American homeless people, surviving in the city
Chapter 12 Beautiful Dining Waitress
Lin Qi was still very happy to see acquaintances.
Although the old black man was sometimes a bit harsh, he was indeed the first person to proactively help Lynch after he transmigrated. Therefore, Lynch had a very good impression of him.
Although only one day had passed, he immediately went over excitedly:
"Hey! Grandpa! How was yesterday?"
The old Black man turned around at the sound, and when he saw it was Lynch, a deep, wrinkled smile spread across his face.
"Oh, it's you, kid. You listened to me yesterday and moved camping over to the green belt?"
"Yes, that place is quite nice, thanks to your directions!"
Since the line in front of the relief food truck was long anyway, Lynch simply started chatting with the old black man while waiting in line:
"I was in a rush yesterday and forgot to ask your name. Do you usually hang out in this area?"
Having gotten to know Lynch over time, the old black man had no intention of protecting her privacy.
"Just call me Old James, James Banks. I usually stay on Third Avenue and don't go anywhere else. I only came here today because I heard that a new food truck has started operating nearby, so I thought I might be able to mooch a free meal."
"Even Third Avenue has heard about this food truck?" Raul exclaimed in surprise. "No wonder the line was so long today!"
"Even on the street, don't underestimate the speed at which information spreads, children."
"If this were just an ordinary food truck, it wouldn't attract so many people," old James replied calmly. "The important thing is that, supposedly, you don't need to make an appointment or register your identity information to get a meal from this truck."
"As you know, once your identity information is registered with these charities, it becomes very difficult to find a decent job."
"Most reputable companies wouldn't hire someone like us who's homeless and living on the streets, relying on handouts for meals."
Although James didn't say it explicitly, when Lynch looked around the team again, he finally understood why there were quite a few people in the team who didn't look like homeless people.
They were probably recently laid off. Although their financial lifeline had been cut off, they still wanted to reintegrate into society and find a proper job again!
Just as the group was chatting, a homeless man standing in front of old James couldn't help but turn around and chime in:
"Hehe, you're right, sir. Quite a few people come here just to freeload because they don't need to register their identity."
"But do you know how the news of this food truck recently opening to the public spread so far?"
"Hmm? What other reason could there be?" Even old James was puzzled.
The homeless man at the front of the line grinned lewdly again.
"It seems you don't know, old brother, but I don't usually hang out in this area."
"My buddies and I heard that this food truck had a really hot female server who was incredibly attractive, so we came all the way here to check it out!"
"I reckon there are quite a few people in this group who, like me, rushed here after hearing the news!"
"Really...?" Raul pursed his lips, clearly not believing it. "I've been homeless on the streets for over a year and I've never seen a single food service worker who's even remotely attractive. They're usually either big, burly men or old ladies who are enthusiastic about community service. It's rare to see a female under 35."
"You didn't just hear some fake news again and come here to berate some old lady, did you?"
Faced with Raul's questioning, the homeless man was not annoyed. Just as he was about to explain himself, he heard a noisy commotion coming from the front of the line.
The commotion came and went quickly; within seconds, several gunshots rang out.
A few dozen seconds later, Lin Qi and the others watched as a reasonably well-dressed person was dragged away by two burly men in black police vests and thrown to the side of the road.
The man lay on the roadside, with no blood seeping from his body, but he kept clutching his chest and abdomen, groaning and unable to get up.
A rustling conversation quickly filled the ranks, and soon after, the group received a message from the front:
"It's said that the person was chased away by OSL security guards who were responsible for maintaining order because he harassed the food server."
OSL is the charity that operates these meal distribution sites, and even the homeless are quite familiar with the organization.
Upon hearing this, the homeless man at the front of the line turned around, chuckled, and seemed to understand everything without saying a word.
Raul also muttered to himself:
"Upon closer inspection, there are indeed far more security personnel around this area than near a typical food truck... Is that food server really that beautiful that OSL has specifically increased security measures for her?"
"Would a beautiful woman really be willing to do this kind of manual labor on the street?"
As he spoke, Raul's eyes began to wander with longing, and he was already fantasizing about something.
Lin Qi, however, still harbored some doubts about the rumor.
No... if someone were really so beautiful that it would affect their work, they probably wouldn't have been assigned to this job in the first place... and if she were really that good-looking, why would she bother working on the streets? Wouldn't it be better to do something that pays more?
But in any case, seeing is believing, and he only needs to wait a little while.
Fortunately, people like the one who was dragged away by security, those who exerted little force, were ultimately in the minority.
Most people either don't care about the appearance of the server because of their own circumstances, or they dare not act recklessly because of past experiences.
The entire line finally began to move slowly and orderly.
However, Lin Qi noticed that many people did not leave immediately after receiving the relief meals, but instead chose to stand on the roadside not far away, gazing at the direction of the food truck from afar.
There were even quite a few people who didn't look like homeless people.
For example, a few people dressed in traditional ethnic costumes, who looked like actors from a film crew, stood on the street with their food, quietly gazing in the direction of the food truck.
When Lynch looked at them, they immediately reacted and looked back at him.
Seeing that it was just a simply dressed homeless man watching them, the group smiled slightly at Lin Qi, then turned back to look towards the food truck.
Are they... talent scouts? Perhaps they're observing whether the rumored beauty meets their casting requirements.
Lin Qi wondered to himself.
For some reason, he had a vague feeling that those people's eyes seemed to have some ill intentions.
But he had no evidence and no reason to doubt it, so Lin Qi quickly dismissed this intuition as a misperception.
As the team moved forward in an orderly manner
Soon, it was Lin Qi and his group's turn to receive the relief meal.
As expected, without any identity registration procedures, the group arrived smoothly at the dining car.
When Raul finally saw the legendary food server, he couldn't help but exclaim in surprise, and even Lynch was momentarily stunned.
Inside the dining car window stood a tall woman with skin as smooth and white as jade. Her golden hair, as radiant as the sun, was not styled into large waves like most American women, but rather tied into a soft ponytail that gently draped over her shoulder.
Her emerald-green eyes, when looking at the crowd outside the food truck, showed no disdain or contempt; her gaze was clear and straightforward.
As for the hot figure the homeless man mentioned, it wasn't apparent under the thick clothing and apron.
The blonde, blue-eyed female server remained unresponsive to the astonishment and stares of the crowd, as if she were already used to it.
She quickly divided the food into thin paper bags, handed them to the group, and then spoke crisply and clearly:
"Here, these are for you, please take them."
