1836: I Became a Literary Giant in Great Britain
Chapter 43 How did you end up here?
Mrs. Green's voice was sharp and sarcastic, full of disdain.
Although she didn't publish the article in the London Express, that doesn't stop her from looking down on Michelle.
He's just a bookworm, after all. How can he compare to my nephew?
"I heard he couldn't even afford tuition and was expelled from school a long time ago. What kind of articles could someone like that write? Are you kidding me by saying it was published in the London Express?"
The landlady's face darkened.
Although she frequently chased Michelle for rent, she still had a certain fondness for the only university student in the apartment. Her late husband was a graduate of the University of London. In a way, he was Michelle's classmate, otherwise Michelle wouldn't have been so far behind on rent.
"He said it himself, and he even used the royalties to pay off his rent."
"How much money could that be? A few pence?" Mrs. Green persisted.
"My nephew Malfoy, the editor paid him a whole pound for that one article! That's a real writer!"
Mr. Hansen, who was standing to the side, couldn't stand it anymore. He cleared his throat and tried to smooth things over.
"Mrs. Green, Mr. Michel is, after all, a university graduate; it's normal for him to have some talent. Perhaps..."
"What's normal?" Mrs. Green immediately pointed her gun at him.
"Mr. Hansen, don't be fooled by his appearance. These days, there are plenty of college students who are all talk and no action. If he were truly capable, how could he have ended up like this?"
"My nephew Malfoy will be here soon. He's been helping out at the London Express lately. You'll know for sure once you ask him."
Mrs. Green was full of confidence, as if she could already see Michelle's embarrassed look when she was exposed.
Just as the atmosphere at the dinner table was becoming increasingly tense, footsteps came from the stairs.
Michelle got down.
He just wanted to get some water, but he didn't expect to stumble upon such a scene.
All eyes in the living room instantly turned to him.
You guys keep talking, why are you looking at me?
Facing the gazes of everyone, Michelle couldn't help but feel a little embarrassed.
Mrs. Green's eyes lit up when she saw Michelle, as if she had found an opportunity to expose the lie on the spot.
After all, proving that Michelle was lying would demonstrate his nephew's competence.
What is your social standing that allows you to sit at the same table as my nephew?
She immediately stood up, wearing a fake smile, and blocked Michelle's path.
"Oh, isn't this our great writer, Mr. Michel? Perfect timing, we were just talking about you."
Michelle stopped and nodded politely.
"Mrs. Green, Mr. Hansen, Mrs. Marshall."
He glanced at the tea and newspaper on the table and roughly guessed what had happened.
Is it chirping at me...?
"Mr. Michel, I just heard from Mrs. Marshall that you are also writing articles for the London Express?" Mrs. Green asked bluntly, her tone questioning.
Here it comes, it's definitely chirping at me.
Michelle didn't want to argue about this, so she simply answered calmly.
"Yes, I've managed to publish a few."
However, to Mrs. Green, his modesty sounded like guilt and a cover-up.
"How many?" Mrs. Green's tone immediately rose a few decibels.
"Mr. Michel, boasting is no good habit. My nephew Malfoy, such a talented man, has only published one article. You, a dropout, can publish several in one go?"
She picked up the newspaper from the table and waved it in front of Michelle.
"Look at this! This is real writing! My nephew even got editor Michael's approval! What about you? What's the title of your article? Which issue was it published in? Tell us and let us all see!"
Good grief, I've been trying to be low-key, and they still manage to attack me head-on?
When will this old man ever stop?
Faced with Mrs. Green's relentless questioning, Michelle frowned.
He didn't want to show off, nor did he want to lower himself to the level of such people. After all, one shouldn't flaunt wealth, and his little wooden door to the attic couldn't withstand any damage.
"They're just some trivial little articles."
"A trivial little article?" Mrs. Green sneered.
"I think it's utterly unacceptable! Mrs. Marshall, you see? He's lying! A liar!"
The landlady's face also turned somewhat unpleasant; she began to doubt whether she had truly been deceived by Michelle.
Emily hid behind her mother, looking timidly at Michelle, her little face full of worry.
Damn it, you're really asking for it.
Michelle couldn't hold back any longer and wanted to give this old man a good beating.
"Bang bang bang"
Just then, there was a knock on the apartment door.
"I'll go open the door."
The landlady took the opportunity to escape the awkward situation and got up to walk towards the door.
The door opened, and standing in the doorway was a young man wearing an ill-fitting coat but with his hair slicked back and shiny.
He held a cloth bag in his hand, and a hint of arrogance appeared on his face.
"Auntie, I'm here! I've brought you what you asked for!"
The young man was none other than Malfoy, the talented nephew Mrs. Green had mentioned.
"Oh, my dear nephew, you've finally arrived!"
Mrs. Green immediately went to greet him, lifting her skirt and taking his arm affectionately, then gave Michel a defiant glance.
She pulled Malfoy to the front of the crowd and loudly introduced him: "Come, let me introduce you all, this is my nephew, Malfoy! A contributing writer for the London Express!"
Malfoy enjoyed being the center of attention. He nodded reservedly to everyone and glanced around the living room.
His smile froze the moment his gaze fell on Michelle, who was standing at the top of the stairs.
His eyes widened and his mouth was slightly open, his expression as if he had seen a ghost in broad daylight.
Mrs. Green, however, seemed oblivious to Malfoy's unusual behavior.
She scoffed and looked at Michelle on the stairs.
"It's quite a coincidence, this Mr. Michel said he also writes for the London Express. Malfoy, do you know him?"
Malfoy did not answer his aunt's question.
He seemed not to hear anything, and froze on the spot.
The next second, Malfoy did something that left everyone present speechless.
He shook off Mrs. Green's hand, strode over to Michelle, and then bowed deeply.
"Mr. Michel! You...how did you get here?!"
