Chapter 4 : [The Skull Collector]
"Is this the place you brought me to?"
Upon arriving at their destination, Lynn felt somewhat embarrassed listening to Frank's complaints.
The two stopped in front of the pizza shop.
The signboard was half damaged, and all that remained of "Joey's PIZZA" was "Joey's P ZA," creaking in the night wind, not to mention the rats and cockroaches scurrying around on the ground.
"It's better than getting shot in the street and being questioned by the police!" Lynn pushed open the creaking shop door, cursing under his breath.
This scene feels so desolate!
Now look what's happened, we don't even have a place to live!
He immediately set the goal of "making money" to at least escape Queens, a poor neighborhood, and improve his standard of living.
At the very least, we need a stable place to settle down, right?
"Sigh..." Lynn sighed deeply.
Inside the shop, there were moldy walls and cardboard boxes piled up at the base of the walls, not to mention the homeless people huddled together in twos and threes on one side, emitting a foul odor.
Behind the counter, an old man with droopy eyelids didn't even look up: "Two of you?"
"The one in the corner."
The old man raised his eyelids, his cloudy gaze sweeping over the two of them: "Signature pizza, 28 minutes. Coffee, help yourself, the pot's over there, but the cups might not be clean."
"Thanks."
The two walked to a corner.
Lynn noticed the sponge sticking out of the chair, stained with suspicious dirt, and very naturally switched places with Frank!
Frank seemed not to notice, simply placing the sports bag containing the rifle parts at his feet, in a spot where he could grab it instantly without tripping over it.
His gaze, like radar, began scanning every corner of the store and the street outside the window.
Lynn didn't disturb him. He went to pour two cups of coffee that looked like machine oil. When he came back, he glanced at Frank's still tense profile and pushed the cups towards him.
He sighed inwardly.
Frank truly lives up to his reputation as a man who excels in every aspect; among ordinary humans, he is indeed a 'perfect' existence.
With this person around, it can effectively make up for my current shortcomings, such as reconnaissance and counter-reconnaissance, and information gathering.
Even though he was once a "mercenary", he was definitely not as good as a "level 10 agent" personally evaluated by Nick Fury. Even Black Widow and Hawkeye were only level 9 agents.
Lynn was well aware of this.
Before Frank receives full enhancement from the system's runes, his abilities and personality will be a great asset.
"Relax, Frank." Lynn's voice wasn't loud, but it reached Frank's ears clearly.
"We should be fine for the time being, but... I guess you still have many questions to ask?"
Frank turned his gaze from the window to Lynn's face, his eyes sharp as knives: "Who exactly are you?"
"Why did you come to me? You clearly have the strength to crush those assassins, there's no need for you to drag me, this 'burden,' along."
Upon hearing the last two words, Lynn couldn't help but chuckle.
"A burden? You're hardly a burden."
"I can tell you with absolute certainty that I know a lot about you, such as..."
"Why did you end up like this? Why did you become a brutal executioner? And why did you turn out this way?"
The words had barely left his mouth.
The atmosphere instantly plummeted to freezing point.
Frank's fingers unconsciously curled up, and the veins on the back of his hand bulged slightly, as if something had been touched. His eyes were already fixed on Lynn indifferently.
"Sigh... You don't need to look at me like that. You know in your heart that you are no match for me, don't you?"
"Relax a little."
Lynn picked up the cup of coffee, which was as black as engine oil, took a sip, and frowned at the bitter taste. This calm attitude immediately calmed Frank down.
He was stubborn, but he wasn't a fool.
Seeing this, Lynn put down his cup and tapped the table lightly with his fingertips. "I know about your past, Frank, whose real name is Frank Cassel, and about Maria, Lisa, and little Frank."
"But the people you killed were meaningless."
"I understand why you swung the knife, Frank."
"But the lives of those street thugs can't fill the emptiness in your heart. Your anger, your training, should be reserved for those who truly deserve it, like... the people who set the rules of the streets."
Frank's pupils contracted sharply, his hands clenched tightly, and he stared intently at Lynn. "You investigated me?"
"It's hardly an investigation," Lynn said, shrugging, his tone as indifferent as if he were talking about something trivial.
"I'm just showing you that I know a lot, like I know more about Kingpin and the Hand."
"Like Kingpin's three henchmen, Bullseye, Tombstone, and Mr. Negative, these are the people you should be targeting."
"How do you know all this?" Frank's voice was devoid of emotion, but the question itself indicated his seriousness.
"I have my own channels," Lynn said with a frank smile, offering no explanation.
Frank then leaned forward slightly, a posture one would adopt when facing an enemy, and said, "Then why should I trust you?"
"It's very simple."
"Because I need you right now, just as you need me." Lynn put down her cup and met his gaze calmly.
"And you have nothing that I would want to deceive."
"I'm an outsider, and I need a guide who knows this place well, someone who can keep an eye on those eyes in the shadows for me, and you are the most suitable candidate."
"Our goal is the same: to make Kingpin and his henchmen pay the price. That's enough."
"Cooperation is beneficial to both of us."
He paused, then added, "Of course, even if you really want to do something outrageous..."
"For example, if one day in the future you feel that I have gone astray, or that I have become a target to be eliminated... I trust your judgment and respect your ability to carry it out."
"Isn't this the best insurance policy between us?"
Frank stared at Lynn for a long time before his tense shoulders slowly relaxed.
He picked up his coffee, tilted his head back, and took a big gulp. The bitter taste made him cough a few times, but it also dissipated most of his wariness.
"Damn it!"
Frank cursed under his breath, but a faint smile played on his lips. "You bastard, you're so honest it's annoying."
At this moment, Lynn breathed a slight sigh of relief, finally having this "tool" by his side.
His gaze then fell upon the system's prompts.
