved...

As Lynn left the castle, two fully loaded wagons appeared behind his horse. One was filled with sturdy sacks of dark, plump wheat and beans, enough to get Greyrock Town through its most difficult times.

The other vehicle was covered with an oilcloth, beneath which were neatly tied thirty gleaming iron-tipped spears, fifteen well-maintained hardwood hunting bows, and several bundles of arrows.

Sir Gavin personally escorted him to the drawbridge, his attitude much more polite than when he arrived: "Lord Lynn, the supplies list has been handed over. Take care on your journey."

"Thank you for your help, Captain Gavin." Lynn cupped his hands in greeting, taking one last look at the solid castle standing in the morning light.

The trip was far more fruitful than expected. Not only did it resolve the imminent survival crisis, but it also unexpectedly yielded important information about monsters.

He must get back as soon as possible. With these supplies, the wall can be built faster, and the people's hearts will be more united.

At the same time, the mystery of why the monsters have their eyes on Grayrock Town must also be investigated.

Perhaps it's time to send Bray's hunting party to explore further west into the wilderness and south to the border...
