Chapter 54 The Old Man in Plain Clothes
The room was small, but the furnishings were exquisite.
A square table stood by the window, on which sat a bronze incense burner. Beside the burner, teacups were still warm, and wisps of smoke rose gently, slowly blending into the moonlight.
The candlelight flickered, and the man in plain clothes stood with his back to the window. Moonlight streamed in from outside, making his hair appear even whiter.
A wealthy-looking man sat before him, leaning forward and asking in a low voice, "Sir, I am thirty-five and still childless. Will I ever have children to care for me in this lifetime?"
The man in plain clothes poured tea and said calmly, "My lord, do not be impatient. Within three years, you will surely have a son, who will be intelligent, filial, and a worthy son."
"Indeed!" The wealthy man nearly stood up, but quickly lowered his voice and repeatedly clasped his hands in thanks, "Thank you, sir, thank you, sir."
"It's not my doing; it's just that the benefactor has been very fortunate. I'm just stating the truth."
The wealthy man was overjoyed, thanked him repeatedly, left some money, and left happily.
The man in plain clothes didn't even glance at the silver. He simply lifted the teapot, and the water flowed steadily into the teacup, where the tea leaves unfurled at the bottom.
Hot air rose from the bowl, mixing with the smoke and swirling into a column of air. The column of air moved on its own without any wind, spinning faster and faster until it exploded with a bang.
The room was filled with mist, the moonlight was obscured by the fog, and everything was hazy and indistinct.
Silence fell. The man in plain clothes lowered his eyes, then suddenly spoke: "Since you're here, why not come out and sit for a while?"
"call--"
The only response he received was a barely audible exhale; wherever the breath passed, the sea of mist dissipated like a receding tide, the candlelight went out, and the room was plunged into darkness.
A pair of clean, white hands reached out from the darkness, picked up the teapot, and poured themselves a cup of tea.
The man in plain clothes straightened up, flicked his knuckles, and sent several copper coins flying like lightning in front of him.
A flash of crimson streaked past, and the fox calmly stuffed the copper coin into his pouch.
"You're an interesting person. You invited me to smell the fragrance, offered me tea, and even gave me money."
"I am Su Yiweng. I was unaware of your presence. I apologize for not welcoming you properly." Su Yiweng bowed respectfully.
"What if you find out and run away?" The fox took a sip of tea, froze, and then secretly spat the bitter liquid back into the cup.
How did you do that?
The old man in plain clothes gave a wry smile: "If I had known you would act so quickly, I should have left yesterday after I sensed the spell had been broken."
"It was that goose that found me..."
"I'm asking you, how did you know that person just now would have a child?"
The old man in plain clothes paused for a moment, then replied slowly, "Because he has accumulated a great deal of good karma."
"Hidden virtue?"
"For some reason, my eyes can see a yellowish aura on living things, sometimes strong, sometimes weak. At first, I didn't know what it was for, but after observing for several months, I discovered that if the color is lustrous, good fortune will follow; if the color is murky and black, everything will go wrong."
"Later, I learned from the original owner's belongings that this energy should be the legendary Yin virtue."
The voice slowly began: "The art of observing qi, also known as qi observation. All things possess qi. By observing the shape, color, direction, and flow of qi, one can determine the state and prosperity of things. The art is divided into three paths: observing the qi of people, observing the qi of the earth, and observing the qi of the sky."
"If one's cultivation is successful, one can master the Ten Radiances Method, observe the auspicious and inauspicious signs around the sun, and discern good fortune and misfortune. One can master the Five Qi Method, observe facial features and virtuous aura, and discern nobility and baseness, wisdom and foolishness. One can observe the life force of mountains and rivers, and discern rise and fall, prosperity and decline."
"That's amazing?" The fox's interest grew even stronger upon hearing this.
"Since that's the case, what do you think of the good deeds I've accumulated?"
The old man in plain clothes carefully examined the fox, and after a moment shook his head: "Your magic is superb, I can only vaguely glimpse a trace of it."
Before the words were finished, the young master before them rippled outwards, his form suddenly transforming into a fox. Its white belly was like snow, its black claws like ink, and its two large, fluffy tails unfurled.
"And now?"
"So you are the Fox Spirit." The old man in plain clothes bowed deeply. "Your virtue is as pure as fine jade, your brilliance is restrained, and your profound virtue is unparalleled in my life."
The fox nodded repeatedly: "That's right, it seems you weren't lying. Tell me something else."
"What would you like to hear, sir?"
Let's start from the beginning.
"In that case, I'll make this brief," the old man in plain clothes said slowly. "I am but a wandering soul, drifting aimlessly through the world every day. I dare not walk during the day, much less approach the human realm."
"I don't know how much time had passed, but I came across a deserted graveyard. Suddenly, on a whim, I saw a corpse lying under the grave, so I followed my instincts and crawled inside."
"I have no memory of this body, but it feels like it was originally my body. At first it was stiff, but gradually I became able to move freely and walk around the world."
"At first, I was trembling with fear, afraid that someone would see through my disguise. But as time went on, I became less timid. Just then, I discovered the special nature of my eyes and learned the original owner's magical technique. I made a living from it and did my best to help others."
The fox interrupted, "How do you keep your body from decaying?"
Seeing the confused look in the old man's eyes, the fox continued to explain, "I know someone who is in the same situation as you, except that he is possessing his own body, but because his body and soul are not in harmony, his physical body continues to decay."
The fox tried using its ability to absorb energy and incense, but neither worked on Shen Erlang. Even the abbot's talisman could only temporarily suppress the attack. Frustrated, everyone assumed that the situation was due to the influence of the peach god's peach power.
They placed Shen Erlang in an ice cellar to sleep, using talismans to slow down his decay.
Da Liu was there too; he nestled in Erlang's arms and hibernated with Erlang.
After listening, the old man in plain clothes pondered for a moment before continuing, "There is a record of this in the book left by my predecessor, which may be useful."
"How come your book has everything?"
The fox calmly extended its paw, as if it were perfectly natural: "Let the fox see your book."
Upon hearing this, the old man in plain clothes carefully took out a roll of parchment from his bag, unwrapped it layer by layer, revealing a book. The edges of the pages were slightly curled, and the paper was yellowed, indicating that it was quite old, but it was still well preserved.
The fox took the book. It had quite a few pages, over a hundred in total. The fox stared intently at the pages, scanning them from left to right and top to bottom, then turning the page, scanning again, and turning the page once more. Each page was covered in the blink of an eye.
"Smoke-repelling method..."
"The coin toss method..."
"The Three Arts of Soul Soothing..."
The fox continued flipping through the pages, then suddenly paused, and haphazardly flipped over the remaining pages.
"How come there are only three spells? The fox read them all in one go." The fox returned the book.
The old man in plain clothes reached out and took the book, expressing his sincere admiration: "As expected of a fox spirit, I spent several years traveling around and asking others for advice before I could barely understand it and extract three spells from these thousands of words. The fox spirit read the book upside down for a short while and understood it all."
The fox nodded smugly, then suddenly realized: "Books have front and back?"
