Apocalypse: The Primordial Pearl Recognizes Its Master, Starting with Infinite Space
Chapter 138 Interception
The Jin Mao Tower, an ordinary office building located in the eastern part of Guangzhou, was once a place where tens of thousands of office workers rushed around every day, but now it has become a huge zombie abode.
In the afternoon, Liu Feifei and the others were standing in the empty, cold lobby on the first floor again, stretching their stiff shoulders.
From dawn till now, her team has been searching and fighting in this 28-story building for a whole day.
The intense battle left everyone exhausted, but their eyes remained alert and their spirits were high.
Their combat experience over the past few days had taught them that a moment's carelessness could be fatal.
Not far behind them, about two or three hundred survivors who had just been found were gathered.
They huddled in a corner, wrapped in various fabrics they had found in the office—curtains, tablecloths, and even clothes from other deceased survivors.
Their vacant eyes, or those filled with the bewilderment of surviving a disaster, contrasted sharply with the well-equipped and spirited demeanor of Liu Feifei's team. The team members were distributing high-energy emergency rations to them.
"Sister Feifei." Fan Xiaoying, the youngest scout in the team, came over. Her special ability was danger perception, and every team needed someone with a similar ability.
Her voice was very low, filled with reluctance, "This building... is there really only this many people left? I heard from those older men that tens of thousands of people used to come and go here every day."
Another team member, who was checking the weapons for damage, chimed in without looking up, "Those who could run probably escaped as soon as the blood rain stopped. The rest either didn't have time or weren't capable. These past few days of extreme cold, with people lacking food and clothing, sick and injured, plus the zombies... it's already quite remarkable that so many have survived."
Another team member sighed, muttering, "This damned world...where did it all come from? It was perfectly fine all of a sudden..."
Liu Feifei interrupted her subordinates' discussion. Her voice was clear and steady, carrying a comforting power: "Alright, stop reminiscing. Just remember to follow Brother Lin, and we'll be able to survive."
He then looked at Wu Fang, the deputy captain beside him, and asked, "Have the personnel and supplies been inventoried?"
Liu Feifei had matured a lot by this time, and the fragility she had shown when Lin Chen first rescued her was gone.
"All accounted for, Captain." Wu Fang, the deputy captain in charge of logistics, immediately reported, "We have collected approximately 8,500 Tier 1 crystal cores and 112 Tier 2 cores. We still have 30% of our ammunition remaining. A total of 273 survivors have been rescued, including 31 with minor injuries and no seriously wounded."
Liu Feifei nodded: "Pack up, we're going back. On the way back, if we encounter any small groups of zombies, deal with them as needed. That's all for today."
"What about...these people?" Fan Xiaoying pointed to the group of survivors.
Liu Feifei had already considered this issue: "Give them directions to the Mountain and Water Garden and tell them the safe route we cleared when we came. Also, give each person an extra ration, enough for them to walk to the outer city area of the shelter."
Her tone was calm yet authoritative: "We still have a mission and cannot escort them. Whether they make it there or not depends on their own fate."
"Okay, Captain, I'll go tell them." Fan Xiaoying agreed and turned to tell the survivors what Liu Feifei meant.
A commotion arose in the crowd, with some sobbing with gratitude and others whispering with concern, but most people simply accepted the food silently, memorizing the instructions. This place wasn't far from the Mountain and Water Garden.
In these last days, to have someone point out a way to survive is an immense blessing. Very few fools have survived to this day.
Just as Liu Feifei's team was making final preparations in the lobby, and the survivors were nervously forming teams to leave, no one noticed that at the corner of a shop diagonally opposite, a dozen pairs of cold eyes were staring intently at them.
Xiao Ma, still holding a pair of binoculars, spoke with an incredulous excitement mixed with a hint of lewdness, "Boss, look! Isn't that Liu Feifei, the national fairy from TV before? Tsk tsk, I can't believe she's fallen into Lin Chen's hands too! This guy is fucking lucky!"
Xiao Cheng, standing nearby, snatched the binoculars, glanced at the screen, and started cursing, "Damn! It really is! That bastard surnamed Lin has even managed to get his hands on a big star like her! And those girls with her, they're all gorgeous..."
"Smack! Smack!" Two crisp snaps landed heavily on the back of Xiao Ma and Xiao Cheng's heads.
Wang Gang withdrew his hand, his face so gloomy it looked like it could drip water, his eyes glaring fiercely at his two incompetent subordinates: "Did I bring you here to see women? Where are your eyes looking! Can't you get down to business first! While Chang Chengye's men aren't around, tell them about the people we brought."
Xiao Ma and Xiao Cheng shrank back, no longer daring to utter any more nonsense.
Xiao Ma rubbed the back of his head and quickly reported the important matter: "Boss, the situation of the brothers we brought from Andu is... not good. That old fox Chang Chengye has been sending people to contact us in secret. Fat Cat and Hamster, those two opportunists, have already... already defected." As he spoke, his voice was filled with hatred.
Wang Gang's fists clenched so tightly they cracked, but his face showed little surprise, only a sinister look of "I knew it all along": "I expected this."
He took a deep breath of the cold air, suppressing the violence in his heart. "So, we don't have much time left. We must either kill Lin Chen and avenge ourselves before the Chang family completely digests our people, or... overthrow the Chang family and take their place!"
Xiao Cheng chimed in, his tone equally indignant: "I've pretty much figured out everything about the Chang family. It's that Zhang Zicheng from the former SWAT team, and that Leng Zhijie with S-level superpowers—they're incredibly strange! They're more loyal to Chang Chengye than dogs!"
"The brother we sent to test the waters had his neck snapped by Leng Zhijie before he could say more than a few words... Luckily, he kept his mouth shut and didn't reveal our secrets."
Wang Gang was silent for a moment, his eyes flashing: "Continue to secretly contact other people. Chang Chengye was willing to sell out the Jiang family without hesitation; wouldn't his men, unless they're die-hard loyalists like Zhang and Leng, have some ulterior motives? This is our opportunity!"
"Yes, boss!" The two nodded quickly.
Wang Gang's gaze returned to the busy figures in the lobby of the building across the street, especially Liu Feifei, who was surrounded in the middle. His eyes flashed with increasing murderous intent: "Now, let's give Lin Chen a 'small gift.' The Chang family is wary of us; they won't even provide us with rocket launchers or heavy machine guns, just these cheap grenades..."
He weighed the heavy offensive grenade in his hand and sneered, "That's enough. When they come out and their formation is most concentrated, throw a volley to disrupt them! Then, while they're in disarray, we'll sneak up and kill as many as we can!"
Xiao Cheng looked at the grenade, then at the beautiful figures opposite him, clicked his tongue, and said regretfully, "Sigh, such a lovely group of girls... it's a bit of a pity they're blown up like this."
But what gleamed in his eyes was the same cruelty and excitement as Wang Gang's.
Xiao Ma had already begun silently calculating the throwing distance and angle, and whispered to Wang Gang, "Boss, they're coming out soon. The survivors go first, and the line will loosen up for a while... that's when..."
Wang Gang licked his chapped lips, like a hungry wolf eyeing its prey, and gently released the safety pin on the grenade before pulling the pin again: "Get ready... listen to my commands."
