Chapter 37 Petrification Outbreak
early morning.
Sunset District.
The bard Harvey hid half his body by the window, discreetly observing the street.
The streets were almost deserted, lacking their usual bustling atmosphere.
Only the guards were running around.
These guards were all under Mayor Phoenix's command.
Some are human, while others are reptilians transferred from the Sunrise Zone.
They hurried along, heading in different directions with clear goals in mind.
Interspersed among them were cries and wails.
Harvey frowned, staring intently out the window, a bad feeling creeping into his mind.
"Bang"
The door was suddenly pushed open.
Clint entered anxiously; he had just returned from outside and spoke in a hurried tone:
"Harvey, Harvey!"
Harvey left the window and handed him a glass of water.
"No need to rush~ Take your time."
Clint took the glass and drank it down in one gulp. He took a breath before speaking, "I found out."
"The reason there are so many more guards in the Sunrise Zone is because of petrification disease..."
"Just last night, the petrification disease broke out on a large scale."
"I just heard from the guards that the number of patients with petrification disease this time is at least one hundred."
So many?
Harvey leaned back in his seat, deep in thought.
Phil is a town with a long history, and its current population is only around three or four thousand. A hundred people at once is indeed a considerable number.
Seeing Harvey remain silent, Clint paced rapidly around the room. "What do we do, Harvey? Has a curse descended upon this land?"
Harvey shook his head: "I'm more inclined to believe it was a deliberate curse."
He stroked his chin and muttered to himself, "If the purpose of the curse is to create chaos, the residents' anxiety will undoubtedly be a huge blow to the town's administrators."
"So, who, or rather which faction, benefited the most from this incident?"
On the surface, the "black hand" is undoubtedly the biggest beneficiary.
"Hey Captain!" Clint cried anxiously, "Stop thinking about all that now! What are we going to do?"
"Let me make this clear first, I'm not agreeing to leave here like this."
"Ashe is still undergoing intensive treatment."
"What's your rush?" Harvey glanced at Clint. "Right now, what kind of trouble do you think we can cause by rushing?"
He paused, then added, "Of course we won't leave."
"Don't forget, Rhodes' companions are still next door. Knowing this girl's personality, she definitely won't leave town with us; she'll wait for Rhodes to come back."
"etc!"
"That's not right!"
Clint, who had finally managed to sit down, suddenly sprang up.
"If the petrification outbreak occurs and the mayor seals off Sunset District, Rhodes won't be able to come back?"
In his mind, Rhodes was a sorcerer who could single-handedly deal with witches and was very well hidden.
If this character gets stuck in the sunrise area, wouldn't the team be missing a powerful mage?
"Ugh."
Harvey sighed helplessly: "Petrification disease has been defined by the mayor as an infectious disease that can only spread among humans. This place is too far away from other human towns, so it's impossible to close the Sunset Zone because of this."
"If you can't sit still, go check on your neighbor and tell them what's going on."
"We promised Rhodes we would take good care of her."
"Fine, fine, okay." Clint had no choice but to go out.
Harvey leaned back in his chair and closed his eyes to rest.
In the current situation, continuing to investigate on the streets will undoubtedly attract attention.
Do we have to wait for Rhodes to return with important clues before going to the Adventurers' Guild Master?
He was thinking quietly when he suddenly heard a noise coming from the street outside the window.
He got up and looked around.
A dozen or so human soldiers in armor were walking towards the inn, arranged in two columns.
These soldiers looked stronger and more intimidating than ordinary soldiers.
Their leader's armor was magnificent, bearing the emblem of the town of Phil.
Harvey recognized him; this man was Ezra, one of the personal guard captains under the mayor of Phil town.
Harvey stared intently at the other person's figure.
Why did Phoenix's personal guard captain personally lead his team here?
Hasn't the mayor always been indifferent to the affairs of the town?
Sudden.
Clint burst through the door in a panic: "The mayor has sent men! They're here to arrest Paril."
"What?" Harvey suddenly stood up.
"Paril has also developed petrification symptoms?"
"Absolutely not." Clint patted his chest, confidently stating, "I just checked on her, and there's not a trace of petrification."
Upon hearing this, Harvey beckoned Clint to walk towards the door.
The doorway to the next room has been cordoned off.
Ezra gestured with his chin toward the door.
The leading soldier immediately stepped forward.
"Bang"
He kicked open the door to Rhodes and Paril's room.
Paril's panicked and helpless state was revealed inside.
She resembled a frightened kitten with its fur standing on end, her hands unconsciously flashing with sparks.
Upon seeing this, the soldiers immediately raised their shields and stood in front of Ezra.
Ezra proudly raised his head: "I suggest you don't even think about resisting."
"If you haven't reached the elite level, don't even think about breaking through this shield's defense."
As they spoke, a soldier with a shield, accompanied by two other companions, cautiously approached Paril.
"Captain Ezra."
Seeing this, Xavi stepped forward and tipped his hat to Ezra.
Ezra didn't turn his head, but only glanced at the other person out of the corner of his eye.
Finally, his gaze fell on the Adventurers' Guild badge pinned to Harvey's chest.
"snort."
Ezra snorted in displeasure, ignoring Harvey, and simply said, "Get lost."
"Damn it!" Clint angrily stepped forward, but was pushed back by the guards with their weapons.
"Captain Ezra, our companion isn't infected with the petrification disease. There needs to be a reason to take her away, right?"
Harvey reached out to stop Clint and questioned him calmly and respectfully.
Ezra ignored Harvey's question and instead ordered the soldiers who entered the room, "Don't waste any more time. If she resists, cut off her hands."
Clint's eyes were filled with rage as he confronted the mayor's guards.
Harvey cleared his throat and shouted, "Captain Ezra, even if you're the mayor of Phoenix's personal guard captain, you still have to abide by the law, right?"
"You can't just arrest people without cause, can you?"
Ezra's lips curled into a sneer, and her tone was dismissive: "Because we suspect your companion is the source of the petrification disease, we need her to investigate with us."
"You're talking nonsense!" Clint felt his anger surge straight to the top of his head.
Even someone like me who doesn't like to use their brain can see how perfunctory this excuse is.
Ezra removed his right hand from his sword, pointing his index finger at Clint's nose: "If you're not convinced, you can try fighting. If you're not, then stop barking like an animal."
"You..." Clint was about to throw a punch when Harvey stopped him.
"stop."
Harvey stopped Clint.
Openly attacking the mayor's bodyguards is a serious crime.
Seeing Clint being stopped, Ezra spat in disappointment, as if talking to himself:
"Damn it, dealing with these lowly people every day still makes such a big fuss."
He waved.
The soldiers escorted Paril, who was wearing handcuffs that suppressed magic, and disappeared at the top of the stairs.
Harvey's eyes showed disgust.
He went back into the house, closed the door, and said to Clint:
"Anger cannot bridge the gap in strength."
"We need to do two things now. First, find a way to contact Rhodes."
"Secondly, Ezra doesn't know where he's taking Paril, so I'll use my advanced invisibility scroll to secretly follow them."
