Apocalypse: The Primordial Pearl Recognizes Its Master, Starting with Infinite Space
Chapter 57 Yangcheng Hospital
In his previous life, Lin Chen's trio followed a typical "lone wolf" approach.
Thanks to his A-level earth-遁 (earth-escaping) ability, they were always able to avoid large hordes of zombies and find relatively safe routes and hidden supply points that hadn't been looted, so they never really had to worry about survival supplies. They also always kept their distance from the recruitment offers from various major forces.
Looking back now, Lin Chen has a clear mind—the one who truly resisted joining a large force was not himself.
He understood the importance of banding together in the apocalypse, but he disliked the infighting within those factions and the behavior of certain high-ranking officials. Zhao Kai and Li Qiang, on the other hand, repeatedly and vehemently opposed siding with either side, citing the preciousness of freedom and their unwillingness to be bound by constraints.
It seems they are worried that once Lin Chen joins a certain force, he will be highly valued for his unique earth-escape ability, and his status will rise rapidly, leaving them far behind.
That underlying jealousy and sense of imbalance is the true psychology behind their insistence on the "lone wolf" path.
Many details and subtleties of human nature that were obscured in my past life only became clear after I was reborn, with a God's-eye view and a more composed mindset.
Collecting his thoughts, Lin Chen quickened his pace, steadily making his way towards the city center. He stopped at every large shopping mall, brand chain store, and specialty market he encountered along the way, sweeping away any usable supplies.
These resources were mostly wasted in his previous life—in the early days, humans were unable to clear such a dense area of zombies, and by the time the major powers had taken shape and were able to organize a cleanup, much of the food had already rotted, and other supplies were severely damaged. Now, they are a perfect opportunity to enrich his treasure trove.
He arrived at Yangcheng People's Hospital at around 3 p.m.
This top-tier hospital was one of Guangzhou's medical centers before the apocalypse, and it boasts a grand scale.
At this moment, its imposing outpatient building was like a silent behemoth, with many broken windows and numerous zombies dressed in hospital gowns or medical uniforms wandering around the square in front of it, covered in blood and deathly silence.
Lin Chen's goal was clear: the hospital pharmacy. The vast stock of medicines there—from antibiotics and emergency medications to chronic disease drugs, anesthetics, and medical equipment—was of immense value in the apocalypse!
Instead of forcing his way through the main entrance, he relied on a rough assessment of the building's structure to navigate directly through a space, appearing in a relatively quiet internal corridor. Moving quickly, he soon found the pharmacy area.
The pharmacy doors were tightly shut, and at least a hundred zombies were gathered outside the railings, frantically pounding on them.
The railings were severely deformed and teetering on the verge of collapse, clearly not going to hold up for much longer. Fortunately, zombies can't climb, otherwise they would have already entered the pharmacy.
Lin Chen slipped into the pharmacy and, to his surprise, found no zombies. In a corner further inside, behind the shelves and counters, a dozen or so figures were huddled together.
The group consisted entirely of women, all wearing stained white lab coats and name tags. They huddled together, their faces still showing shock, but more than anything, extreme astonishment and bewilderment, as they stared at Lin Chen—clearly unable to comprehend how this stranger had appeared out of nowhere.
Although these female pharmacists were pale, they did not exhibit the obvious hunger and lethargy typical of survivors, and their eyes were relatively clear. A glance at the empty glucose injection bottles scattered around them made it immediately clear.
"Are you the doctors here?" Lin Chen broke the silence first, his voice calm and revealing little emotion.
After a brief silence, a woman in her thirties, with a composed demeanor and wearing glasses, took a deep breath, stepped forward, and answered on behalf of the group: "We are pharmacists from the pharmacy. Are you... part of the rescue team?" Her voice carried a hint of hope, but more so, wariness and uncertainty.
"No." Lin Chen denied it directly, then turned around and began to act.
With a slight thought, the boxes of medicine on the shelf began to disappear one after another.
This scene left the female pharmacists in the corner speechless, their eyes wide with astonishment.
"Sister Yang, look at what he's using... isn't it a spatial ability?" The youngest female pharmacist, Xu Qian, who was about twenty years old, leaned close to "Sister Yang's" ear, her voice extremely low, but unable to hide her incredible excitement.
Yang Na, whom she called "Sister Yang," actually started to think about it seriously and whispered, "It could also be a storage magic item..."
At this critical moment of life and death, the two were actually discussing in hushed tones the merits and possibilities of "supernatural abilities" versus "magical artifacts." Several pharmacists nearby were also engrossed in listening, temporarily forgetting the impending death outside the door—supernatural powers that had once existed only in their fantasies were now playing out vividly before their very eyes.
It wasn't until Lin Chen cleared out an area and headed towards the shelf where glucose injections were stored that Xu Qian suddenly realized, "Hey! He's even taking the glucose away!"
That was their sustenance for survival.
"Sir!" Yang Na mustered her courage and raised her voice, her tone earnest, "Could you... leave us some glucose? We're counting on that."
They dared not stop Lin Chen from collecting other medicines, only hoping to keep these life-sustaining liquids to hold out until the possible rescue.
Lin Chen stopped what he was doing, turned around, and calmly swept his gaze across their expectant yet fearful faces.
He didn't immediately agree. Instead, he pointed to the severely deformed guardrails outside the window, which were being battered wildly, and said in a calm but icy voice, "How long do you think these guardrails can hold?"
These words were like a bucket of ice water, instantly extinguishing the glimmer of hope that had just ignited in everyone's eyes. Everyone turned pale, their eyes dimming. Yes, they were well aware of the twisted state of the railings and the screams so close to their ears. But who would willingly give up until the very last moment?
"Then...can you save us?" Xu Qian asked timidly again, her voice barely audible, her cheeks flushed with nervousness. "We...we're very useful! Sister Yang Na is a young expert in the field of pharmacy, and Sister Qian is particularly skilled in equipment management...we can all do the work, we're not just freeloaders!"
She was terrified of offending this "inhuman being"—isn't it often said in novels that a master has a strange temper and hates being asked for things?
The others also cast pleading glances their way, like drowning people looking at the only piece of driftwood.
Lin Chen nodded inwardly, even feeling a secret sense of satisfaction at being in control.
In fact, he had his eye on this group of professional pharmacists from the very beginning. Although only Yang Na, Xu Qian, and Qian Muyao were decent-looking, the rest were all of average appearance, and some of them were even older.
But with "medicine" at the forefront, professionalism is priceless! In the future, a reliable medical team will be no less strategically valuable than top-tier combat superhumans.
