94: From Technological Warfare to Space Empire
Chapter 39, from the 2020 Journal of Navigation, discusses the technological breakthroughs.
When the dormitory door was pushed open, Lin Yu was fast asleep.
More than 40 consecutive hours of intense coding and mental exhaustion left him feeling extremely tired even when he was woken up.
Commander Hou's voice carried an unquestionable authority: "Xiao Yu, wake up. We need your skills right now."
Lin Yu rubbed his eyes and sat up; the bloodshot in his eyes had mostly subsided.
"What's wrong with Uncle Hou?"
Commander Hou first put on a serious face:
"What follows will require you to sign a confidentiality agreement, after which you cannot disclose any information to anyone."
He then revealed the details.
"During the Bosnian Civil War, Serb mortars were hidden in the peace zone. Our personnel investigated and found that their targets were not the opposing military... but civilians."
"Our people only placed location beacons, but the GPS error is too large to pinpoint their real-time location!"
Commander Hou slapped a telegram on the headboard.
"If they really do that, not only will innocent people die, but BY will also use the name of pacifism to intervene and expand its own power. At that time, the entire Balkan Peninsula will be in chaos."
"Originally, after HY disbanded, BY also lost its reason for existence, but now they not only don't want to disband, but also want to further expand their power."
"We in the Third World need time."
"Please, Lin Yu, we need your skills right now!"
Upon hearing this, Lin Yu's drowsiness instantly dissipated by more than half.
He had personally experienced the consequences of the eastward expansion. Not to mention the incident at the Yugoslavian embassy in 99, it was an unforgettable pain in his heart.
Bosnia and Herzegovina... was one of the six republics that emerged from the breakup of Yugoslavia, all located in the Balkans.
He picked up the telegram, glanced at it, and added more information.
All of the things Chief Hou said were crucial intelligence.
"Do their trucks circle the Milyazka River at noon?"
"Uncle Hou, let's go! Let's go to the conference room and find the supercomputer right now!"
Lin Yu hurriedly put on his shoes and changed his clothes, not caring whether he put them on backwards or not, and ran with Chief Hou to the conference room.
Upon entering the conference room, many of the professors were still kept in the dark.
"An error exceeding 300 meters? What kind of signal is this? Didn't Xiaoyu's algorithm reduce GPS error to within 1 meter?"
"The location of our surroundings is indeed accurate."
As soon as Lin Yu entered the conference room, he saw that the blackboard was covered with the number of times the calibration had failed, as recorded by the professors.
Chief Hou followed closely behind, explaining as he spoke:
"The professors tried to correct it with your filtering algorithm, but they could only reduce the error to 100 meters at most, and the positioning was still inaccurate."
"The signal delay is also exceptionally large."
Chief Hou gave Lin Yu a wink, and Lin Yu already understood that it was a signal from Seraphim when he heard the professors say they didn't know the source of the signal. Chief Hou had only told him about it.
Upon seeing Lin Yu enter, a group of professors gathered around him.
"Xiaoyu, what exactly happened? Do you have any ideas?"
Lin Yu knew time was of the essence and didn't have time to explain in detail to the professor, only saying:
"I understand now, teach me how to do it."
He knew that the signal error was due to the terrain of the Balkan Peninsula and the interference between multiple radio stations on the battlefield.
However, later generations have developed algorithms to address this type of signal.
Lin Yu sat in front of the supercomputer, surrounded by more than 30 professors, all holding their breath.
"I need the raw GPS data streams from base stations in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou. After synchronizing the timestamps, the error cannot exceed 0.1 seconds."
Lin Yu spoke as he typed on the keyboard, his fingers flying across the DOS command-line interface.
Chief Engineer Lin immediately gave the order:
"Immediately contact the three major tracking and control stations and establish a dedicated transportation line!"
Lin Yu didn't even look up, and directly refuted:
"Dedicated lines are too slow, use satellite relay!"
"We don't have many of our own communication satellites, but they are enough to transmit data streams."
Professor Song gasped in shock.
"Xiaoyu, there's a delay in the satellite relay..."
"I know, that's why algorithmic compensation is needed."
Lin Yu pulled up the three-location signal fusion module he had previously written:
"I pre-defined a compensation function for the satellite orbit in the algorithm. As long as the satellite number and real-time orbit parameters are known, the transmission delay can be calculated in reverse."
Chief Hou immediately picked up the dedicated phone line.
"Connect me to the aerospace tracking and control center; I need the real-time orbital data for Fengyun-1!"
The conference room was filled with the sounds of ringing telephones and issuing commands.
Lin Yu, however, felt as if he were in another world.
His eyes were fixed on the scrolling code on the screen, and the sound of his fingers tapping on the keyboard was crisp and rapid.
Five minutes later, the data streams from the three locations began to converge.
Ten minutes later, the satellite orbital parameters were loaded.
Lin Yu typed the last line of the command line and pressed Enter.
The Cray supercomputer's fans suddenly accelerated, emitting a deep roar.
On the screen, the map representing the Serajevo region began to refresh, with a red dot flashing on the map and an error radius of 87 meters.
"Start noise reduction," Lin Yu said softly.
The light spot then began to shrink.
87米、53米、32米、18米、9米。
When the number jumped to 4.7 meters, a suppressed gasp rippled through the entire conference room.
A five-meter error is generally sufficient for positioning.
But Lin Yu didn't stop. He activated the three-location signal weighting algorithm, which only existed in concept yesterday, and also activated the multi-source signal fusion positioning command that had just been input.
Fortunately, he had studied this in his previous life, as evidenced by the article "Research on Multi-Source Heterogeneous Signal Fusion Positioning" published in the Journal of Navigation in 2020.
This technology can perform weighted iterations of beacon signals, radio interference waves, and even satellite reflected waves to offset environmental errors.
It's perfect for this situation now.
After the technology was activated, the numbers continued to jump.
3.2 meters, 2.1 meters, 1.4 meters.
It finally stabilized at 0.7 meters.
Upon seeing this number, the professors in the conference room were speechless with shock.
They all stared wide-eyed, standing there in a daze.
This technology is beyond their comprehension!
How is this kid's brain structured? I just made a request, and he's already produced a finished product so quickly?!
"How much delay?"
It was Chief Hou who calmed down first and asked anxiously.
Lin Yu looked at the corner of the screen:
"Signal processing time: 1.2 seconds. Satellite transmission round-trip delay: 2.8 seconds. Total delay: 4 seconds."
"4 seconds?!"
Professor Wang cried out in disbelief.
"How is this possible?!"
Everyone stared in disbelief at the red dot on the screen, the signal accuracy remaining constant at 0.7 meters.
The conference room was deathly silent for a moment, then thunderous applause erupted!
Chief Hou stared intently at the slowly moving red dot on the map of Seraphim on the screen.
Only after seeing that it remained accurate did I finally breathe a sigh of relief.
Become!
After inviting the professors out of the meeting room, Chief Hou slowly said:
"Lin Yu, do you know what this positioning means?"
Lin Yu thought for a moment:
"Does that mean we can track that mortar truck?"
A complex light flashed in Chief Hou's eyes.
"Not only that, there are rationalists and extremists within the Serb army."
"The mortars on that truck were targeting the peace zone in Sarajevo. If the shelling occurs, the number of civilian casualties will be no less than 200."
"This would give BY a pretext for direct military intervention."
He turned to Lin Yu:
"But now we can anonymously transmit real-time location data to rational officers who are insiders on the Serb side."
"They could organize a military exercise right near that truck."
The road was blocked just in time.
They happened to spot this unauthorized armed vehicle.
Upon hearing what Chief Hou said, Lin Yu suddenly realized:
"This way, the massacre was prevented, direct intervention by the authorities was avoided, and the credit was given to the peace forces within the Serbs?"
Commander Hou nodded, a pleased expression on his face showing that the student was teachable.
"The Serbs will owe us a huge favor, but nobody knows that we are the ones who did it."
"The Balkan Peninsula is geographically very important, and it's only been a little over two years since the collapse of the Soviet Union..."
"If BY expands eastward, we will face a lot of pressure."
Lin Yu listened quietly, his expression shifting as if he had suddenly thought of something:
"Is that guy who put up the beacon... safe?"
Commander Hou glanced at him and said slowly:
"His name is Zhou Minghai. This operation was a success, and he will be able to return to China next week."
"If it fails..."
He didn't finish speaking, but Lin Yu understood what he meant.
Lin Yu looked back at the screen; the red dot was slowly moving along the north bank of the Milyazka River. He said decisively:
"It won't fail!"
"What format do you need for the signal location? I'll process it right away."
