The wind carrying the noise from the rooftop of the emergency building sank down. The area outside the police cordon was packed with people, and the sounds of voices, the sharp wail of sirens, and a woman's suppressed sobs made one's eardrums tighten. Qu Xiaoxiao was half-pulled, half-dragged by Dr. Zhao to the front row.

As soon as I stood still, I caught a glimpse of a precarious figure on the edge of the rooftop—a girl in her early twenties, her cheap shirt plastered to her body by the wind, her hair disheveled and smeared with tears on her face, half of her body dangling in mid-air, her toes dangling dozens of meters above the ground, a sight that made my heart clench.

Inside the cordon, Xu Qin, wearing an immaculate white lab coat, stood a full three meters away from the edge, her face expressionless, her tone as calm as if she were discussing the weather: "What you're doing won't solve anything."

Qu Xiaoxiao raised an eyebrow and nudged Dr. Zhao beside her with her elbow: "Is this the Dr. Xu you mentioned? Is she here to offer advice or to cause trouble?"

Before Dr. Zhao could respond, the girl on the rooftop cried out, "My boyfriend broke up with me, I lost my job, and my parents keep scolding me for being useless. What's the point of my life?!"

"It's not something you can prove by dying." Xu Qin's eyes didn't waver at all. She even raised her hand to straighten the cuffs of her white coat. Her tone was almost indifferent and rational. "If you jump, the hospital will have to use its emergency resources to deal with your funeral arrangements, the police will have to spend time investigating, and your family will have to spend time dealing with your belongings. It's just adding unnecessary trouble for everyone."

"I didn't mean to cause trouble! I really can't take it anymore!" The girl lost control of her emotions instantly, and her body suddenly leaned outward, startling the crowd outside the cordon into gasping. Several police officers immediately rushed forward half a step, but then stopped for fear of upsetting her.

Qu Xiaoxiao clearly saw Xu Qin's brows furrow almost imperceptibly, as if she was impatient to be interrupted: "You have to persevere whether you want to or not. Everyone has setbacks in life. Your problem is nothing to others. Don't waste public resources here, get down."

"Wasting public resources?" Qu Xiaoxiao was furious, her teeth practically grinding to powder. Seeing this, Dr. Zhao quickly grabbed her wrist and whispered, "Xiaoxiao, don't be impulsive. Dr. Xu might just be expressing himself directly."

"Directly? That's called heartless!" Qu Xiaoxiao abruptly shook off Dr. Zhao's hand, the force so great that Dr. Zhao stumbled. She stomped her high heels to the police line, pointed at Xu Qin's nose, and opened fire, her voice shrill and sharp.

Like a knife chilled to the bone: "Dr. Xu, is it? I've truly broadened my horizons! I've seen indifferent people, but I've never seen anyone as cold-blooded as you! That young woman was standing on the brink of death, and instead of offering her a helping hand, you're already calculating the cost? So, in your eyes, her life isn't as valuable as the little bit of public resources you're saving?"

Xu Qin finally looked up and met her gaze directly, her eyes as cold as ice: "I'm just stating objective facts."

"Objective facts?" Qu Xiaoxiao sneered, leaning forward almost to break through the cordon. "The fact is that she's desperate now. Anyone can see that what she needs is empathy, not your cold, hard logic!"

What did you just say? That her problem is nothing? It's easy for you to talk when you're not in her shoes! You've been pampered since childhood, with a good family background and a bright future. Even if you stumble and fall, someone will be there to comfort you. What do you know about being desperate?

Do you know what it's like for her to be heartbroken, lose her job, get scolded by her parents, and cry herself to sleep in her rented room until dawn? You don't know! You just stand there making sarcastic remarks!

Her gaze swept over Song Yan, who was standing behind Xu Qin. The man was wearing a firefighter's uniform and staring at the rooftop with a furrowed brow. He was clearly quite dissatisfied with Xu Qin's words, which gave Qu Xiaoxiao more confidence.

Turning to the girl on the rooftop, he raised his voice: "Girl! Listen to me! Don't listen to her nonsense! She doesn't understand any of your difficulties! That jerk broke up with you because he was blind. You deserve better! You can find another job. With your age and energy, finding a better one isn't hard! If you jump now, who benefits? The man who dumped you, who can find another job without any remorse! Your parents scold you, but that's because they don't know how to express themselves. If you were really gone, they would cry until they fainted, and live the rest of their lives in regret!"

The girl stared blankly at her, her crying gradually subsided, and the despair in her eyes lessened, replaced by a hint of confusion.

"What are you confused about?" Qu Xiaoxiao saw right through her thoughts, her tone still sharp, yet carrying a power that pierced through the fog. "You think death will end everything? Wrong! If you die, the pain will be borne by your family. Those who hurt you will continue to eat and drink as usual, and might even talk about you behind your back as if you're stupid! This isn't liberation, it's cowardice! It's punishing yourself for other people's mistakes!"

"I'm not a coward..." the girl murmured, her body unconsciously shifting back.

"If you're not a coward, then get down!" Qu Xiaoxiao stared at her, her eyes sharp as knives. "You have the guts to stand there and contemplate suicide, but not the guts to live and fight for your dignity? That's too pathetic! Get down, and I'll introduce you to a job! My company happens to be short of an administrative staff member, and if you're willing to work hard, the salary will be higher than your previous one! As for that scumbag, go back and find someone ten times more handsome, ten times richer, and ten times more loving than him, and live a good life. Make him regret it so much he'll be slapping his thigh when he sees you!"

She paused, her voice softening slightly, but still carrying an undeniable air of authority: "Dying is easy, just close your eyes and jump. But living is awesome! You come down now, trample all that crap under your feet, show your parents how amazing you are, show that jerk what he missed out on, let everyone know you're not so easily defeated! Do you dare to try?"

The wind was still blowing on the rooftop, but the girl had completely recovered. She bit her lip, tears still falling, but she wiped them away and nodded to Qu Xiaoxiao.

Just as she lifted her foot to walk towards the safe area, two police officers rushed forward, firmly embraced her, and protected her behind them.

A collective gasp of relief erupted from the crowd. Dr. Zhao rushed forward, grabbed Qu Xiaoxiao's arm, and said with lingering fear, "You scared me to death! What if you had upset her?"

Qu Xiaoxiao pursed her lips, glanced back at Xu Qin's ashen face, then swept her gaze over Song Yan's complicated look, and muttered under her breath, "Provoking her? It's better than letting some people use passive-aggressive tactics to push her down! It's truly a misfortune for patients to have such an unsympathetic doctor."

Xu Qin clenched her fists, her knuckles turning white, biting her lower lip, but she couldn't utter a single word. Song Yan walked to her side, his profile sharp as a knife, and said in a low voice, "At your age, that expression isn't appropriate."

Xu Qin's face darkened further, while Qu Xiaoxiao was being pulled away from the crowd by Dr. Zhao. Before leaving, Qu Xiaoxiao turned back and raised her chin at Xu Qin, the disdain in her eyes like a thorn, making Xu Qin feel suffocated.
