Chapter 36 The Child's Riddle

In Bai Chen's opinion, the design of this beginner trial dungeon was truly malicious.

On the surface, most people would think this dungeon is a survival game where all you have to do is survive until dawn. But if you think that way, the whole team will be wiped out.

"It's a pity one of them got away... Oh well, given his performance, we couldn't count on him anyway."

Looking at the now empty living room, Bai Chen shook his head slightly and stood up from beside the fire.

Time was tight and the task was heavy. Yuanqing and the other two had already set off, leaving the nearest villa to him.

Aside from the Tiger King, his teammates are of pretty high caliber. There shouldn't be any problems with the distant relatives and the bard, but as for the saying "The Tao that can be told is not the eternal Tao," he can only trust them.

He had been worried about this before, so he had specially kept a piece of white candle hoping to reuse it. But he didn't expect that white candles were disposable, and it almost killed him instead...

Considering that he had not yet recovered his strength and even walking was difficult, Bai Chen took out the sewing needles and catgut he had found in the four villas and sat down next to the corpses in the hall.

Apart from the daughter who drowned in the swimming pool, the bodies of the others were all severely damaged, especially the father, who was barely recognizable as a human.

Although he still didn't understand what that wish referred to, he had a general idea when he saw the sewing needle.

As for more specifics, we'll have to see what the others actually took back from those villas...

While pondering in his mind, Bai Chen began to sew up the corpse.

Stitching up a corpse is a technical job that most people can't do. He had never done needlework before, so the stitches were crooked and looked like centipedes crawling, which was extremely ugly... Fortunately, the person involved didn't have any objections.

Of the five corpses, the father was the most difficult to stitch up, as not only did the wounds on his neck, but the wounds on his stomach and hands also required extra treatment. The daughter was the easiest to stitch up, because she didn't need any stitches at all.

After working for half an hour, just as he finished using up the bundle of catgut, Bai Chen completed the stitching of the corpse.

The process of sewing up the corpse took a bit more time at the beginning, but once you got used to it, the rest was much faster.

Bai Chen pressed his neck and stood up from the ground.

After estimating the time, Bai Chen picked up the last white candle from the coffee table, turned around, and went out the door.

Just as his figure disappeared into the torrential rain, the five corpses that had been lying motionless on the ground slowly rose to their feet.

.......................................

"This damn thing..."

Leaning against the doorframe, feeling the overwhelming fatigue washing over him, the bard gritted his teeth.

The clue was to find a specific item hidden in a villa. This seemed easy, but in reality, the difficulty far exceeded his expectations.

In the villa he chose, the owners were two mischievous children who not only created obscure and difficult riddles, but also had an extreme fondness for playing pranks.

For example, you might be dribbling a ball on the stairs, only to find it's a head when it rolls down; or you might secretly stand on someone's shoulder until they feel a heavy weight on their shoulders and look in the mirror to find two pairs of feet standing on their shoulders; or you might place a trash can on top of a half-open door frame, and when they push the door open, they're covered in trash from head to toe, looking utterly disheveled...

If it weren't for the fact that the white candle in his hand could only be extinguished by his own will, it would have gone out long ago. In addition, his energy and spirit were being continuously consumed by the white candle. Although he did not make any big movements, he felt as if he had run 10,000 meters in one breath, and he was so tired that he just wanted to sit down and rest.

If he hadn't undergone systematic desensitization training for fear and fright, his current situation might be even worse. Those two brats completely treated him like a toy, constantly throwing all sorts of surprise attacks and frights at him.

Even worse, he still hasn't been able to solve the other person's mystery.

I have two candies, one red and one green. The red candy is watermelon flavored. What flavor is the green candy?

That was the question those two brats posed. Based on this clue, he needed to find a knife inside the villa.

Since he had absolutely no clue, his original intention was to ignore the mystery and search the villa directly. After all, a knife is not like a needle; it's difficult to find a needle in a villa, but it would be much easier to find a knife.

Unfortunately, even after searching almost the entire villa, he found nothing.

After glancing at the white candle, which was only a quarter full, and after a moment's thought, the bard took out the cigarette that Bai Chen had given him earlier from his backpack.

As the cigarette in his hand was lit, the aroma of grilled meat flooded his taste buds, instantly clearing his tired and listless mind.

"An invigorating fragrance...no wonder."

Looking at the brightly lit words "Dust White" on the incense stick in his hand, the bard paused for a moment before letting out a wry smile.

—He meant that the other person seemed like Superman.

"Forget it, there's no point in worrying about this now."

With a sigh, the bard straightened up again, the incense stick still dangling from his lips.

Ignoring the sphere slowly rolling towards him in the darkness, he turned and went back into the room.

Although the room's furnishings and decorations have faded and yellowed, it is still clear that this is a children's room. On the bed placed against the wall, two small figures lie side by side.

Once again, the bard put his hand under the pillow, and when he pulled it out a moment later, he had two candies, one red and one green.

"This thing... is it still edible?"

While comforting himself, the bard put the green candy into his mouth.

To be honest, this candy, which had been sitting for who knows how long, had a really strong taste. The moment it entered his mouth, the pungent smell of decay almost made him gag reflexively.

However, he was also a ruthless person. He closed his eyes and took a big bite, trying to discern the taste of the candy.

Half a minute later, the bard opened his eyes with a slight sense of confusion.

This candy tastes strange; it has a faint watermelon flavor, but also a strange, dry taste that's hard to describe.

"This tastes...like watermelon rind?"

Turning his head to look at the two figures covered by the blanket on the bed, the bard had a subtle expression on his face.

Red watermelon tastes like watermelon, green watermelon rind tastes like watermelon. This answer does fit a child's thinking, but what does it have to do with the knife he's looking for?

"Watermelon, watermelon rind..."

After chanting the mantra dozens of times, as if he had thought of something, the bard tucked the blankets around the two children in bed and then turned and went downstairs.

A few minutes later, he picked up a plastic knife from the table, the kind that looks like a mortar shovel, usually used for cutting cakes.

He had noticed this thing at the very beginning, but no matter how he looked at it, it had nothing to do with the knife he was looking for, so he didn't pay much attention to it.

But now...

As if sensing something, the bard turned his head and looked towards the stairs.

At some point, two small figures holding hands appeared at the top of the stairs. They were waving at him, as if saying goodbye.

As the bard instinctively reached out to respond, a flash of lightning streaked across the sky, and the two figures at the top of the stairs vanished without a trace.

...as if they had never existed in the first place.
