Hong Kong Entertainment 1979: A Beating Up the Manager at the Start
Chapter 36: Detailed Discussion
When Li Jiangbo returned home that evening, Zhao Yazhi had not yet returned.
He grabbed some food haphazardly, ate it, and then started writing his script.
Because it was copied directly from my mind, I wrote it very quickly, finishing in less than an hour.
After finishing writing, Li Jiangbo started drawing storyboards, and this time he put in extra care.
He didn't even notice Zhao Yazhi when she opened the door and walked to his side.
"Bo-zai, are you getting ready to make a new movie? Is it another campus comedy?"
Without turning his head, Li Jiangbo replied, "No, I'm preparing to shoot a heroic film."
Zhao Yazhi didn't understand what kind of movie Li Jiangbo was referring to as a "heroic film," but she had already made up her mind not to get involved in Li Jiangbo's affairs.
After 10 p.m., Li Jiangbo stopped and prepared to go to sleep, as he had a lot of things to do the next day.
As he lay down on the bed, holding Zhao Yazhi and inhaling her unique fragrance, he asked.
"Sister Zhi, what are your plans for the future?"
Zhao Yazhi turned her head and looked at Li Jiangbo with a puzzled expression. "What plans? I haven't thought about it yet."
Li Jiangbo looked at the lovely woman in his arms and asked, "So you're planning to keep filming TV dramas?"
Zhao Yazhi nodded, "I think this is a good idea. Once we've made some money, we'll buy a villa..."
After thinking for a moment, Li Jiangbo asked, "Why don't you just resign from TVB and come help me?"
Why would you have such a thought?
Li Jiangbo's statement makes sense. It's worth noting that although Zhao Yazhi debuted through a beauty pageant, she didn't immediately join TVB. Instead, she became a flight attendant.
When she joined TVB, she started working behind the scenes and even rose to the position of assistant director, which shows how capable she is.
"My company is short-staffed right now! I can't find suitable people, and I have to go film a movie later, so I don't have time to manage the company. Besides, you are the person I trust the most, and I feel at ease leaving the company in your hands."
Zhao Yazhi was so moved by Li Jiangbo's words that she burst into tears and hugged him, giving him a big kiss.
This kiss immediately piqued Li Jiangbo's interest, and he involuntarily tightened his arms around Zhao Yazhi.
The next day, Li Jiangbo went to work alone again, clearly indicating that he had failed the night before.
He wasn't worried about it at all. He figured he could work harder tonight, and even if it hurt his back a bit more, he'd eventually get Zhao Yazhi to help him willingly.
Li Jiangbo sat in his office, continuing to draw storyboards for "A Better Tomorrow".
A moment later, the secretary walked in with a stack of resumes.
"Boss, these are the resumes that have recently been submitted to our company. Take a look."
Without looking up, Li Jiangbo said, "Okay, put it here."
Li Jiangbo didn't raise his head all morning. It wasn't until his secretary brought him his lunch that he looked up, stretched his stiff neck, and began to eat.
By the time he finished drawing all the storyboards, it was already 1 p.m.
Only then did he pick up a stack of resumes from his desk and casually begin to flip through them.
After watching for a while, I asked my secretary to inform the person that the interview would begin at 2 p.m.
Before the secretary could finish the call, a job applicant arrived.
This interview was conducted personally by Li Jiangbo, who looked up at the door.
There stood Teresa Teng, obediently, outside the door. "Director Li, I've come to apply for the job."
Li Jiangbo nodded with a smile. He had a good impression of Teresa Carpio. In "Happy Ghost," the comedic scenes were basically performed by the three of them, and Teresa Carpio was one of them.
"Welcome to the audition. Are you interested in becoming an actor and signing with my company, or...?"
Teresa Carpio felt a little awkward. Although she had started in the entertainment industry at the age of 14, that was in Japan.
Back in Hong Kong, he filmed "Happy Ghost," which was quite successful.
During this period, although many people offered her opportunities, she rejected them all because they were too stingy.
Having heard that Li Jiangbo had started a company, she came here with the idea of giving it a try.
The two talked for a long time. Li Jiangbo signed Teresa Carpio, with the same terms as Rosamund Kwan and Cherie Chung, except that his base salary was 500 yuan less than theirs.
Seeing that Li Jiangbo had offered such a generous contract, Teresa Teng readily signed it.
After Teresa Teng left, another applicant came for an interview.
The man wore gold-rimmed glasses and carried a briefcase; he appeared to be very refined and composed.
"Hello, Mr. Li, this is my resume."
Li Jiangbo took the resume, glanced at it, and discovered that this guy was actually a returnee from overseas.
Li Jiangbo looked at the man in surprise. "Wow! A top student! What brings you here for an interview at my company?"
"Mr. Li, hello. My name is Song Chen, and I graduated from the Faculty of Law at Cambridge University. I'm here for an interview because your company is hiring."
Li Jiangbo was filled with questions. What did this mean? Was it really that direct?
However, considering his academic background, Li Jiangbo still gave him a chance.
Are you familiar with Hong Kong's laws?
Song Chen nodded. "The laws in Hong Kong are pretty much the same as what I learned in Cambridge, just in different environments."
Li Jiangbo nodded. "Then let's talk about copyright law."
Song Chen immediately responded and began to explain to Li Jiangbo in detail.
Halfway through the conversation, Li Jiangbo got bored and simply waved his hand, signing Song Chen's contract.
After signing Song Chen, the other interviewees were all unattractive. Li Jiangbo chatted with them for a few minutes and then told them to go home and wait for news.
Li Jiangbo was preparing to close up shop by 5 p.m.
A slightly younger, handsome young man walked into the interview room.
Li Jiangbo took a closer look and realized that this was none other than Chen Xunqi, the famous director from Hong Kong in later generations!
He knew this person very well; during the second simulation, it was this person who snatched the role of the young prince from Chen Xunqi in "The Prodigal Son".
Moreover, this guy is an all-rounder; he can do everything from composing music and producing to screenwriting and kung fu.
More importantly, Wang Jiawei was once his screenwriter.
Li Jiangbo shook hands with Chen Xunqi. "Hello, Mr. Chen, please have a seat."
Chen Xunqi looked at Li Jiangbo with a puzzled expression. "Mr. Li, do you know me?"
Li Jiangbo waved the resume in his hand. "I learned about you from your resume. Okay, let's not waste any more time. Let's start with a self-introduction."
Chen Xunqi nodded and began to introduce himself: "I started learning film scoring at the age of fifteen, kung fu at the age of twenty-eight, and became an actor last year. I have worked for Shaw Brothers and Golden Harvest."
Li Jiangbo nodded and asked, "What position are you applying for this time?"
"director."
Upon hearing about the position, Li Jiangbo became interested and wanted to test this all-around talent.
They took out the script for "Mr. Zombie" and gave Chen Xunqi a segment of it.
"Try to sketch this scene in your mind, and then draw it."
Chen Xunqi glanced at the clip, thought for a while, and then started drawing, while Li Jiangbo watched from the side.
After a while, Li Jiangbo realized that Chen Xunqi didn't seem to know how to draw movie storyboards, and shook his head helplessly.
It seems that even all-rounders have their shortcomings!
What Li Jiangbo didn't know was that Chen Xunqi had no experience as a director, let alone how to draw film storyboards.
Chen Xunqi handed in his paper in five minutes.
"Director Li, I've never directed a film before, and I can't draw either."
Li Jiangbo was taken aback when he heard this. This person had no experience, yet he could draw out the elements of a movie storyboard just by relying on his imagination. He was truly a genius!
He calmed himself down and said, "I welcome talent like Mr. Chen, so I've decided to hire you. You can start as an assistant director."
Chen Xunqi smiled and said, "No problem, it's just the salary..."
"Let's keep the monthly salary at two thousand. As for when you become a director, we'll sign a separate contract then."
Chen Xunqi nodded happily and then signed his name on the contract.
