Chapter 41 Siege
"Go!" Chang Sheng chanted a spell, and the dark, surging tide of ghosts rushed forward, transforming into a black wind that swept with mournful shrieks as it crashed into the city wall.
The guards stood ready, their expressions solemn, yet none of them panicked. A lamp stood beside them, its wick flickering.
The demon at the forefront stretched out its claws, a sinister grin on its face, as if it could already see the screams of humans.
"Sizzle."
With a scorching sound, it crashed headlong into a warm yellow halo, letting out a scream. But the ghost behind it showed no fear, continuing to ram and claw at it frantically.
Ignoring the danger on their faces, the guards stared intently into the distance, their heavy footsteps making the ground tremble.
The earth and stone golems surged out of the darkness, pounding into the ground and kicking up dust.
The commander raised his hand and shouted, "Draw your bows! Nock your arrows!"
"Varicocele!"
Upon hearing the shout, the archers sprang into action, yelling in unison. They supported the bow with their left hands, hooked the arrow's fletching with their right fingertips, and pulled the bowstring taut back.
"Hesitation!"
The full moon shone through thin clouds, casting its gentle light.
A faint white light appeared on the tip of the arrow, like twinkling stars.
"put!"
The guards simultaneously released their grip, and a dense rain of arrows pierced through the darkness and dust, precisely striking the puppet's body.
The arrow was incredibly powerful, piercing right through their surface and embedding itself in their bodies along with the fletching. The silver light exploded, and the earth and rocks collapsed.
The puppet in the front row paused, staggered forward two steps, and knelt on the ground. The puppets behind it didn't care, forcefully pushing aside their companions and rushing out over the gravel.
This is the Five Star Guardian of the Cloud Temple, who protects the monks. No profound cultivation is required; simply reciting the star names will grant blessings and make one unafraid of swords.
However, since they lack physical strength and only possess vital energy, they cannot invoke the names of stars. Instead, they call out the names of their weapons, and with the help of the fox spirit drawing upon the moonlight, they can achieve remarkable results.
While the previous garrison was firing arrows, another group of garrison soldiers behind them had already drawn their bows and were holding their breath, ready to take over as soon as their comrades in front were exhausted. The moonlight shone on them, and the rain of arrows continued without ceasing.
Chang Sheng's face was grave as he gripped the jade pendant tightly. The tide of ghosts grew increasingly frenzied, charging forward relentlessly regardless of casualties. The firelight flickered in the eerie wind, its flames gradually weakening.
A figure suddenly darted out of the shadows, slender and covered in scales. Moonlight shone on the scales, creating a silvery-white effect.
Its body was as thick as a barrel, and with a flick of its long tail, it lashed out and shattered the ghost's form.
Then it bent its neck and instantly wrapped it around several ghosts. With all its might, it tightened its body and, accompanied by the ghosts' screams, twisted them into wisps of black smoke, which dissipated into the air.
It raised its head and opened its blood-red maw, intimidating the surrounding ghosts. Its exterior was imposing, but its heart was filled with unease.
"Fox, your spell must work! Go for it, Big Willow, you can do it! Just think of it as dancing, only with more effort."
It took a deep breath, encouraged itself, and then flipped over and rushed out, moving freely through the ghost tide.
Seeing that a frontal assault was unsuccessful, the Yin Ghosts secretly spun off a portion of their forces to other directions. Due to limited manpower, there were not many guards stationed on the east and west sides, apart from the two main gates.
They excitedly rushed in, when suddenly they heard a buzzing sound. A beautiful young woman of about sixteen, her face filled with resentment, flew out from beneath the city walls. She was surrounded by a dense swarm of bees, their stingers gleaming silver.
She gently raised her hand, and the bees swarmed up like a tide, their stingers piercing the ghost's body before quickly pulling them out, leaving behind a wisp of black mist.
Since the ghosts have no physical form, they are a perfect opponent for the bees to display their power.
Although there are many ghosts, the bees are even more numerous. For this mission, the queen bee has migrated the entire kingdom here, and now everyone is ready to fight.
A few of the more clever ghosts quietly retreated, slipping into the soil. Since they were already formless, why should they be bound by common sense?
They nimbly traversed underground, and suddenly, an irregular, winding, and interconnected passage appeared before their eyes.
They froze, not even having time to react, before being lifted up by a pair of large hands.
"Well, you cowardly rats, how dare you bully a weak woman like me!" The burly, dark-skinned woman slapped the ghosts repeatedly, sending black mist flying everywhere.
A sliver of cloud parted, and the moonlight gradually brightened, illuminating the entire earth.
At the city gate, the puppets continued their relentless charge, only a hundred paces from the gate.
The guards on the city wall gradually slowed down their bow draw. Their arms ached, their hands were swollen and red, their fingertips were raw and bleeding, and blood dripped down the bowstrings and spread on the ground.
Drawing an arrow, nocking an arrow.
Draw the bow and release the arrow.
No one stopped; the chanting never ceased.
"Boom—"
The city gate trembled violently, and the guards behind it rushed forward, using their shoulders to brace the gate. The puppets outside swung their giant axes, using the momentum of their charge to smash the gate, sending splinters flying.
The city gate creaked, and the guards groaned in unison, their feet planted firmly on the ground, none retreating. The puppets continued their relentless attack, hacking and slashing, some even slamming clods of earth from their fallen comrades against the gate.
The archers did not retreat; they continued to shoot from above, and as the puppets in front fell, the puppets behind immediately took their place, the force layer upon layer.
The crossbeam broke in two, but the city gate was breached. The guards lost their balance and fell backward.
"The first wife!"
"General!"
The guards abandoned the broken wood, drew their swords and halberds, and charged towards the puppet. Some guards were hit in the chest and sent flying. Although the magic weakened the enemy's attacks, they only suffered superficial wounds, but they were still unable to get up for a while.
Chang Sheng stared blankly, somewhat bewildered as to how things had escalated to this point. It should have been a calculated, surprise attack, a swift and effortless victory, but how had it turned into this reckless, brute-force assault?
Admittedly, it was gratifying to overwhelm them with such a ruthless method and watch mortals struggle helplessly despite their best efforts. However, those evil spirits were his core group, stepping stones for his further advancement, and now their numbers were unknown.
He cursed under his breath, then thought to himself, "Stupid thing, wait..."
"Well done."
A calm voice suddenly rang out, and Chang Sheng stiffened. Without hesitation, he turned around, knelt on one knee, and presented the jade pendant.
"Your subordinate is incompetent."
"It's alright." The jade pendant flew into the incense master's hand on its own. "Since you have completed your task, you cannot be considered incompetent."
"As for those minor damages, they are nothing. Once I detonate the evil energy and transform this place into a celestial realm, I will be able to generate several times more Yin ghosts than we have now, making up for these losses will be a piece of cake."
"You bastard! You blame me for the loss of the Yin ghosts, but you claim it's your skill to create new ones."
"Step back. Just stand aside and watch. Next, I will personally demonstrate to you what the methods of an immortal are."
