Chapter 57 The Return Journey
Rosen pushed open the police station door; it was already late at night.
But one car was parked in front of the police station.
The black Chevrolet Equinox was a bit old, but very clean, and there were a few people standing next to it.
Morris stood at the front; this elderly black man with a full head of white hair was wearing a suit with his collar neatly tied.
Upon seeing Rosen emerge, he didn't immediately rush to greet him, but instead gave a slight bow and lightly pounded his chest with his right hand—
That's the Iron Claw Gang's etiquette.
Several men in overalls behind him also bowed in unison.
Rosen walked down the steps.
Morris then stepped forward, his gaze lingering on Rosen's pale face for a few seconds.
"Father," Maurice said softly, "there are blankets, hot water, and some food in the carriage."
Rosen nodded without saying anything.
He walked to the car and opened the door.
In the back seat, Caesar leaned against the window, his body wrapped in bandages. He grinned at him and said, "Father, you've finally come out. I thought those policemen were going to detain you as a mascot."
In the passenger seat, Wang Ling had his eyes closed as if he were resting, while Gabak huddled in the corner. Upon seeing Rosen, he immediately sat up straight.
Cade sat in the driver's seat, a cigarette dangling from his lips. He glanced back at Rosen, said nothing, and simply nodded.
Rosen got into the back seat and closed the car door.
"Let's go," he said.
Cade started the engine, and the Equinox slowly drove away from the police station.
Rosen leaned back in his chair, wrapped in the blanket Morris handed him, holding a cup of hot water in his hands.
Rosen spoke:
"What about the survivors?"
Morris turned around from the passenger seat: "At the hospital, the police said I need to be observed, treated, and receive psychological counseling. I left two of my brothers outside to keep watch, and they'll send back any news as soon as possible."
Rosen nodded.
"What about the media?"
Morris paused for a second: "It's in an uproar."
He paused, then continued:
"The explosion shook half the city. Firefighters, police, and reporters all rushed over there. When we arrived, there were already seven or eight media outlets squatting outside the police cordon. They filmed the survivors being rescued, they filmed—"
He paused, seemingly choosing his words carefully: "The scars on their bodies."
Rosen did not speak.
Morris continued:
"There are all sorts of theories circulating now. Some say it was a gas pipeline explosion, some say it was a cult sacrifice, and some say it was a terrorist attack. But no matter what the theory is, the survivors are the focus."
He looked at Rosen:
"The police have blocked the news and haven't revealed anything about you yet, but that's only temporary. Right now, nobody knows what the survivors will say to the media."
Cade glanced at Rosen in the rearview mirror and suddenly spoke:
"Did those police officers give you any trouble?"
Rosen shook his head.
"No," he said. "They were quite cooperative."
Cade stared at his reflection in the rearview mirror for a few seconds, then looked away.
He didn't believe it. In that crappy place like the American police station, he was a Chinese person, and a yellow-skinned person who wasn't from Dongda University. How could he not be harassed?
But he didn't ask any further questions.
The car traveled through the night, passing through street after street.
The Ronnie community is getting closer.
He suddenly remembered what he had said.
"If there is no God in this world—then I am God."
He opened his eyes, a bitter smile tugging at the corner of his mouth.
For someone whose faith in a deity is based on a religious sect to say such a thing.
God knows what his followers think.
He subconsciously glanced at the people in the car.
Caesar leaned back in the back seat, already snoring softly. The others were mostly resting too; everyone was tired.
These people—
What was their reaction when they heard that sentence?
Rosen recalled that scene.
They did not question it, nor did they hesitate.
Rosen closed his eyes and rested his head against the car window.
Forget it.
forget about it.
The Equinox stopped in front of a bungalow.
Rosen pushed open the car door, and as soon as his feet touched the ground, Caesar caught him.
"Holy Father—"
"It's nothing." Rosen waved his hand; he was much better now. "You guys go back and rest. We can talk about it tomorrow."
Caesar wanted to say something more, but seeing Rosen's look, he swallowed his words.
Morris got out of the passenger seat, walked up to Rosen, and whispered:
"Father, I will keep an eye on the survivors' situation, and I will also try to handle things with the media. You should get some rest."
Rosen nodded.
He watched the Equinox disappear into the night, then turned and pushed open the door.
The room was very quiet.
Rosen walked into the bedroom without turning on the light. He leaned against the wall, slowly slid down, and buried his face in his hands.
Silent for a long time.
Then he exhaled.
A very long breath.
"call--"
This operation resulted in the development of less than 15% of the map.
In the center of the map alone, he saw at least five or six treasure chests. That underground transfer station was so huge, with so many branching paths and so many rooms—
If you search slowly, how much stuff can you find?
Even if we don't have many blue items, let's at least make one more purple item. After all, the Iron Claw Token we had last time was obtained from Leonard's safe.
pity.
Rosen gave a wry smile.
He acted on impulse.
But he doesn't regret it.
If he had to choose again, he would still stay.
He rubbed his temples, temporarily putting those thoughts out of his mind.
Anyway, let's first calculate how much stuff we got this time.
A thought suddenly occurred to him.
A system notification appeared:
[Should the shelter address be changed?]
(Note: Shelter addresses can only be changed once every 30 days, please choose carefully.)
Rosen selected "confirm".
Soon, a virtual portal appeared in front of him.
To an outsider, there was nothing there. But Rosen knew it was the door to the shelter.
He stood up, pushed open the door, and went inside.
As his body completely disappeared into the door, the door slowly closed behind him and vanished without a trace.
Push open the iron gate.
I walked into the empty room.
Rosen stood in the center, a thought forming in his mind—
"Activate the shelter feature."
As soon as he finished speaking, several pieces of equipment, including a bed, a computer desk, and a large storage cabinet, appeared out of thin air in the corner of the previously empty basement.
Rosen plopped down on the bed and collapsed onto the floor.
He stared at the ceiling, lost in thought for a few seconds.
Then he leaped up.
It's not over yet.
He walked to the terminal and turned on the screen.
The interface lights up, displaying the familiar chat list.
The topmost avatar, "Director," is the person who gave him his first task: unlocking the exchange.
Rosen took a deep breath, opened the dialog box, and clicked "Start Task".
A progress bar pops up on the screen.
Connecting...
Connection successful.
next second.
A beam of light was projected from the terminal and condensed in front of Rosen.
It was a human figure.
He was tall and wore a military uniform from an unknown country. He had a thick beard, a deep-set face, and typical Western features. His eyes were gray.
