Chapter 15 The Meeting Before Parting
Gu Jiangyin felt embarrassed when she remembered how she had cried while hugging Grandma Qin earlier.
Her face flushed, and she greeted Qin Heming in a low voice, "Brother Heming, when did you get back?"
Qin Heming looked up at her and said, "Last night."
Then, he looked down at his phone again.
Grandma Qin wiped away her tears, regained her composure, and grabbed Gu Jiangyin's wrist to ask:
"How could they have been switched at birth? Your grandmother was watching the whole thing; what did the hospital say?"
"It seems they didn't contact the hospital, afraid of making a scene. Aunt Chen heard privately that the hospital is backed by the Wang family. If they don't have evidence and damage the hospital's reputation, the Wang family won't let it go easily; they're afraid of getting into trouble."
As Gu Jiangyin spoke, she secretly switched her phone to mirror mode to check if her appearance was acceptable.
Grandma Qin nodded and said, "Indeed, the hospital belongs to the Wang family, and they are not to be trifled with."
She pondered for a moment, then said firmly:
"There's definitely something fishy going on here. You look a lot like your grandma, even more like your dad. Haven't you thought about doing another paternity test? Do you need Grandma Qin's help?"
Gu Jiangyin lowered her head, fiddling with her fingers, and said with a hint of helplessness:
"If we say it's already been done twice, and we do it again, they'll think it's unnecessary and won't cooperate. They probably won't approve of doing it privately either."
"Sigh, besides, with my mom's attitude, what's the point of doing it or not, or whether it's real or not?"
She straightened up, gathered her hair back with both hands, then lowered her head again, silently picking at her nails, her voice gradually fading.
Grandma Qin understood Gu Jiangyin's meaning; Shen Lan's attitude had broken her heart. She was already disheartened; whether it was true or false no longer mattered. If she rashly intervened at this point, not only would she lack the standing to do so, but she might also make things worse.
"And what about your dad? What's his attitude?" Grandma Qin handed her a sweet osmanthus rice cake.
"Have some snacks, these are your favorites. Didn't you eat breakfast?"
Gu Jiangyin took the rice cake and replied:
"He listens to my mom. As long as my mom is busy and doesn't keep an eye on him or act suspiciously, he doesn't really care about anything."
Grandma Qin frowned and pressed on, "Does he still have someone else outside?"
Gu Jiangyin thought for a moment and said:
"I don't know, but they argue a lot. Every time they argue, Mom brings up old grievances about Dad's past infidelity."
Then, with a soft sigh, he added:
"Or Mom brings up old grievances, and they start arguing again. Or she suspects Dad is having an affair. Anyway, they argue about these things all the time."
Grandma Qin was very clear about the Gu family's situation.
Thinking to herself, Yinyin was truly unfortunate to have such parents. She sighed and said softly:
"If your grandma knew, she'd be heartbroken. She's only been gone a short time, and you can't even stay at home anymore."
"Don't worry, they won't take care of you, but I will. Your Grandma Qin will support your education."
Grandma Qin placed her hands on Gu Jiangyin's shoulders and rubbed them, as if trying to convey some kind of strength to her.
"From today onwards, you are my granddaughter. Your grandmother was worried about you when she passed away and asked me to take care of you. I can't let her rest in peace."
Gu Jiangyin put her arm around Grandma Qin's arm, rested her head affectionately on her shoulder, and said in a seemingly relaxed manner:
"Grandma Qin, I've come today to say goodbye. I'm going to Xijing University to register."
"Which Xijing University, the one that deals with military industry?"
"Yes, tuition is waived, and they even give us a stipend, which is enough for living expenses."
Grandma Qin suddenly tore her off, straightened her shoulders, and scolded her:
"Don't make choices because of money. You have your Grandma Qin. I'll support your education, and I'll support you as far as you go."
Gu Jiangyin then playfully hugged Grandma Qin's arm and said:
"Thank you, Grandma. I've always liked the military industry and serving the country through science and technology. It's actually very suitable for me."
Then, with her beautiful big eyes wide open, she blinked and looked at Grandma Qin.
She knew this trick would work on Grandma Qin.
Hearing this, Qin Heming raised his head and glanced at Gu Jiangyin.
Then he quickly lowered his head again and continued typing on his phone.
Grandma Qin thought for a moment, then said with a hint of doubt:
"Isn't Tsinghua University good? It's the top university, with a great reputation and excellent faculty. Tsinghua University will definitely have the major you want to study, and you don't need to worry about tuition fees."
Gu Jiangyin shook her head and sighed:
"Grandma, I want to leave the capital. I don't want to stay here anymore."
It's normal for Grandma Qin to want to leave if she can't stay at home any longer, and she sighed heavily.
Suddenly, as if remembering something, she said to Gu Jiangyin:
"That girl surnamed Lin is no simpleton, I heard it from your Aunt Chen. You're so naive, you're no match for her. She even pushed you into the water, that's trying to kill her! What exactly happened? Tell me."
At this moment, Qin Heming was also drawn to the scene and looked up.
Gu Jiangyin then recounted in detail how Lin Xiyue first came to their home and how she pushed her into the lake this time.
"Tsk tsk tsk, this young girl is really ruthless." The old lady gasped in shock.
Grandma Qin pondered for a moment and quickly grasped the key point:
"She's clearly trying to squeeze you out; she wants to have both families. Think about it, she's the only daughter in the Lin family, and all the family property belongs to her. You have an older brother, and given how much your mother values him, she probably won't get much."
Grandma Qin counted on her fingers, explaining the details to Gu Jiangyin:
"She definitely won't give up on the Lin family. Although the Lin family isn't as powerful as yours, they're probably not far behind. Add to that the Gu family's resources, and her appetite is truly enormous. Are you really willing to leave like this?"
Gu Jiangyin chuckled lightly: "I don't care. My brother talks about the family fortune all the time, but I don't care about these things at all. I never intended to have anything. I'm fine, don't feel sorry for me."
Grandma Qin stared at her, sitting there blankly for a while, knowing that Gu Jiangyin's mind was made up and that further persuasion would be useless. She knew that Shen Lan had never liked this daughter, but she hadn't expected her to be so resolute, and she couldn't help but feel sad again.
When the Lin family was mentioned, Grandma Qin opened up to the two young people and told them about the sensational suicide of Miss Zhuang in Beijing years ago.
Back then, Ding Meiyu was a poor child from a remote and impoverished mountain area who couldn't afford to go to school.
The family favored sons over daughters and wanted to marry her off as soon as possible to raise money for her brother's wedding.
It was by chance that Zhuang Zinan, the daughter of the Zhuang family, was matched with a charity organization and received one-on-one financial assistance.
With Zhuang Zinan's financial support and encouragement, Ding Meiyu was finally able to leave the mountains.
Although she only completed a mediocre undergraduate degree, being able to leave the mountains was a huge leap that changed her destiny.
After graduation, it was Miss Zhuang who found her a job and recommended her to the Beijing office of her best friend's company.
At this point, Grandma Qin didn't forget to remind the two young people: "This good friend is your Grandma Yu's daughter, your Aunt Zhixia."
Ding Meiyu was quite capable; she worked her way up from a regular receptionist to a clerk, and then to the secretary's office.
However, the good times didn't last long. The Yu family moved all their business overseas, and this last office was also closed down.
Ding Meiyu lost her job and was in a bad mood.
Ms. Zhuang kindly invited her to stay at her home, comforting her while also trying to arrange for her to work at her family's company.
Unexpectedly, within just a few days, Ding Meiyu and Miss Zhuang's husband, Lin Rongsen, had slept together.
Miss Zhuang was initially kept in the dark, but a little over a month later, Ding Meiyu became pregnant.
Because Lin Rongsen had no children, he insisted on divorcing Miss Zhuang and marrying Ding Meiyu, which caused the whole thing to escalate.
This incident caused a huge uproar at the time, and Ms. Zhuang, unable to bear the double betrayal of her husband and best friend, jumped off a building.
Grandma Qin said with emotion, "That Miss Zhuang was a strong woman, very capable. She didn't seem like the type to do something so drastic. I don't know why she jumped off the building."
The Zhuang family had a son late in life, but this was their only daughter.
Although they didn't believe their daughter could commit suicide, the elderly couple were too old to cause any more trouble, so they could only return to their hometown in the south to retire, their property mostly taken by Lin Rongsen.
Lin Rongsen lacked business acumen and was only so-so at doing business. Without Zhuang Zinan, his business was not as good as before, but since he still had a foundation, his situation was still acceptable.
We had lunch at the Qin family's house because Grandpa Qin and his old comrade-in-arms had gone to a sanatorium for a vacation, so it was just the three of them eating.
Grandma Qin asked the kitchen to prepare a table full of dishes that Gu Jiangyin liked.
During the meal, Grandma Qin and Gu Jiangyin chatted the most. Qin Heming rarely spoke, spending most of his time busy on his phone.
After lunch, Qin Heming went upstairs to catch up on sleep and adjust to the time difference.
Gu Jiangyin stared intently at his figure disappearing around the corner of the stairs until his footsteps were no longer audible. Only then did she turn back, lower her eyes, and her long eyelashes trembled almost imperceptibly...
