Chapter 54 Attack on the Vocational College
Tokyo Vocational College, student dormitory.
Zhenyi sat on the not-so-spacious single bed, holding a velvet cloth in her hand, carefully wiping the revolver that had always been with her. Her movements were slow, and she wiped every part and every inch of the barrel repeatedly.
On the first day of the twelfth month, I sat on the windowsill, with my back to the moonlight.
"Aren't you going to sleep?"
"I'm not sleepy." Zhenyi didn't even look up, only pausing slightly in her movements. "Besides, I can't fall asleep."
"Because of them?" December 1st pointed outside the door.
Zhenyi did not answer, which can be taken as tacit agreement.
Even though Gojo Satoru had acknowledged the existence of the new December, and even though everyone at the high school was trying to show acceptance, the sense of alienation still made Mai feel very uncomfortable.
"Don't overthink it." December walked up to her, reached out and ruffled her hair. "Don't waste your energy on this. Once we defeat Lu Suo and exorcise those demons, we'll have plenty of time to study this."
As Zhenyi listened to December's words of comfort, a faint smile curved her lips.
......
The storage room outside the warehouse of the college is forbidden.
Assistant supervisor Sato, a middle-aged man nearing forty with a receding hairline, was frowning as he sorted through the remnants of cursed artifacts collected from various places that day.
"Honestly... Mr. Gojo is one thing, but how come even the students are so careless?" Sato complained as he sorted through the wooden boxes with sealing symbols on them. "These are all top-grade dangerous goods, and they just casually threw them in the trunk."
He sighed and bent down to lift a heavy box.
"Clang!"
The locks on the box seemed loose and suddenly popped open during transport, scattering its contents all over the floor.
"Ah! Oh no!" Sato turned pale with fright and quickly squatted down to pick it up.
Scattered on the ground were some unknown animal bones, several rusty daggers, and a... mask.
That wasn't an ordinary Noh mask or spellware. It was a jet-black mask, made of a material that resembled wood or the keratin of some kind of creature. The mask's design was extremely bizarre, with two sharp ears standing upright, like... a bat.
Just as Sato's hand touched the mask, his movement stopped.
Gradually, his eyes began to become unfocused.
In the dimly lit cleaning room, a soft murmur seemed to be heard.
"Put on my... wings..."
"Flying...in the night..."
Sato was originally a timid and cowardly person, but at this moment, an irrepressible desire welled up in his heart. He felt that he had spent his whole life serving those sorcerers, living like an ant.
He wanted to fly; he wanted to look down on everything.
"Just... wear it..."
With trembling hands, Sato picked up the bat mask.
Slowly, it pressed against his face.
"Click."
The mask seemed to come alive, with countless tiny tentacles sprouting from its edges and piercing deeply into Sato's skin.
"Aaaaaaahh ...
The screams lasted for a full minute.
Sato's body began to convulse violently, his suit jacket ripped open, and a pair of huge, leathery black wings suddenly unfolded, bringing with them a gust of foul wind.
The eyes that were originally human eyes have now turned into blood-red beast eyes.
Meanwhile, the shadows in the organizing room began to boil.
Countless black shadows emerged from the corners of the walls, the bottom of cabinets, and the ceiling. They were monsters with broad, fleshy wings, long limbs, and sharp claws.
The Nightbats. This is a new shadow legion. They can fly, and are extremely fast. They can also attack opponents with energy waves. Their weaknesses are weak attack power and low defense.
"hiss!!!"
With a piercing shriek that sent shivers down one's spine, Sato—or rather, General Night Bat—slammed through the roof of the storage room and soared into the sky.
Following closely behind were dozens of shadow night bats that resembled vampires.
......
At this moment, in the boys' dormitory.
Yuji Itadori was lying in bed reading a comic book when suddenly he sat up abruptly, his ears twitching.
"Fukuhiro! Did you hear me?"
Fushiguro Megumi, who was in the next bed, had already sat up and summoned the Jade Dog.
"Ah, I heard that. And this aura... it's disgusting." Fushiguro Megumi frowned. "It's even more repulsive than a regular cursed spirit."
"Bang!"
The dormitory window suddenly shattered.
A dark shadow rushed in like lightning, its sharp claws aimed straight for Tiger Staff's throat.
"I knew it!" Itajima reacted extremely quickly, rolling over on the bed to avoid the claws while kicking the shadowy figure in the abdomen.
"Thump!"
The dark figure was kicked away and crashed into the wall.
By the moonlight, the two finally saw the attacker's true face.
It was a monster with only its upper body and its lower body connected to shadow. It had a bat-like head and wings, blood-red eyes, and held a short spear made of black mist in its hand.
"What is this? A new type of cursed spirit?" Itachi assumed a fighting stance.
"Watch out, there's more than one!" Fuhei shouted.
Before the words were even finished, countless black dots obscured the moon in the night sky outside the dormitory. Those were swarms of night bats, hovering above the college, their ultrasonic shrieks shattering all glass objects in an instant.
"Enemy attack! All personnel assemble!"
The sound of the bone reverberated in the corridor.
On the playground.
The students quickly assembled. But these enemies were clearly more troublesome than any cursed spirits they had encountered before.
They can fly.
And it's extremely fast.
"Damn it! I can't hit it!" Maki swung her cursed longsword, trying to knock down a night bat that was swooping down. But the monster made an extremely exaggerated turn in mid-air, easily dodging the attack, and then unleashed an energy wave in return.
"Boom!"
A large crater was blown into the ground.
"Thorns! Get them down!" the panda shouted, protecting Nishimiya Momo.
Dog-Turtle pulled down its collar and roared at the sky, "[Fall]!"
A powerful incantation erupted.
The dozen or so night bats in the air froze, then fell like kites with broken strings.
"Now's the time!" Kamo Kenki formed hand seals, "Crimson Blood Manipulation Technique - Hundredfold Convergence - Blood Piercing!"
Several jets of blood pierced the falling night bat with pinpoint accuracy.
"Pfft pfft pfft!"
The black mist exploded instantly.
But the next second, something despairing happened. The dissipated black mist didn't disappear; instead, it reformed in the air, and within seconds, the night bats were flapping their wings and flying away again, completely unharmed.
"Are you kidding me? Immortal?" Yuuta Otsukoshi swung his sword, severing a night bat that was trying to ambush him, his brow furrowed. "Rika!"
A giant Rika appeared, slapping a swarm of night bats to pieces. But as before, they quickly regenerated in mid-air.
"it's useless."
A cold, detached voice cut through the clamor of the battlefield and reached everyone's ears.
Everyone turned around.
Zhenyi, wearing a trench coat, slowly emerged from the shadows of the dormitory building. Her steps were unhurried, her right hand hanging at her side, holding a silver revolver.
"This is the Shadow Legion." Mayi looked up at the monsters flying all over the sky. "These shadows are similar to shikigami. As long as they don't kill the caster, they can regenerate to a certain extent. To defeat them, we must increase our spell power output, such as Black Flash or my sister's attack, or..."
"Is there any other way?" Maki asked.
"Like this."
Zhenyi raised her gun. Instead of unleashing a large-scale explosion as usual, they attempted more precise control.
"Bang! Bang! Bang!"
The gun didn't spew out ordinary fire, but rather magical bullets with a faint crimson hue.
Three night bats, swooping down at high speed, were instantly pierced through the forehead. Golden-red flames erupted from the wound, instantly spreading throughout their bodies. Before they could even scream, they were completely reduced to nothingness, leaving not even a trace of black mist.
