Three Kingdoms: Conquer Wu from Maicheng with Cavalry and Swords, Don't Fall Behind
Chapter 44: Who is the real protagonist?
The morning sun pierced through the clouds, warmly illuminating all things. Guan Yu created a show of force to distract the enemy, running for a day and two nights, fighting in more than thirty battles, and finally resting his horse on a hilltop when he was exhausted.
"Old man, you've had a tough time following me."
Guan Yu stroked Red Hare's mane, his eyes filled with pity. The journey had been so bumpy, his bones felt like they were about to fall apart.
Red Hare snorted and ate beans to regain its strength.
"I really miss the days when Your Majesty was here. We didn't have to hide, and our bodies never felt tired. The exhilarating feeling of killing enemies was so captivating. Fortunately, the bandits are too busy to deal with Maicheng right now," Guan Yu thought to himself.
Suddenly, the earth trembled, and a thousand horsemen swept across the plains. The brave warriors raised their arms and struck the giant cowhide drum, the sound carried by the wind and resounding throughout the heavens and earth.
The pursuers are coming.
"Giddy up!" Guan Yu did not hesitate, immediately mounting his horse. The sound of hooves rang out, his spirit unmatched in the world. Dozens of riders beside him quickly spurred their horses to catch up, their eyes resolute.
Wu's army, in several large, medium, and small formations, closed in on each other. Banners fluttered and rustled.
Guan Yu gazed at the massive wall of people ahead, continuing his frantic search for a weak point to break through. He gripped his crescent blade tightly, his expression more solemn than ever before.
"Gan Xingba is here! Guan, you traitor, where do you think you're going? You're in such a sorry state!" Gan Ning's voice was impassioned, echoing through the heavens and earth. Behind him, banners blotted out the sky, and his soldiers charged forward like a surging tide. They banged their swords and shields and shouted, their battle cries rising like a tidal wave crashing across the land.
He chased for a day and two nights, his energy and vitality seemingly boundless. What a life is all about, isn't it, striving for unparalleled achievements? An opportunity should never be missed. Guan Yu's head was undoubtedly his.
Lu Meng reined in his horse and halted, announcing the duties of the various military units and ranks. The messengers quickly rode off to relay the general's orders.
Generals such as Gan Ning, Zhou Tai, Ding Feng, Ling Tong, Xu Sheng, and Zhu Huan were all under his command. Each of them, taken individually, was a renowned figure in Jiangdong.
The wind whipped up the helmet plumes and fluttered the cloaks. Lü Meng looked down at the formation and saw the Jiangdong soldiers' morale soaring, rising like smoke from a beacon.
Gan Ning, this fighting general, is both loved and hated. Today will be his hunting ground.
Wu's banners stretched endlessly, covering the central army. The cavalry circled their horses, relentlessly entangled with the Martial Saint, occasionally unleashing a mounted archery attack to restrain him.
A general donned armor, mounted a chariot, and ordered his cavalry to raise their flags and charge past the ranks. His face bore several arrow scars, revealing his fierce and imposing appearance.
"The brave warriors beneath the chariot charge into battle, holding high the flag!" It was Zhou Tai.
He ordered a surprise attack; the dense footsteps, initially slow, gradually quickened, approaching from afar, their sound chilling to the bone.
The banners of Gan, Zhou, Ding, Ling, Xu, and Zhu were displayed separately, and tens of thousands of soldiers spread out for miles, their momentum like a rainbow.
"Guan Yu, you have lost Jingzhou and your reputation is ruined. Why don't you just die!" Gan Ning pressed on relentlessly, a bloodthirsty smirk playing on his lips.
"Follow me, Guan Yu, and break through!" Guan Yu steadied his stirrups, spurred his horse forward, and charged into the enemy ranks, his crescent blade splattering blood on his throat.
The horse's hooves spun sharply, countless spear tips whizzing past. The crescent blade followed the turn, striking into the air; with a series of cracking sounds, spears and halberds snapped in two. The red steed galloped forward, clearing a path, charging straight at the broken spears, tearing open a gap in the armor.
Guan Yu glanced sideways and saw that not a single rider could keep up. They charged bravely and fearlessly, only to be pierced by spears and halberds, instantly riddled with pincushions.
"Tiger warriors, tiger warriors, charge into battle and raise the flag!" Zhou Tai drove his chariot, pushing it forward and pressing down on Guan Yu.
"You're courting death!" Guan Yu had barely uttered the words when his chariot crashed into him. The two generals clashed, sparks flying from their weapons.
Zhou Tai's longsword flew out, his arm went numb from the shock, and he revealed a look of astonishment. Such powerful suppressive force! What a Guan Yu who refuses to grow old! He ordered the armored and shield-bearing warriors under the chariot to step forward and form a defensive wall, and the captains of each formation gave their orders in succession.
"Halberdiers—advance! Archers—nock your weapons!"
Guan Yu's tiger eyes widened, and he swung his arms like a full moon, slashing horizontally with his crescent blade. Blood splattered everywhere, and severed arms and broken halberds flew in all directions.
Arrows whizzed past his ears and pierced the ground, each one sending chills down his spine.
Beneath the chariot, the tiger-like warriors raised their spears like a forest, thrusting forward with sharp, pointed spears, their edge fully revealed.
Guan Yu tightened the reins, the divine steed reared up, its iron hooves raised and then fell sharply, turning lightly and departing.
The crescent-shaped blade swung wildly, unstoppable. Countless heads shattered in response, splattering red and white blood.
Those who got close were killed before they could even raise their shields; their faces were already shattered.
Guan Yu's horse galloped like lightning, unmatched by any pursuer. Amidst the vast army, a streak of blood stretched for dozens of feet, forcefully piercing through the enemy lines.
After a two-hour chase, Red Hare neighed, panting heavily, its voice like a broken calf, and collapsed to the side.
Caught off guard, Guan Yu fell from his horse. After two nights and a day without rest, the divine steed, in a burst of energy, carried its master through the encirclement, only to burn itself out.
As the iron cavalry surged forward, amidst the concealment, the magnificent banner bearing the character "吕" (Lü) seemed about to emerge. Lü Meng, riding a tall horse, stopped his horse and stood fifty paces away, gazing intently.
Gan Ning roared like a tiger, shaking heaven and earth: "Run, you traitor Guan, why aren't you running anymore? Today, I, Gan Xingba, will make my name known throughout the enemy nation!"
Guan Yu ran a distance before a series of whooshing sounds came from behind him. He quickly spun around, brandishing his sword to parry, but three arrows pierced his flesh.
Having been on the road for so long, he felt sorry for Red Hare and had long since removed half of its armor, leaving the armor's defensive capabilities significantly diminished.
Several men surrounded and attacked, engaging in fierce combat. Banners fluttered, spears and halberds clashed, and hundreds of corpses lay on the ground.
Guan Yu was wounded multiple times and his life hung by a thread.
Half an hour later, Ling Tong spurred his horse, sword in hand, and rode to the front of the formation, stepping ahead of Gan Ning: "Guan Yu's head is mine!"
Guan Yu smashed the horse's head with a thunderous crash, blood splattered and bones shattered, and the general, caught off guard, fell from his horse.
As his warhorse collapsed, Ling Tong still charged forward, slashing at Guan Yu.
boom!
The sword struck like a heavy bell, its clanging sound causing a sharp pain in the tiger's mouth.
"What a scoundrel!" Ling Tong was shocked and couldn't believe that an injured old man was still so powerful and domineering.
Guan Yu gasped for breath, feeling thick blood filling his nose and throat, clogging his breathing. He couldn't get any air in; each exhale felt like his lungs were bursting.
"I can't wait for Your Excellency..."
This battle lasted for two nights and a day; even an iron body couldn't withstand it.
As Lü Meng gazed into the distance, he saw a seemingly invincible figure, his hair disheveled, hanging down alongside his blue cloak:
"A dying man who has struggled for so long should be proud."
"All generals, listen to my command! Charge!"
Gan Ning, Zhou Tai, Ling Tong, Xu Sheng, and Zhu Huan advanced, with Ding Feng bringing up the rear.
dong dong!dong dong!
Guan Yu's tiger-like eyes gazed in the direction of the loudest drumbeats, and he and Lü Meng locked eyes for a long, long time, as if time itself had stood still. The next moment, he snatched a spear and hurled it directly at the "Lü" banner, a single point of cold light reflecting off it in the sunlight.
"Grand Commander, be careful!" the Jiangdong youths shouted, their souls trembling with fear.
"In my destiny, Guan Yu will always be a loser!" Lü Meng held the reins firmly with one hand, stood his horse on a high place, and his eyes were calm without the slightest ripple.
Lu Meng did not flinch; his conviction was so strong that he was certain he could seize Jingzhou. He was not afraid of possible death, just as a protagonist never needs to worry about a villain's dying counterattack, because destiny is on his side.
The spear pierced the air, lifting the hair at the corner of Lü Meng's eyebrow, and then passed through a guard behind him, eliciting a piercing scream. Throughout the entire ordeal, he didn't even blink.
"The mandate of heaven is in Wu! The mandate of heaven is in Wu!!" Countless Jiangdong youths went mad.
……
Qi Ye logged on, and his heart sank. His intuition told him that the sky had fallen.
