Chapter 10 "Support"
The sky was filled with stars, and the soft moonlight spilled over the silent cemetery, with only the sound of breathing echoing in the air.
The battle had just ended, all the ghouls had been wiped out, and no trace of demons was seen, giving the adventurers time to rest and prepare.
"What a pity about my rune arrows," Seth said, looking at the shattered remains of the corpse on the ground with heartache in his eyes. "These are the only few my brother left me, and I never thought they would be used on ghouls."
He turned back to look at Roland, who was sitting on the ground: "Are you alright?"
Roland sat on the ground, breathing heavily. The lining of his leather armor was already soaked with sweat. He was unfastening his damaged arm guard to check his injuries. Fortunately, there was nothing serious: "It's nothing, just my hand is a little sore."
"With the protection of the god of war, you, a newcomer, have already surpassed most humans in your first adventure!"
The sudden praise startled Roland for a moment. He then looked up at his surroundings and realized why Roland had said that.
The murky, dark red blood stained the land with a new film, which, under the shimmering moonlight, resembled thick, greasy oil floating on the surface, so nauseating it was almost disgusting.
Broken torsos were scattered everywhere, and the dozen or so severed heads, though still contorted in grotesque expressions, had long since lost the ability to move.
Killing nearly ten ghouls single-handedly is indeed a "glorious" achievement for a novice adventurer.
Seth even asked Roland again, "Is this really your first time going on an adventure?"
Roland nodded.
"Killing monsters, isn't it disgusting at all?"
"Why are you being disgusting?" Roland looked at him in confusion. "It's not me who's going to die."
Seth was speechless and could only silently take out a soap-like object to wipe the ghoul blood left on his body.
Roland appeared calm, but his heart was churning with turmoil.
He understood what Seth meant. Normal people would feel panic or even have the urge to vomit after killing other creatures.
But he didn't, or rather, he had become accustomed to such a horrific scene.
During his escape, the original owner traversed dozens of towns and witnessed many more terrifying and cruel scenes, even waking up in terror from nightmares for several days in a row.
Perhaps for this reason, since he killed the goblin yesterday, he has not felt any panic during the battle, but rather an unimaginable calm.
Kill, survive, there is no choice, it's that simple.
"No demons have appeared," Seth's voice interrupted Roland's thoughts, pulling him back to reality. "We're safe for now. What do you think we should do?"
Perhaps it was Roland's outstanding performance that made Seth start asking for his opinion; otherwise, newcomers generally wouldn't have any say at all.
Roland didn't speak, but stood up and wiped the blood off the longsword with a strip of cloth, but the foul stench remained.
His gaze swept around, and suddenly fell on the piece of beast flesh that Austin had thrown away not long ago.
After hesitating for a moment, he walked over and took it in his hand. After staring at it intently for two seconds, faint fluorescent writing began to appear.
【The Flesh and Blood of a "Living Person" (Fake)】
Type: Consumables/Food
Grade: Common (White)
Description: A drop of underground worm blood, a piece of fungus moss from seven days ago, a little bit of human fat... The greatest function of the life potion is to turn "them" into "them," but this piece of flesh and blood has obviously been dripped with a fake life potion, and it is missing a very important ingredient.
Effect: None
Note: This item cannot be extracted.
"As expected, this thing is fake and can't lure ghouls at all."
Upon hearing Roland's voice, Cestston immediately leaned closer, sniffed the flesh and blood in Roland's hand, and said in surprise, "How did you tell? This is no different from what Austin made a couple of days ago."
Roland didn't explain, but instead asked, "How long have you been here? Do you always attract ghouls using this method?"
"Auston arrived two days earlier than you, and he's been here for almost a month now... He also relied on this kind of flesh and blood for the first two days, but it worked very well."
Upon hearing this, Roland frowned slightly, about to say something more, when he suddenly realized something and abruptly turned around.
A faint light gradually approached, and as it drew closer, it became clear that it was two figures emerging from the nearby woods.
One was Austin, who looked rather disheveled, his black robe covered in bits of grass and signs of friction, and his face bearing bruises, as if he had been in a fight.
Following closely behind him was another man holding a staff, but he was wrapped up even more tightly, with his head completely covered by a hood, revealing only a pair of sea-blue eyes.
Seeing that they had completely eliminated the ghouls, Austin seemed a little embarrassed, but that expression quickly turned into enthusiasm: "You've taken care of them all? That's impressive."
Seth stepped forward and said coldly, "Where have you been?"
Roland quietly tossed aside the piece of flesh behind him, also pricking up his ears to hear Austin's explanation.
Unexpectedly, Austin just chuckled, not taking the abandonment of his teammates to heart at all, and pointed to the mage behind him.
"Of course we're going to find backup. I met this guy on my way back to town. With him here, even if demons or ghosts come, there won't be any problems."
Looking for support?
Roland and Seth exchanged a glance, tacitly avoiding dwelling on the topic, and instead turned their attention back to the black-robed mage, carefully examining his attire.
He was about six feet tall, the tallest of the four, but very thin, with his hands clearly showing the outline of his bones. He didn't say a word, just calmly watched them.
What is most eye-catching is the staff in his hand. Although it is only two feet long, it is made of finely textured ironwood. Under the moonlight, it has a matte material texture similar to old bones, exuding an inexplicable chill.
"This person is very strong."
Seth took a half step back and tugged at Roland's sleeve, signaling him to proceed with caution.
Even without the dwarf's prompting, Roland could feel the intense pressure permeating the air, and even the moonlight falling from the sky began to thin.
Keep him calm, then leave quickly.
The thought flashed through Roland's mind, but he quickly adjusted his tone and said, "It's good that you're back. Let's go back to the cabin; it's too cold outside."
Austin was taken aback, seemingly not expecting Roland to answer like that. He turned to look at the mage, but seeing that he had no reaction, he nodded in agreement.
Back in the cabin, the crackling campfire flickered in the cold wind seeping through the cracks in the door, its warm orange glow illuminating the small space but unable to dispel the somber atmosphere.
No one spoke; everyone seemed to have reached a tacit understanding, cautiously maintaining silence, a tense sense of balance hanging in the air.
Roland pressed himself against the corner wall, the closest spot to the wooden door, so he could escape immediately if anything went wrong.
Seth was curled up beside him, already breathing softly, seemingly asleep.
But only Roland, who was facing him, knew that the dwarf was quietly putting his hand into his bag and moving at an imperceptible, slow pace, as if he were doing something.
As for the two mages, they sat cross-legged by the campfire, the shadows of their hoods pressing deeply onto their faces, with only the occasional flickering firelight illuminating Austin's white fingertips from gripping his staff so tightly.
In this atmosphere of silence, waiting, and confrontation, Roland subtly adjusted his gaze, focusing his attention on the iron sword.
Even as he was killing those ghouls, he had already noticed that his new story was already complete.
