The Ancestral Legacy Begins in the Wild West
Chapter 18: The Weapons Workshop is Fully Armed
"Our company has many well-equipped facilities; otherwise, most of those floors would be empty."
So if you get injured outside, you don't need to crowd into hospitals or go to foreign churches for help. We have doctors and places to treat wounds, and naturally, we also have our own equipment.
As Uncle Li walked slowly with his cane, he said, "But we're still not sure what you're good at. Besides, time waits for no one. Since you're interested in finding a job, here's an order."
Zhang Chang'an looked up and saw a huge mechanical workshop in front of him.
This is a large, stand-alone building located at an intersection, a combination of residential and factory structures. It features numerous chimneys and a mix of mechanical equipment within its wooden and stone construction.
The most eye-catching thing is a huge gear above the entrance. The gear is always turning, and in front of the gear hangs a perpetually balanced iron sign.
"Chamberlain Weapons Workshop." Zhang Chang'an looked at the huge sign, his gaze quickly drawn to an unusual capital letter.
That's Chamberlain's C, but the problem is, the letter isn't made of metal; it's a huge, curved glass tube.
A large amount of blue fluorescent liquid flowed inside the tube, making the entire signboard shine.
"This is……"
"No." Uncle Li directly predicted his thoughts: "Blue agate is a valuable and dangerous thing. Although their family is not too worried about being robbed, they wouldn't be crazy like this. It's just fluorescent pigment."
Uncle Li pushed open the door and walked in, the welcoming copper bell jingling at the entrance: "But you're not entirely wrong, they do have a lot of whale oil equipment."
Upon entering, a fairly standard Victorian-era steam workshop comes into view.
To be honest, it's a bit like a hardware store, with lots of iron racks carrying countless parts and semi-finished products, extending all the way inside.
Besides these, there are many other operating drive shafts and even legitimate machines scattered in corners and overhead.
In the counter next to the door, an apprentice lifted his extremely complicated goggles, which were stacked and branched with various lenses, resembling deer antlers.
Below is a Chinese face: "Mr. Li? Isn't today your company's ration day?"
The apprentice said this, but clearly he didn't mean to make things difficult for them. On the contrary, he seemed to want to check the schedule next to him, but he was holding complicated tools in his hands, and he didn't know whether to put them down or not.
Uncle Li calmly walked inside, then said in Mandarin, "No need to look for Ah Ming anymore. Your boss sent us. Someone owes you something."
Upon hearing this, Amin said, "Oh, please wait a moment. I haven't started managing the accounts yet, and the boss won't talk to me about this. I'll go and call the boss down."
Uncle Li calmly waved his hand: "Your boss has already made things very clear over there. You just need to help him find a gun that suits him."
As he spoke, he pointed to Zhang Chang'an behind him.
………………
"Uncle Li is a well-known figure among the Chinese in London. I've met him a few times, but I still feel a little nervous."
While scratching his head, Amin said, "The boss said a long time ago that to do business, you have to get used to dealing with people. But I think it will take me a long time to learn this."
As he spoke, he slipped sideways past two shelves overflowing with items, then turned his head with ease to indicate:
"But don't worry, I'm quite good at mechanics. The boss hasn't let me take over the business yet, but I can do most of the technical work in the workshop very well."
Zhang Chang'an followed them in, and with A-Ming's hand, looked into the workshop they had entered.
This place is like a workshop, with very long workbenches, various tools and parts, several large machine tables, and large boxes filled with finished products.
Zhang Chang'an glanced around and quickly spotted many finished firearms in several uncovered boxes.
Amin's attitude towards these things was completely different from his previous restraint. He casually grabbed a box, pulled out a pistol, and began to talk non-stop:
"Your company is a regular customer here, so I pretty much know what kind of guns your business is suited for. You often go into all sorts of alleys, and long guns are inconvenient to carry, so you basically buy handguns. That's what we buy the most here."
As he spoke, he turned the cylinder of the revolver in his hand: "Like this one, the Colt M1873, the most classic revolver, six rounds in total, sturdy and reliable. The army buys tens of thousands of them."
He then placed the gun on the table and picked up another four-barreled pistol: "Or this one is not bad either, the Volcano Pistol, lever-operated, which means you fire one shot and then push the lever to continue firing."
He briefly demonstrated with the unloaded pistol, then grabbed a proper rifle from another box.
"Of course, if we encounter a more troublesome situation, we will always need a more powerful gun."
The lever mechanism of that gun is now most commonly used in rifles. This one, also called the M1873, is a lever rifle from the Winchester Aircraft Company in the United States, and it can hold 15 rounds.
Modern rifles are actually considering bolt-action mechanisms because many have switched to more powerful pointed bullets, which we also have here.
But lever guns also have their advantages. If you're not aiming and are blind firing, you can fire rapidly like a revolver—just rest it on your hip and keep turning the lever.
Amin quickly placed the gun on the worktable beside him: "Mr. Zhang, do you have any ideas, or would you like to test fire it?"
Looking at the dazzling array of firearms before him, Zhang Chang'an scratched his head, then asked about something else: "Actually, I was just about to ask, your shop is called Chamberlain, and your boss is...?"
Armin was taken aback by the question and paused for a moment before quickly replying, "Ah, yes, Joseph Chamberlain, the former mayor of Birmingham and the Secretary of State for Foreign Trade..."
Zhang Chang'an quickly revealed an expression of "I knew it."
Amin continued with a brief introduction:
"The boss is indeed a very capable politician, but he actually started out making his fortune in bolts; he's also an entrepreneur. I really admire him..."
Zhang Chang'an certainly knew this was an important figure. Because this Joseph would later have a child, the future Neville Chamberlain, the British Prime Minister who pursued a policy of appeasement during World War II.
"No wonder they're not afraid of being robbed and can still do business in controlled weapons."
Zhang Chang'an only sighed once. It was indeed exciting to encounter someone who had come into contact with a great historical figure, but he knew he would most likely not have any interaction with this person.
This simply means that his requirements for firearms can definitely be met here.
Having put that topic behind us, and looking at the guns in front of him, Zhang Chang'an didn't really need to be conflicted at all.
After he went back last time, he made a special effort to catch up on all kinds of historical knowledge, so he had some understanding of these things and was able to make a choice quickly.
………………
Li Bo was indeed a natural businessman. When Zhang Chang'an returned to the front desk, he was chatting happily with the other employees in the store.
"Have you made your choice?" Uncle Li turned to look at him.
"I've got all the bullets." Zhang Chang'an nodded and continued, "I'll go straight to work."
Uncle Li immediately replied, "There's something else. Besides guns, do you need any other weapons?"
