The stream is filled with scattered rocks, which intersect to create a patch of shadow.

The sun was blazing, and the scorching sunlight baked the earth. Once you stepped out of the shade, you would suffer from heatstroke in less than an hour.

The shady spot by the stream was quite cool. Lin Nian got out of the water, roughly wrung out her skirt, and sat in the shade to cool off.

The snowmelt water was crystal clear, with a few small fish swimming by occasionally.

A breeze brushed against her cheek, Lin Nian yawned, and fell asleep leaning against the stream rock.

Lin Nian was awakened by the aroma of roasted chicken.

Lin Nian woke up rubbing his eyes and immediately saw Yin Cheng sitting in front of him, wiping his demon sword.

Lin Nian tiptoed over, and taking advantage of the man's inattention, she leaped over and landed on his back.

Yin Cheng sheathed his knife almost simultaneously. "Be careful, don't drop it."

Lin Nian hugged the man's neck and called out in a sticky voice, "Husband."

"Um?"

Lin Nian just smiled and didn't say anything.

Yin Cheng pinched his wife's cheek. "Are you hungry?"

Lin Nian got up from the man, rubbed his stomach, and stared intently at the roast chicken on the fire beside him. "A little bit."

"Bear with it," Yin Cheng said. "It's not over yet."

Lin Nian stared at the man with a mournful expression.

Yin Cheng suppressed a laugh and, as if by magic, handed over a dark red wild fruit.

"Want to try some?"

Lin Nian took the fruit, wiped it casually on her clothes, and took a bite, quite roughly.

Yin Cheng: "..." Who could tell that my wife is a lady from a prominent family in the capital?

"Never mind," Yin Cheng thought, "I've already washed up anyway."

The fruit is sweet and sour, and tastes quite good.

Lin Nian squinted her eyes. "Delicious!"

"I only saw this one. I'll pick another one for you when I see it again."

This fruit was rare. Yin Cheng searched the forest for a long time but only found a single sapling on the edge of a cliff.

There were seven or eight fruits growing there, but only this one changed color; the others were very pale, so Yin Cheng didn't pick many.

"Mmm." Lin Nian leaned closer to the man and offered him the unbitten side of the lip, "Husband, you should eat some too."

Yin Cheng lowered his head and took a bite. "It looks sweet, but I didn't expect it to be so sour."

Lin Nian took another bite from the spot the man had bitten, chewing and chewing. "It's not sour at all. I think it tastes great."

Yin Cheng respected his wife's tastes.

"Husband, what kind of fruit is this?"

"The locals call it wild amber fruit, but it looks a bit like a black plum to me."

Lin Nian understood; this black plum was definitely something he didn't understand. He didn't ask any more questions and happily finished eating the wild fruit.

The pheasant was quickly roasted. Lin Nian kicked off her shoes, sat by the stream, and tore off a chicken leg to eat while splashing around in the water with her feet.

Every time I go to the countryside with my boyfriend, he makes me roast chicken, and the big, golden, crispy chicken leg is always his.

Lin Nian sometimes secretly rejoiced that he had attended the palace banquet that day, otherwise he would have missed out on a man.

Lin Nian silently shifted his position, moving closer to the man. He leaned on the man's shoulder and said, "Husband."

"What's wrong?"

Lin Nian said hesitantly, "There's something I've always wanted to know... I'm just really curious..."

"What?" Yin Cheng's attention was entirely focused on his wife's fair and tender skin. No wonder his wife was so exquisite; she had no flaws whatsoever!

Lin Nian asked shyly, "How did you choose me from so many guys?"

Yin Cheng said quietly, "You're the prettiest."

"Yeah, right, I don't believe you. Tell me the truth."

If we only consider appearance, he is not even as good as Nangong Cai.

Even though he has deliberately cultivated an aloof and detached air over the years, his striking presence is merely that of a man; very few people can truly remember his appearance.

"She's lithe, fair-skinned, and looks like a little sweet cake," Yin Cheng said. "My brother keeps pressuring me to get married, and I figured since I was going to marry a guy anyway, I might as well find someone I like."

Lin Nian opened her big, watery eyes and said with a hint of resentment, "So it turns out I was just pleasing to the eye."

Yin Cheng weakly protested, "That's not what I meant."

"You're lying." Lin Nian's tone became even more resentful. "What if there had been someone more pleasing to the eye than me back then? Wouldn't you have chosen me?"

Here it comes! Yin Cheng thought to himself, this is bad. Every man's lifelong enemy is his wife's soul-searching question: Do you really love me?

"Wife, how could you have such a thought?" Yin Cheng decided to strike first. "If I hadn't returned to the capital back then, and another man had come to propose to you, would you have agreed?"

"I..." Lin Nian snorted, then quickly realized, "I'm the one questioning you now, you're not allowed to question me back."

Yin Cheng said, "Then I'll marry the one who's more pleasing to the eye."

Lin Nian sadly turned her head away.

Oh no, we've messed up.

"Aren't you silly? What are you thinking about all day long?" Yin Cheng said. "I like Niannian the most. All the handsome young men in the world combined can't compare to Niannian's hair."

Lin Nian looked up, her eyes were a little red.

"You don't... like me at all, do you?"

Yin Cheng immediately panicked, "It's not my wife, why are you crying?" He quickly said, "Of course I love you, I love you to death."

Lin Nian sniffed, and the big chicken leg in her hand suddenly lost its flavor. A tear suddenly fell down her cheek. "But you just said you would marry someone more pleasing to the eye than me... Waaah, you don't love me at all... I'm not important to you at all."

"Who said you're not important? Even if you and my brother fell into the water at the same time, I would save you first."

Even in her grief, Lin Nian didn't forget to prioritize the greater good, saying, "No, we must save His Majesty first."

"You don't need to be so understanding now, honey, don't cry." His wife started to cry, and Yin Cheng suddenly felt like he had committed a terrible crime.

He reflected that he could no longer tease his wife like that.

The snow water couldn't completely wash away the grease on his hands, and fearing he'd soil his wife's clothes, Yin Cheng could only loosely embrace her, saying, "Niannian..."

Before he could finish speaking, Lin Nian suddenly pushed him away and gagged.

"vomit--"

Yin Cheng's first reaction was, "Oh no, the roast chicken isn't cooked through."

"Niannian, are you alright?"

Lin Nian rubbed her chest. "It's nothing, I just felt nauseous for a moment, but I feel much better now."

Could it be that his stomach or intestines are damaged? Otherwise, why would he suddenly start dry heaving?

Yin Cheng thought that he should still ask his brother-in-law to take a look when he got back, just to put his mind at ease.

Lin Nian didn't know what was wrong with her lately, but she always wanted to confirm with the man whether he loved her and how much he loved her.

He knows perfectly well that he is sometimes being unreasonable, but he just can't control his temper.

He reached out and took Yin Cheng's hand apologetically, "Husband, I'm sorry, I shouldn't have been so temperamental."
