Wasteland Lord: Starting from Thirty Days to Live
Chapter 22 Battle Bone Bear
The bone bear charged violently toward the gate, and this time the old oak door not only made a teeth-grinding sound, but also suffered substantial damage.
The massive old oak door had a dent in the middle from the head of the bone bear, and the sheet metal that was used to cover the door was deformed by the impact. One of the rivets even flew off.
Vittorio took all of this in view and immediately gave the order.
"Throw that resin down, during its next attack!"
The bone bear lowered its head and charged once more.
The soldiers on the city wall seized the opportunity and, just a second before the bone bear was about to hit the door, threw canisters of resin down from the city wall, smashing them hard on the bear's head.
Another impact, this time directly affecting the structure of the gate. Radial cracks began to appear around the dent, and the bolts inside the city gate were also bent and deformed by the impact.
Many people who were blocking the door were knocked into the air and fell heavily backward.
Edmund didn't waste any words. He dipped his finger in the resin, lit it, drew his bow, and shot the arrow.
A massive flame erupted from the bone bear's head, igniting cheers from the crowd!
Unexpectedly, the flaming bone bear did not panic. It simply shook its head twice, realized that the fire could not be extinguished easily, took two steps back, and came to a wheat field.
The bone bear did something that made everyone's eyes widen.
The bone bear plunged its head into the wheat field and then crushed its burning head hard into the mud.
It crushed the thriving wheat seedlings into dust, and at the same time, the fire on his body was extinguished instantly due to lack of oxygen.
"As expected, it's a level two monster," Edmund said in a deep voice. "It still retains considerable intelligence despite being affected by Akame's influence."
However, Edmund's reaction was quite different.
"My field!"
A soldier holding a bow and arrow suddenly shouted.
Vittorio turned around for a closer look and realized it was Henry who had asked him about meticulous farming that day.
He was staring intently at the wheat field that had been crushed into dust.
That was the land he had painstakingly cultivated for two months.
From planting the seeds to weeding and watering, he did everything himself, and he watched every wheat seedling grow.
By the end of the year, this was supposed to be a huge amount of grain, enough to feed many people, but this beast destroyed it all!
Henry, furious that his two months of effort had gone to waste, gritted his teeth, drew his bow, and fired an arrow at the bone bear in a fit of rage.
"You beast! I'll kill you!"
But the bone bear's head acted like a natural shield, deflecting the arrow without causing any damage.
Vittorio pressed down on Henry, whose eyes were bloodshot and who was furious.
"Don't waste arrows."
"But……"
"Use the arrows where they are more useful."
They fired arrows and set fires, but all their efforts failed.
This attack not only failed, but also enraged the bone bear.
He shook his fur, roared, and launched his third charge!
Another loud bang, followed by an undeniable tremor.
Vittorio heard the door creak and groan as it tilted.
John came running up from below, panting, to report to him.
"Sir... the bolt is broken."
Everyone frowned.
It now seems that this bone bear is truly capable of breaking down the door they thought was foolproof.
The crimson eyes had not yet dissipated. Once the gate was breached, the demonic beasts would swarm in, and the people hiding in the castle would become delicious food.
Edmund gripped his sword tightly and drew it.
"I'm leaving the command to you; I'm going down now."
Vittorio did not stop him, but simply let Isolde fight alongside him.
A moment later, Isolde also arrived on the city wall.
Without a word, Edmund leaped, spotted a protruding brick, paused on it for a moment, and then jumped to the base of the city wall, kicking up dust at the point of impact.
Isolde casually picked up a rope, tied it to the battlements, swung down, and landed lightly on the ground.
One after the other, the two landed on the ground and came to the bone bear.
From the city wall, the bone bear doesn't look very tall, but from the ground, you can clearly see that it is a huge creature.
When others stand up, they are almost as tall as the city gate.
The bone bear's dark eyes darted around listlessly. When it saw that there was actually fresh flesh and blood, it dared to walk up to its death!
It roared, turned around, and its fighting spirit was palpable.
Vittorio didn't sit idly by either. He immediately ordered the soldiers inside the castle to attack from the left and right side gates, holding back the small magical beasts and preventing them from interfering with the duel taking place at the city gate.
Meanwhile, the soldiers on the city wall continued to fire arrows to relieve their stress.
At this point, 110 minutes had passed.
Below the city gate, the bone bear and two knights faced off, forming a pincer movement.
Ultimately, it was the bone bear that couldn't hold back and launched an attack on the seemingly weaker Isolde.
However, Isolde was incredibly fast, dodging the bone bear's fatal blow in a swift movement, while Edmund launched a sneak attack from behind.
Edmund's attack was powerful and heavy, striking the bone bear with a dull thud, but the bone bear did not flinch at all, clearly showing that it was very tough and thick-skinned.
Isolde dodged the attack and then launched a flank thrust.
However, Isolde's sword was too thin, like a needle compared to the bone bear's body. It would only cause a stinging sensation and could not cause any real damage.
The two humans and the beast then began to fight.
Although Vittorio didn't have much combat experience, he could tell that this was a protracted battle that wouldn't end anytime soon.
What can I do?
He couldn't help but think to himself.
Having fought to this point, he has exhausted all means and done everything he could. Perhaps, as Edmund said, he has done his best.
However, he could hear faint sobs coming from downstairs, and the sight of Henry's bloodshot eyes beside him was also stimulating his nerves.
"Who's crying?" Vittorio couldn't help but ask.
"Yes...the door bolt broke and hit someone, but there's no danger to their life."
John, the messenger, answered cautiously.
"How are the women and children downstairs?" Vittorio asked again.
"This isn't good; everyone's panicking," John thought to himself.
"Are you scared?" Vittorio asked him.
John, that cowardly fellow, has been making a fool of himself all the way from the capital, and even planned to escape just two months ago.
Unexpectedly, it was him who went up to the city wall to deliver a message to me again today.
John did not disappoint him, nodding in his unchanging nature.
"I'm scared, I'm still scared, I don't understand."
"What don't you understand?" Vittorio couldn't help but ask.
John swallowed hard.
"Those women and children downstairs, they were terrified. But when I came up, they were discussing using pitchforks as weapons. They were actually thinking of fighting the monster if it charged in?"
"And those two kids on the bridge just now. They were insane. The two of them dared to go to the other side of the bridge as bait, while one of them stayed on the bridge to fight against more than a dozen monsters."
"I watched him get torn to pieces; it was horrific."
John shook his head, seemingly still shaken.
"If you're scared, why did you come up here?" Vittorio asked with a hint of sarcasm.
"I came up here to protect the Lord's safety," John said obsequiously.
Vittorio smiled, thinking, "Perhaps it's to stay by the lord's side, enjoy protection, and be safer!"
But John's words also stirred something within him.
