Chapter 29 Sword Song
I sat with Harvey for a while longer.
The generous bard sponsored several invisibility scrolls before seeing the two off.
Rhodes then brought Paril back to the room.
They found Avira staring angrily at the dinner in front of her.
Seeing the other person return, he finally complained, "Why did it take you so long to come back? The venison pie would have gotten cold if you left it any longer."
Rhodes and Paril sat across the table: "Why don't you eat first?"
"Heh." Avira rolled her eyes dismissively. "Elves are a race that pays great attention to etiquette, unlike you uncouth humans."
"You're the vulgar one!" Paril retorted, glancing at the other's chest. "You vulgar and big elf."
"Tch, human brat." Avira scoffed.
Rhodes didn't participate in their bickering; instead, he focused on dinner.
Avira brought back two oil paper packages and a large glass bottle.
The first piece of parchment wrapped in oil paper contained three glossy venison pies. The aroma of roasted meat wafted from the yellowish-brown crust, filling the nostrils.
The second parchment contained baked apple tarts that smelled of cinnamon and were dripping with syrup.
The food was steaming on the table.
The glass bottle contains a beautifully colored fruit wine.
These are some of the best-selling dishes at the Griffin Tavern.
Rhodes was very satisfied with the elf's takeout.
Pick up the pie and take a bite.
The crispy crust and firm venison collide in your mouth, while the spiced juices explode in your mouth.
This was the first time he had ever eaten venison.
Venison has very little fat and a firmer texture than beef.
In my previous life, I always heard that eating venison could nourish the kidneys, but I didn't know if it was true.
Rhodes poured himself some fruit wine while pondering this.
Seeing that Paris was staring longingly at her wine glass, she asked, "Want a drink?"
Paril nodded vigorously.
Even though he was already an adult, Rhodes kept forbidding him from drinking.
"Okay, but don't drink too much."
Rhodes poured Paril another glass of fruit wine.
I felt a little guilty about the little girl's disappointed expression just now.
Since you want a drink so badly, then have one.
Paril took the glass, her clear blue eyes narrowing into slits as she savored the flavor.
Rhodes took a sip himself, and the slight sweetness with a hint of sourness perfectly balanced the greasiness of the venison pie.
He had just put down his glass when he noticed Avra staring straight at him.
Their eyes met, and the elven princess bowed her head to indicate that she was drinking.
Does this mean I should pour you a glass too?
Don't you have hands?
Rhodes raised an eyebrow, but still picked up the large bottle and filled Avira's glass as well.
Oh well, I guess I'll have to ask her for help later.
Avira picked up her glass, took an elegant sip, and offered a professional and fairly objective evaluation of the fruit wine:
"Rubbish."
Rhodes remained noncommittal.
This fruit wine is obviously inferior to the aged wines in noble households, but it is a fairly good recreational drink in a folk tavern.
With that thought in mind, I casually picked up a slice of baked apple tart that had already been cut and began to enjoy chewing it.
With a main course, wine, and dessert, it was a rather luxurious dinner for ordinary people at the bottom of society.
Paril had just finished eating a venison pie when a question suddenly came to mind.
She glanced warily at the archel, then asked, "Rhodes, Rhodes, where are you planning to let her stay tonight?"
Avira wiped her mouth with a napkin before speaking, "I booked a single room before I left. What, you have something to say about it?"
Paril raised her head, not to be outdone: "What could I possibly think? You just need to stop living here."
Avira disdainfully ignored the human girl.
She slowly put down her napkin and looked at Rhodes: "I only stayed one night. Lend me some more tomorrow, and I'll pay you back when I have the money."
Rhodes shook his head: "One night is enough."
"I want to go to the sunrise area tomorrow."
"What does your entry into the Sunrise District have to do with me? My house in the Sunrise District has been sealed off." Avira crossed her arms, thrusting her ample breasts forward.
"I want to investigate the 'Black Hand' craftsman, Iron Hammer. You've lived in the Sunrise District and are familiar with it, which will save me a lot of time."
Rhodes briefly described his and Harvey's investigation into the petrification disease.
"Our goals should be aligned on the issue of targeting the 'black hand'."
Avira scrutinized Rhodes for a moment: "I really don't like them, especially that damned drow, Cassandra."
"But you look so weak, how can we investigate?"
Rhodes didn't argue: "I have my own ways of handling things. Just take care of yourself if you encounter danger."
"Okay, I accept your suggestion."
After finishing her meal, Avira stood up and said, "I'll go to the Sunrise District with you tomorrow, but we need to get some armor first."
The puppet armor he was wearing before was now useless; the only thing he could use was a greatsword.
Rhodes had no objection.
I also need to replenish some of my own combat items.
Seeing that Avira had found a rag and was carefully wiping the greatsword, he couldn't help but ask:
"Aren't you elves skilled with bows and light weapons?"
"You look more like a barbarian than a human being."
"Tch, those are just stereotypes." Avira seemed quite disdainful of those weapons: "Whether it's a bow and arrow or a rapier, they're so flimsy and boring to hold."
"Don't you feel safer holding such a heavy greatsword?"
As she spoke, she easily lifted the greatsword with one hand.
Feeling the weight in my hands, I was very satisfied.
Rhodes tried to lift this greatsword, and even with his adult physique, he couldn't fully lift it with both hands.
The elf before me had thin arms and legs, yet it played with the greatsword like a toy.
Does this conform to physics?
Seeing Rhodes staring at her greatsword, Avira looked up and met his gaze: "Want to learn? I'll teach you."
Rhodes shook his head: "No, being a mage is fine. I have no intention of changing my profession."
My physical condition is simply not suitable for a physics profession.
"Who said you were going to change careers?"
Avira proudly raised her chin:
"Our Elven race once created a mage subclass that combined swordsmanship, magic, and dance, called the Sword Chanter."
"Sword chanters have a spell called Sword Song, which is also an elven magic we created."
"It allows the spellcaster to gain extraordinary speed, agility, and focus for a short period of time."
"This will give even a seemingly weak mage like yourself some melee combat ability."
Sword Singer? Sword Song?
It sounds powerful.
Melee combat is every spellcaster's dream.
Rhodes looked extremely surprised: "As expected of the elves, they can actually create such powerful and elegant magic."
Avira's eyes narrowed happily, quite pleased with the other person's expression and words, and she spoke cheerfully:
"Since you have such good taste, I'll teach you magic and sword songs first, and I guarantee you'll master them in three days."
