Chapter 39 The Hut Guarded by Ezra

Rhodes spoke before anyone else could:

"I already know about Paril's situation."

Harvey was somewhat surprised: "Did Chairman Stanley tell you?"

"Hmm." Rhodes' face was ashen. "The guild leader has spies. Paril has been taken to the goblin camp south of town."

Upon hearing this, Harvey and Avira both turned their gazes toward Clint.

Rhodes keenly noticed the change in everyone's gaze and asked, "What's wrong?"

Clint said anxiously, "Why are you looking at me? I saw with my own eyes Paril being tied up and taken to a secluded hut near the mayor's house."

"I'm absolutely not mistaken."

"Following?" Rhodes hesitated for a moment. "Are you sure the mayor's guards didn't notice you?"

"I'm 100% sure that I used the advanced invisibility scroll that the captain gave me. Ordinary invisibility detection tools simply can't detect it."

Rhodes nodded.

He could tell that Harvey seemed to feel guilty about Paril being taken away.

Ivy smoothed her long blonde hair: "Then that doesn't add up."

"Either Stanley's informant was wrong, or Clint was misled."

"Anyway, the goblin camp is too far away. Let's go check out that hut first!"

"Let's raid the cabin first to rescue Paril, then raid the sanctuary to rescue Ashe!"

Rhodes murmured to himself.

no problem.

He then used the identification technique on each person in turn.

They confirmed that none of the people were shapeshifters.

Once this creature appears nearby, one must be constantly on guard against the risk of having one of their companions replaced.

Rhodes made a decision: "In that case, let's sneak into the place Clint mentioned and take a look."

"We'll go too, just in case a conflict breaks out." Harvey stood up with Clint.

The three men's eyes fell on Avira, who was playing with her hair.

"Of course I'll go, since Rhodes is my apprentice," Avira replied immediately.

......

Noon.

Captain Ezra, rubbing his round belly and slightly tipsy, returned to the secluded hut with a smug look on his face.

Life suddenly became wonderful after he became the mayor's personal guard captain.

Apart from the occasional tasks assigned by the mayor, his daily work consisted only of guarding this dilapidated house.

This gave him ample time to join the "black hand" and do some profitable business.

The hut was originally guarded by the town mayor's two bodyguard captains and their men in shifts.

But Ent had just been urgently dispatched from the town on some secret mission, and now he and a few of his men were the only ones left guarding the town.

However, Ezra didn't take this to heart and continued his daily revelry.

The dungeon inside the hut was well hidden, and there was also a sealing array set up at the entrance by a mid-level mage.

Even if Chairman Stanley came, he couldn't force it open.

He proudly waved the few silver coins in his hand.

This was found by his men this morning in the homes of the petrochemical patients who were taken away.

In accordance with the strict discipline of the guards, 20% of all the looted money was to be handed over to the captain.

"I didn't expect that even a few lowly people would have some savings."

While I was in a good mood, I went to the tavern next door and bought a small bucket of ale to enjoy for the afternoon.

He carried the wooden bucket with his right arm and staggered to the door of the small hut where he was responsible for guarding it.

The door opened with a "snap".

"You have ten minutes to eat, so hurry up."

The room was quiet.

Ok?

Ezra entered the room with a puzzled look, only to be met by a fist encased in armor, which made a dull thud.

Ezra collapsed straight down, unconscious, along with the barrel of ale.

When he opened his eyes again, he found himself chained to a chair, his body covered in wet ale.

Sitting on the bench opposite me was a figure who was covered up tightly, and his appearance was not discernible.

This is bizarre. Who on earth would dare to attack the mayor's personal guard?

Moreover, I am a member of "Black Hand".

Could they be from the Adventurers' Guild?

Stanley's men were also eccentric.

Seeing that he had opened his eyes, the other person spoke in a hoarse voice: "Dear Captain Ezra's Guard, I hope you will answer the following questions truthfully."

Ezra felt a magical light enter his mind.

For a moment, I just felt that the other person was so kind.

Ultimately, I subconsciously answered, "Okay..."

"There is a hidden underground door in this house, and a very powerful magic circle is engraved on the door."

"How is the magic circle activated?"

"It requires two runes to be pieced together. One is on me, and the other is on another captain of the guard, but he just left town to..."

Halfway through his speech, Ezra suddenly came to his senses.

This is magic that bewitches humans.

Damn it.

He reached out to try to break free of the chains.

Ezra clearly remembered that there were still a few bottles of Limit Break Elixir left in the cabin.

This potion can forcibly enhance all of one's abilities for a short period of time, but the price is that the body will suffer a backlash after the effects wear off.

Even if there are elite adventurers among them, I might not lose after drinking the potion.

Just as I was thinking this, I saw the person opposite me nod in my direction.

Ezra suddenly heard footsteps behind him, and then a punch slammed into his head with a whooshing sound.

He lost consciousness again.

"Damn it," Clint cursed, punching Ezra in the face a few more times.

Harvey gently removed his hood and looked at Rhodes and Ivy in the next room.

"The charm lasts for a limited time, but it looks like we won't get anything out of them by asking any more questions."

He retrieved the dark red rune from Ezra's body.

The runes were decorated with intricate patterns, but the patterns were incomplete, with half of them clearly missing.

Rhodes stared at the rune in thought: "We don't have time to leave town to look for another rune. Even if the mayor's guards are incompetent, Ezra's disappearance can't be kept secret for long."

"I can try brute-force."

Harvey shook his head: "I'm afraid this method won't work, my friend. The way this magic circle is drawn is extremely sophisticated. If we try to break it by force, the noise would be so loud that even the sunrise zone could hear it."

Everyone fell silent.

So, is leaving now and heading to the goblin camp to find Paril's whereabouts?

Rhodes frowned in exasperation, just as he was about to give up on the place for the time being.

Harvey stared at him, his tone tinged with apology: "Actually, I'm partly responsible for Paril being taken away."

"If I had been more perceptive, I would have had Clint take Paril into hiding when Ezra was discovered, and perhaps she wouldn't have been taken away."

"Humans, now is not the time to hold people accountable," Avira interrupted.

Harvey shook his head, his gaze sweeping over the three of them, and said in an unusually serious tone, "I hope you will keep what happens next a secret."

"This is not just helping me, it's also protecting your own lives."

Before he could finish speaking...

He placed his hand on the intricately patterned magic circle, and a dazzling light burst forth where his hand touched the circle.

The light lasted only a few seconds before the magic circle slowly opened, as if it had received a command.

The path leading to the dungeon is revealed.
