Chapter 83 How to Get Something for Nothing
Santosen smiled apologetically as he carefully returned to his seat, feeling a mix of emotions.
What kind of mess is this?!
He merely made a suggestion to the city lord. Whether to adopt it or not is up to you Mogoslor people to decide. Why do you insist on blaming the Balbo people?
Moreover, he was, after all, an envoy of the city-state of Balbo, yet Mogoslor falsely accused him of being a henchman of a chivalrous thief, and imprisoned him in jail. Since yesterday afternoon, he has been relentlessly interrogating prisoners in the next cell, beating them mercilessly.
Santos spent the night in fear, terrified that he would suffer the same torture, and he didn't close his eyes until dawn.
Then someone dragged him into the city, saying that the city lord wanted to see him.
Santosen had thought he would have a chance to clear his name, but he was not taken to the city lord's mansion at all, nor did he see the city lord. Just as he was wondering, a coup broke out in the house.
Santos was terrified, thinking he was going to become a scapegoat, but the people who launched the coup did nothing to him and treated him as an honored guest.
Then came a whole bunch of incomprehensible talk, about cooperating with the rogue, jointly controlling Mogoslor, and how much he admired what Mogoslor had done in Balbo City.
Anyway, after saying all that, the gist of it is that this man who calls himself a "broker" also wants to become a partner of the Robin Hood, just like Santos.
"When did I become a partner of a chivalrous thief?!"
Santos really wanted to shout those words out, but after some careful consideration, he realized that it was better to let the misunderstanding continue.
After all, as a companion of the chivalrous thief, he still has value; but if he is a useless envoy from Balbo City who knows a lot of secrets, then his fate may be rather bad.
So Santos began to use rhetoric to avoid the conversation. No matter what the "broker" said, his answer was always "I'll consider it" or "I need to think about it." When he couldn't keep up with the conversation, Santos made an excuse to go to the bathroom.
Mogosloar is in too much chaos; he needs to find a way to escape.
The broker didn't make things difficult for him and simply had a servant take him to the toilet.
Then, Santos discovered that the toilet at "The Broker" was actually indoors.
"Damn it, I thought I could find a chance to escape."
"You really have a bold idea."
Hearing a second voice coming from the toilet, Santos was so startled that he jumped up. I didn't hold back and jumped down from the ceiling, stepping on him and holding a stick against his head.
Fortunately, the buildings here always have a lot of decorative carvings on their roofs, which allowed me to climb all the way down from the living room ceiling, but it still took me a lot of effort.
"Not bad, Santos, you're quite the show-off."
Santos turned his head slowly, and then realized that it was me talking to him.
"A chivalrous thief? It's you!"
"It's me. You've been walking on the dark too much, you've run into a ghost! Come on, tell me, what have you done in my name?"
I gave Santos a friendly smile and then listened to his explanation. Soon, Santos recounted what had recently happened to him. Although Santos spoke sincerely, he already had zero credibility with me, so I didn't believe him at all.
Santos didn't care about that. After realizing that I wasn't going to hurt him, he mustered up his courage and asked me about the whereabouts of the troubled man.
To be honest, I really don't know where that kid, Kuntun, went.
Previously, when I was kidnapping gangsters everywhere, I tied him up with a few gay perverts and threw him into a small dark room. Apart from occasionally feeding them, I basically didn't care about them and let them develop feelings for each other.
Yesterday evening, I released all the prisoners into the commercial district to create chaos. I vaguely remember that Kun Dun was dragged away by his new friends.
"Don't worry, Kuntun is very happy now. He has made a lot of friends, so you don't need to worry about him."
I gave Santos a thumbs-up, signaling that he should have faith in the difficulties.
Santorion clearly didn't trust me much either, so he pleaded that he hoped to be redeemed from his predicament, and that the city-state of Balbo would grant any request as long as I agreed.
I am somewhat interested in this suggestion, because I do have something I need Santos's help with right now.
"You want me to negotiate with the broker and get him to release the civilians detained in the military camp?"
"Yes, is there a problem?"
"That's possible, but what kind of compensation can you offer the other party? Like some kind of promise or something?"
"no."
"Ah... Sir, this can't really be called negotiation. You need to offer some leverage before I can even begin to negotiate with them!"
"Old Sang, look at me, I'm just a robber. I know absolutely nothing about negotiation! How about this, you think of a way to help me get away with this, after all, that's your forte!"
Santos looked hesitant and extremely troubled, but under my kind gaze, he nodded.
"I will do my best to accomplish this task in order to put Your Highness in a difficult situation."
"Good! As expected of my good friend, you're really capable. In that case, go do me another favor and ask about the desert god's descendants."
"Huh? Your Highness, didn't you say you just wanted me to do something for you?"
"Yes, this is actually the same thing as the one we just talked about, just a different part of the same thing. The one we just talked about was the first stage, and this is the second stage."
"But shouldn't you offer me something in return for this? After all, you want to get information from someone else..."
"Hey, Old Sang, how could you make such a request of me! If I had leverage, would I need your help?"
"But if I have nothing, I can't negotiate with others, I..."
"Don't be discouraged, Old Sang! I believe you can do it!"
After some thought, Santos slowly nodded, indicating that he would try his best.
"Good! You're truly my brother, always loyal! In that case, could you also find out where all the cannons and muskets in the city are kept? If possible, you'd better be able to get me some."
"Sir, do you also have no leverage in this matter?"
"Hey, you're pretty smart. You figured that out. Right, I don't have any leverage, so I'll have to find a way to fool you."
"You overestimate me; I really can't do something like that!"
"The task hasn't even been done yet, how can you say it can't be done! Think of our predicament, think of the old city lord, are you going to let them down?"
Santos looked at me with a complex expression, his eyes filled with tears, and then he began to plead softly.
"My lord, if I accomplish these things, you must keep your promise!"
"Hey, am I the kind of person who doesn't keep their word?"
"Okay, I agree. I will definitely find a way to help you do these things."
"Alright! As expected of my partner, you've got guts! In that case, will you help me again..."
"Stop! Your Excellency! Please don't say any more! If you make any more demands, you can keep Prince Dumbness for yourself!"
