Marvel: I am Iron Man
Chapter 7 Fury's Sleepless Night
The stealth armor appeared out of thin air on the rooftop. Nick Fury turned around, glanced at the silver armor, and frowned slightly: "Stark."
"Sorry, but Mr. Stark isn't home right now." The Iron Man armor tilted its head, and a voice came from the loudspeaker, "I'm Mr. Stark's bodyguard. You can talk to me directly if you need anything."
According to superhero comic book tradition, protagonists generally don't easily reveal their hidden identities. Although Iron Man broke with tradition by revealing his identity from the very first movie, this wasn't the case in the early Iron Man comics.
In the early comics, the traditional Tony Stark never publicly revealed that he was Iron Man. Of course, as a superhero, Iron Man is constantly flying around the world fighting with hundreds of Stark's proprietary technologies, so even if Stark doesn't admit it, it's obvious to anyone that this armor is inextricably linked to the Stark family.
So in the comics, Tony simply claims that Iron Man is his hired bodyguard. Although the armor does indeed use Stark technology, the identity of the wearer is never revealed.
There are rumors that it's a retired S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, while others say it's never been just one person, but rather an entire team that takes turns wearing the uniform.
But in any case, Iron Man's true identity has always been a mystery. For a long time, even the Avengers themselves did not know that the person wearing Iron Man's suit was their biggest benefactor, Tony Stark himself.
Tony felt that this approach would be safer for him than the self-destruction seen in the movies, so he planned to refer to the method used by Iron Man in the comics.
Nick Fury, on the other hand, seemed unconvinced: "We all know it's you inside the armor, Stark. Only your arrogant head can fit into this helmet, and I doubt you'd allow anyone else to wear this suit."
Tony had long suspected that the bodyguard's story wouldn't fool S.H.I.E.L.D., since Tony Stark had been under S.H.I.E.L.D.'s close watch ever since he broke out of the cave wearing the Mark I.E.L.D.
It doesn't matter, whether the other party believes it or not is their business, he just continues his act.
"Please don't speak ill of Mr. Stark, Director Fury," Tony said matter-of-factly.
"Fine, whatever you like."
Fury didn't dwell on exposing the other person's identity, but instead asked...
"How did you find this place? You followed Natasha? That's no easy feat. As far as I know, no one has ever successfully followed her before."
Tony: "There's always a first time for everything, isn't there?"
It's impossible to track her using conventional methods, after all, Natasha is one of the world's top super agents, and counter-tracking is a fundamental skill for her.
While he may be an amateur when it comes to tracking Tony, he's a global leader when it comes to high technology.
Natasha was bitten by a mosquito not far from his villa.
It was summer, the peak season for mosquitoes. Stark's estate was by the sea, and the area was teeming with flying insects; getting bitten was perfectly normal and unlikely to raise any alarm.
But the mosquito that bit her wasn't an ordinary one; it was an electronic flying mosquito that Tony had deployed around the villa beforehand—essentially a miniature drone. It could monitor the area around the villa and also silently implant nanotrackers into any intruders.
Tony spent some time researching it. At this stage, Marvel's nanotechnology isn't as advanced as it is in later movies, so developing armor, heavy weapons, and the freely deformable Mark 3 nanotech armor like in Avengers: Infinity War is still a long way off.
However, if it's just about inserting a tracker that's effective for 24 hours into the target blood vessel, that level of capability is entirely achievable.
This is also considered high technology, and there are only a handful of people in the world, including Tony, who can make something like this. So even the most experienced and seasoned agent would be helpless against this technology, which she had never even heard of before.
But Tony, of course, couldn't reveal such trade secrets, so he immediately changed the subject: "Mr. Stark is very curious, is S.H.I.E.L.D.'s daily mission simply to spy on and spy on excellent taxpayers? Or do you just not have anything else to do?"
"You've become my problem, Stark," Fury said irritably. "I have far more important problems to deal with in the Southwest than you. But I have to keep you alive, and by the way, you're welcome."
Fury turned around and looked the armored figure up and down, as if trying to see Tony's face through the cold visor.
"Also, have you recently started experiencing some health problems, Mr. Stark?" Fury asked.
"Yes, Mr. Stark has also expressed his willingness to discuss this in detail with you." Tony paused, then emphasized, "especially regarding the legacy that his father, Mr. Howard Stark, left with S.H.I.E.L.D.."
Fury remained outwardly calm, but inwardly he was secretly taken aback.
He sent Natasha to monitor Tony, get close to him to assess and observe him, and ultimately planned to return the data Howard left in S.H.I.E.L.D. to Tony.
Because it originally belonged to Tony, and it could only be of value in Tony's hands.
Howard Stark had already discovered a way to find new elements in the last century, which he called "the key to unlocking the door to the new century."
Unfortunately, limited by the era he lived in and the overall level of technology at the time, Howard Stark did not have enough technology or tools to extract the new element he discovered.
So he left these things with S.H.I.E.L.D., and left a video message for his son Tony Stark, instructing him that these things must be handed over to Tony when the time is right. Only Tony has the wisdom and technology to complete the work he left unfinished.
However, these should all be classified information by S.H.I.E.L.D.
Although Fury was planning to tell Tony these things, he hadn't said them yet.
How did they find out?
Fury had sharp eyes, but those eyes, which were adept at capturing micro-expressions and seeing through anyone's heart, were completely useless against the silver-white iron lump in front of him.
Could it be that Stark has an informant within S.H.I.E.L.D.?
Fritz pondered for a few seconds, temporarily suppressing his doubts: "Alright. Then... tell your arrogant boss to wait at home. Looks like we need to have a serious talk."
Fritz paused, then emphasized, "No fancy armor."
Since the conversation had progressed to this point, and the time was ripe, Fury thought for a moment. He had originally planned to have a good talk with this troubled youth sooner or later anyway, so he figured he might as well have someone bring Howard's information over today.
He was also getting tired of talking to this guy who was pretending to be stupid through his armor like this.
"Okay, I promise to deliver your message, Director Fury." Iron Man said, and ripples appeared on his armor again as he returned to invisibility. "Mr. Stark is already waiting for you at home. You know the address."
After saying that, he disappeared.
Nick Fury sighed.
Tonight is truly a sleepless night.
