Wasteland Lord: Starting from Thirty Days to Live
Chapter 72 Emma
Thirteen years ago, in Shangbu Town.
Aunt Anna, who sells fabrics, is looking towards the street corner, where there is a detached two-story building with stained glass windows. Sometimes, on sunny days, you can even see flower pots and green plants on the balcony.
That gentleman's home.
This gentleman is a scholar from the capital. He is said to have studied at the national university, but for some reason, he did not choose to stay in the capital after graduation and instead returned to the Reach.
But his presence was undoubtedly a convenience for the town's noble children.
Some middle-class merchant families, as well as minor noble families and knightly families, would hire this young man from the capital as their children's tutor, charging him a hefty sum.
His reputation for being a skilled teacher spread so far that a regular class was set up in his home.
Basically, every day, seven or eight children would come to his house in groups for lessons, and then leave in groups.
At 11:30 a.m., Aunt Anna silently counted the time, and sure enough, eight noisy children came out of the two-story building.
They were mostly fair-skinned and clean-cut children who seemed to be well taken care of.
Especially noteworthy was a girl with two small braids at the head of the group. The girl had fair and delicate skin and a cute appearance. She walked with a bouncy gait, appearing very lively. Standing confidently among all the students, she clearly indicated that the others followed her, which was quite unusual.
Of the eight children, seven were boys, and she was the only girl.
You should know that in their small town, the idea of hiring a private tutor for a girl is unthinkable.
Even the daughters of local earls mostly learned sewing, management, and bookkeeping skills in their own private residences.
Instead of hiring a private tutor to teach, you can do it this way.
It's clear that this girl is very pampered at home.
"Did you understand that question? If not, I'll explain it to you again!" The girl looked around and spoke to her friends.
"I don't want to listen, Emma. You've already said it three times. If I don't understand, I just don't understand," sighed the round-faced little boy standing to her left.
"Hmph, of course you won't understand if you're not listening carefully," Emma said with a hint of disdain.
"I really don't understand. You're clearly a knight's daughter, so how come you're so smart? Aren't knights supposed to be all brawn and no brains?" The thin-faced little boy standing to his right was very puzzled.
Emma felt even more contempt for them.
"My dad told me: A good knight needs not only well-developed muscles and a smart mind, but most importantly, a heart that protects the weak."
"I will become a very powerful knight like my father in the future, so I am different from you lazy bums who just want to eat and do nothing. I will study hard."
After Emma finished speaking, she proudly raised her head.
However, despite Emma's pride, the remaining seven children did not object to her at all, and even seemed to agree with her words.
What happened next explained this.
Some children dressed in burlap clothes with dirty faces saw the group of well-dressed children walking down the street and started making a fuss, even picking up mud from the ground and throwing it at them.
"Oh my, the little white piglets are here again! Even our pigs, after a thorough wash, aren't as white as them!"
These eight children either came from merchant families, were minor noble families, or, like Emma, had fathers who were knights.
Naturally, he was out of place among these children from ordinary families.
Emma glared at them fiercely when she saw someone throwing mud at them.
She bent down, picked up a clump of smelly sheep droppings, and threw it at the child who had just thrown mud at them.
Emma was very accurate; she hit the child in the head with a dung ball, turning the child's face into a dung-covered mess.
The remaining seven children made sounds of disgust, and even the children from ordinary families moved a little further away.
There's no other reason, it's mainly because of the strong smell.
Emma, having done all this, clapped her hands nonchalantly.
"Remember this: don't mess with me. I'm a future knight!"
The troublemaking children slunk away, while the remaining seven children looked at Emma with admiration.
That's why they have Emma as their leader.
These children actually have servants who can pick them up and drop them off at school, but they voluntarily choose to walk home after school so that they can spend more time with their classmates.
Today they did the same thing, chatting and telling jokes while observing the noisy but bustling market.
However, the market was acting strangely today. At the end of the street, there seemed to be some kind of disturbance, and screams could be heard.
Fights do happen frequently in the market, mainly because of pickpockets, but such a loud scream is quite rare.
Moreover, the screams did not stop; in fact, they seemed to be getting louder.
The eight children looked toward the end of the street with puzzlement, and saw a group of people growing from small to large, approaching from afar.
"Are they running this way?" one of the children asked.
"Why is that? Are they competing?" another child asked.
"Idiot! Something must have happened over there, they're running away!" Emma said, hands on her hips.
However, before the children could figure out what was going on, the group of people who had fled were already in front of them.
They all looked terrified, and as they ran, they kept looking back, as if something huge was chasing them.
As soon as those people saw the three children standing in the middle of the road, they immediately started shouting.
"Silly children, run!"
But it was too late. The screams grew louder and louder, and the ground rumbled.
It was only then that Emma realized what they were hiding from.
A gigantic, spider-like monster with eight tentacles sprouting from its back appeared behind the crowd in the middle of the street.
Emma and her group of children didn't have time to dodge and ran right into the monster.
"Weird, weird...monster," a child said, his teeth chattering and his voice trembling.
The other child's legs went weak and he couldn't speak; a suspicious liquid dripped from his trouser leg.
"Run!" Emma shouted, joining the fleeing group.
The remaining children, as if waking from a dream, scattered in a chaotic frenzy.
Emma ran three or four steps, not forgetting to look back, but what she saw made her heart sink.
The child who had been silent just moments before froze in place as the spider-like monster emitted a strange buzzing sound and drew ever closer to him.
The terrified child could only look up but couldn't move at all.
In a corner of the street, Aunt Anna was huddled under her stall, trembling with fear.
Aunt Anna and many others hiding in the corners had only one thought in their minds.
This child is doomed!
Sure enough, the spider-like monster raised a tentacle, pointing it directly at the child's head, about to stab it downwards.
Suddenly, a sheep dropping hit it hard on the head, right between the eyebrows.
The monster looked up in surprise, only to find a panting little girl standing opposite it, pointing at it with one hand on her hip.
"You monster, come and chase me!"
