Apocalypse: The Primordial Pearl Recognizes Its Master, Starting with Infinite Space
Chapter 13 The Hunt Begins
At this moment, the villa area outside the window has been completely plunged into a chaotic vortex of impending doom.
In the distance, more and more swaying figures gathered on the street, dragging their mutilated limbs and dripping with thick, dark red blood. Like an invisible tide, they surged wave after wave toward every building in sight.
The survivors fled back into the house in terror, frantically pulling every curtain tight and using furniture and heavy objects to block the door cracks, praying desperately for a slim chance of a miracle.
Those unfortunate enough to be drenched in blood suffered an even more direct and cruel fate—
Some people only noticed the strange color of the rainwater, and then panicked and ran home after seeing the terrifying changes on the street.
They didn't know that what appeared to be just unusually colored "raindrops" were actually a death knell tolling in advance.
Often, as soon as they rush into the house, before they even have a chance to warn their family, their bodies begin to convulse violently, their pupils rapidly dilate to gray-white, and within ten seconds they complete the complete transformation from human to monster.
Then came the frenzied biting of loved ones, the heart-wrenching screams, and the flying blood and flesh... An entire building or a family would often be completely overrun and turned into a death zone within minutes.
Some survivors, who realized the danger of the bloodbath in time, were filled with despair and scurried around the buildings like headless flies, looking for any seemingly safe shelter—underground shopping malls, subway passages, underground parking garages—but dared not return to their homes, which might have become traps.
Many drivers habitually reach out of their windows to shake off cigarette ash while waiting at red lights or moving slowly, unknowingly getting their fingertips stained with the falling blood. This sudden transformation of the vehicle into a zombie-like creature can cause the car to lose control, triggering a series of horrific chain-reaction collisions and paralyzing the city's traffic arteries in a very short time.
Worse still, many citizens were drawn by the sudden commotion, screams, and strange phenomena outside their windows. Out of curiosity or worry, they opened their windows and even went outside to see what was going on.
As soon as they appeared, tiny but deadly drops of blood rained down on their hair, cheeks, and collars.
Even a few insignificant drops can trigger irreversible and terrifying mutations within an hour or even less.
What is most suffocating and despairing is that, according to Lin Chen's memories from his previous life, this blood-red rain that will bring utter destruction will last for three whole days, day and night.
The scenes from the previous life are still as clear as yesterday: even though the blood rain fell at nine o'clock in the morning, when most city residents had already entered the "relatively safe" period of relatively closed office buildings or factories, in just the first three days, more than 75% of the world's population was transformed due to direct contact with the blood rain or being bitten and scratched by zombies.
If it weren't for the later survivors paying a heavy price to raise awareness and drastically reduce all unnecessary outings, the mortality rate for humanity as a whole would likely have approached an even more terrifying figure.
Early zombies were only about 30% stronger than an average adult male and moved slowly. However, they had no sense of pain, were tireless, never retreated, and carried a deadly poison. Only by completely destroying their brainstem or severely damaging their head could they be stopped.
For ordinary people who are untrained and lack effective weapons, fighting them in close combat is almost tantamount to suicide.
Faced with the rapidly spreading chaos and approaching threat outside the window, Lin Chen's eyes showed no panic, only a calm as a frozen lake.
He led Li Ya, who followed closely behind, to the sturdy entrance door on the first floor. With a thought, he took out dozens of heavy supermarket metal shelves and thick construction barriers from his spatial storage, and quickly and systematically blocked the entrance to the villa.
Next, he brought out a huge, powerful portable outdoor speaker, plugged it into a high-capacity power supply he had prepared beforehand, and pressed play without hesitation.
"boom--!"
The deafeningly loud, dynamic music exploded instantly, its highly penetrating rhythm and melody wildly assaulting the air:
"You are my little apple~ I can never love you enough~"
The deep, powerful bass drumbeats made the bulletproof glass windows vibrate slightly.
"Brother Lin! What...what are you doing?!" Li Ya was startled by the sudden loud noise, instinctively covered her ears, and looked at Lin Chen in horror.
"The visual system of zombies degenerates severely in the early stages, almost equivalent to being half-blind," Lin Chen explained calmly, his voice still clear amidst the noisy music, "but their hearing becomes exceptionally acute, especially responsive to continuous, rhythmic sounds."
As he spoke, he raised the Barrett M82A1 sniper rifle in his hand; the heavy barrel was as black as ink, exuding a chilling murderous aura.
"What I need to do is lure all the zombies in this area that are attracted by sound right under our noses."
Sure enough, less than ten seconds after the raging music started, as if receiving a rallying call, hunched figures with contorted postures and unsteady steps began to sway and accelerate toward the villa playing "Little Apple" from alley corners, lawns, and the shadows of garage exits.
From their gray throats came low, longing hissing sounds, their cloudy eyes seemingly turning toward the source of the sound.
Lin Chen knelt on one knee, set up his sniper rifle, and steadily placed his right eye on the high-precision scope. His breathing became long and steady, and his heartbeat seemed to be in sync with the rhythm of the trigger.
"Bang--!"
The first shot, thunderous and deafening! The bullet precisely pierced the eye socket of a zombie charging at the forefront, and the entire posterior hemisphere of its skull exploded like a watermelon, splattering grayish-white fluid and bone fragments everywhere. The corpse collapsed to the ground with a thud.
"Bang! Bang! Bang!..."
The second shot, the third shot... the gunshots rang out one after another, the rhythm as steady as the Grim Reaper's stopwatch.
Each dull, loud "bang" signified that a hideous zombie had ceased to move forever, becoming one of the corpses piled up in front of the door.
In a short time, all thirty-five zombies that had been attracted were killed, and their mutilated corpses formed a bloody and eerie barrier in front of the villa.
The first wave of zombies attracted by the attack were all wiped out. Lin Chen put down the sniper rifle, which was still warm in his hand, put on thick rubber gloves, picked up a sharp military knife, and walked expressionlessly toward the pile of corpses outside the door that exuded a strong stench of blood and decay.
He deftly selected a body, precisely stabbed the dagger into the temple, twisted his wrist, easily split the skull, and carelessly probed into the viscous, festering brain tissue, quickly searching through it.
A moment later, he steadily picked out a crystal about the size of a little fingernail, shimmering with a milky white light—its texture was crystal clear, and there seemed to be subtle radiance flowing inside; it was a standard level one zombie crystal core.
