Reborn in America: I Have an Equipment Slot
Chapter 79 The local gangs are so rude.
"$1000? These seeds cost you $1000?"
Irving glanced at the dozen or so small bags on the shelf and his lips twitched.
James nodded, then said angrily, "The four of us each contributed $1000! We spent a total of $4000 on this stuff!"
"Damn it! The local gangs are so rude!"
"Perhaps you could find someone else to resell these hemp seeds?" Irving suggested, looking at James, who looked constipated.
"The anti-smuggling bureau is cracking down hard on leaf smuggling now, so let's forget about reselling it." James shook his head dejectedly.
Seeing this, Irving didn't say anything more.
After all, he only came here to see if these seeds were cannabis seeds.
Now that the matter has been resolved, there shouldn't be anything left for him to do here.
Irving was just about to speak and tell James that he planned to leave.
Just then.
The punk-style Mexican guy who had just left came back in.
"Hey James, Jason just came up with a great idea. Since this bunch of hemp seeds isn't marijuana seeds, we can't grow leaves, and selling them is too risky. Why don't we sell them to the high schoolers who are going to the party!" the Mexican guy suggested excitedly.
"Will this work?" James frowned, looking doubtful.
"It'll definitely work!" The Mexican guy became more and more energetic as he spoke. "These high school kids these days love to throw all sorts of parties, they're at the age where they love to brag, and a lot of them smoke marijuana. If we can persuade them to buy these hemp seeds, not only will we not lose money, we'll definitely make a fortune!"
"Dude, isn't this a bit unethical? Even if these hemp seeds aren't very toxic, they look similar to Indian hemp seeds. If we get caught, those students' lives will be ruined," Owen retorted, frowning.
"No problem, that's easy," the Mexican young man waved his hand and said cheerfully. "At worst, we'll sell the hemp seeds to them and then notify their parents. This way, not only will it not harm those minors, but it will also keep them under control, put their parents at ease, and let us make money. Everyone's happy!"
Seeing Irving nod in agreement, James, who was standing to the side, seemed to have thought of something and instantly broke down in his guard.
"F**K! How did you know I fell for that trick before! Years ago when I was in high school, some heartless guys sold us powdered sugar as heroin, which gave me pneumonia!"
"Haha, really? Don't tell me you took a six-month leave of absence from high school because of this, right?"
Seeing James nod, the Mexican guy standing next to him immediately burst into laughter.
Irving stood aside, watching with interest as the two discussed how to repackage the hemp seeds.
He wasn't very interested in it either. After saying hello to James, he left the basement.
As soon as I left the villa and stepped out of this poor neighborhood, the sky began to darken and become gloomy, and soon a light rain began to fall.
I went to a bus stop by the roadside, sheltering from the rain while waiting for the bus.
Just then, his cell phone suddenly started vibrating in his pocket.
Irving frowned when he saw it was an unfamiliar number.
Ever since he got this phone number, his phone has been receiving all sorts of harassing calls almost every day.
Irving tried many methods, including filing complaints and threatening the operator's customer service.
After all that effort, the number of harassing calls decreased significantly, but they still kept coming back. Irving was truly at his wit's end.
As early as 1991, the United States clearly established the principle that "no one may make a home phone call without prior consent, whether by human or recorded voice," and authorized the Federal Communications Commission to formulate enforcement regulations and rules.
Furthermore, in the following years, various related laws were introduced to improve TCPA.
In 2003, a "Thank You Call Enforcement" law was even enacted, establishing a nationwide online "Do Not Call" registry.
Although the frequency of harassing calls decreased significantly in the short term, over time, many operators found that the profits earned from harassing calls were negligible compared to the fines payable for violating the rules.
So in the end, the matter was left unresolved.
Irving hung up the phone and was just about to put his phone in his pocket.
But to his surprise, the phone rang again.
Irving was somewhat surprised. After hesitating for a moment, he still pressed the call button.
"Hello, who is this?" Owen frowned, looking like he was about to hang up the phone if something was wrong.
To his surprise, instead of an urgent sales pitch, he heard a sweet female voice on the other end of the phone.
"Hello, Owen, I'm Judy, do you remember me?"
"Judy?" Owen was slightly taken aback, then remembered.
The other person must be the punk girl with a British accent that he met on the roadside after buying the RV.
"Oh, I remember now! But how did you know my phone number?" Owen was a little surprised.
"I got your contact information from Mr. Walter. I passed the audition, so I asked him for your phone number. I'm calling to thank you and also to invite you to dinner to express my gratitude."
Judy took a deep breath and said excitedly, "If I play this role well, I can get a generous salary, enough to bail my dad out of jail! Thank you so much!"
"It was nothing, just a small favor to me." Hearing the excitement in the other person's voice, Irving felt much lighter.
"How about this, 6 pm at Brooklyn Restaurant, it's on me, okay?" Judy insisted.
"Well, since a beautiful lady insists on asking me out, as a gentleman, I certainly can't refuse," Owen shrugged.
His helpless yet enjoyable tone made Judy on the other end of the phone burst into laughter.
After hanging up the phone, Irving immediately glanced at the time.
Great, there's still plenty of time.
He simply helped Judy out of the blue, and to be honest, he didn't expect her to thank him or expect any reward.
To his surprise, the other party actually passed the audition and got a role in the movie, which was quite unexpected.
After all, judging from the previous script discussion, although the film's investment was not large and it did not have any big-name actors, the quality of the actors was quite high.
It's clear that Walt and his team genuinely wanted to make a good movie.
